  1. Coincidentally, I just finished listening to a CTI release also. This one: Now this:
  2. John Carter / Bobby Bradford - Self Determination Music (Flying Dutchman, 1970) Some of the most vital, life-affirming music that I've ever heard. . .
  3. Tremendous. ...I'm going to follow your lead and listen to that right now. On the way into work: Dizzy Gillespie & His Orchestra - A Portrait of Duke Ellington (Verve, 1960) Fischer's arrangements of Ellington's music are very un-Ellingtonian -- very dense, very buttoned-down. So I found myself having to think of this music as something different -- something "not-Ellington" -- to not get hung up on it. When I did, I started to enjoy the music more. Dizzy, of course, sounds great throughout.
  4. Moody in super-chilled mode.
  5. Excellent. Harold Vick - Don't Look Back (Strata-East) I took the leap and plopped for the Pure Pleasure reissue of this LP. It arrived in the mail today (from Dusty Groove), and I'm giving it a first spin right now.
  6. CD compiles two Prestige sessions from '67: Super Soul (with a big band arranged by Richard Evans) and Soul Power.
  7. Brother Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' (Blue Note)
  8. Rusty Bryant - Legends of Acid Jazz, Vol. 2 (Prestige) Compiles two Bryant LPs from 1971: Fire-Eater and Wildfire.
  9. More "Fathead" Newman:
  10. Quite a few of those Black & Blue CD releases are fetching high dollars in the re-sellers' market these days. . .
  11. Toots with a stellar rhythm section: Joanne Brackeen, Cecil McBee & Freddie Waits.
  12. Yeah, when it comes to the CBS recs, I prefer Manhattan Symphonie too. And I like Sophisticated Giant better also. But my favorite "post-homecoming" Dexter recordings are from the Keystone Korner: I feel like Dexter's MUCH more simpatico with this band. I love this stuff.
  13. Dexter Gordon - Homecoming: Live at the Village Vanguard (Columbia) Tonight's spin again confirms my long-held impressions about this music: The Woody Shaw / Louis Hayes group was a terrific band, but I don't think their pairing with Dexter -- at least in this instance -- comes off particularly well. Much of the time, it feels like Dexter's straining against them, rather than flying with them. The band is too stiff, too unyielding -- so Dex can never quite SOAR like he does when he's at his best. ... Just my 2 cents.
  14. Eddie Jefferson - Things Are Getting Better (Muse, 1974) with Joe Newman, Billy Mitchell, Mickey Tucker, Sam Jones, and Eddie Gladden Earlier: Kenny Burrell - Recapitulation (Chess, 2 LPs) Burrell is presented in a variety of contexts on this compilation -- and he always sounds good.
  15. I think that's one of Herbie's very best records. 5 stars all the way.
  16. Clark Terry - The Globetrotter (Vanguard) Clark must've really liked that red plaid sport-coat. It (re)appears on the cover of at least one other album. And it seems like I've seen him wearing it in other photos as well. EDIT: Maybe I've been listening to too much CT if I'm noticing these sorts of (trivial) things!
  17. You'll get no argument from me on that point. Ya Yo Me Curé is a special record.
  18. Charles Earland - Organomically Correct (Savoy) Nice compilation of late-70's Muse cuts.
