What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
HutchFan replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
This is also my favorite M8 -- by a considerable margin. It's so much more subtle than other versions. You can hear continuity with the transparent textures that reappear in Das Lied von der Erde. I never heard the connection between these works so clearly until I heard Ozawa's recording. NP: Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4, etc. / Ormandy, Philadelphia O (Sony) IMO, the plush, luxuriant sound that Ormandy favors is a perfect match for this music. -

What about the Swingle Swingers' records with jazz musicians? I'm thinking of their collaboration with the MJQ on Place Vendôme. The Swingle Singers also collaborated with Stan Getz & Michel Legrand on Communication '72 -- even though they weren't credited. I think both of these records are interesting in a "not your ordinary jazz" sort of way -- especially the Getz record. -
I think Ellington's music was fascinating from beginning to end. So I could easily recommend ALL of these; every single one has something to recommend it. That said, the recordings in bold are particularly special to this listener. *************************** The Great Paris Concert (Atlantic) New Orleans Suite (Atlantic) Recollections of the Big Band Era (Atlantic) The Private Collection, Vol. 3: Studio Sessions, NY, 1962 (Atlantic/Saja) The Private Collection, Vol. 4: Studio Sessions, NY, 1963 (Atlantic/Saja) The Private Collection, Vol. 5: The Suites, NY, 1968 & 1970 (Atlantic/Saja) The Private Collection, Vol. 7: Studio Sessions, 1957 & 1962 (Atlantic/Saja) The Private Collection, Vol. 8: Studio Sessions, San Francisco, Chicago, NY, 1957, 1965, 1966, & 1967 (Atlantic/Saja) The Private Collection, Vol. 9: Studio Sessions, NY, 1968 (Atlantic/Saja) The Private Collection, Vol. 10: Studio Sessions, New York & Chicago, 1965, 1966 & 1971 (Atlantic/Saja) The Feeling of Jazz (Black Lion) First Time!
