  1. Tito Puente and his Concert Orchestra (Tico/Fania, 1973)
  2. Franco D'Andrea - Nuvolao (Carosello, 1978) Claudio Fasoli / Franco D'Andrea - Jazz Duo (Dire, 1978) Enjoying both of these very much. Franco D'Andrea is an excellent pianist. Has anyone heard any of the CDs from D'Andrea's "Solo" series on Philology? I haven't -- but they look very interesting.
  3. Bobby Vince Paunetto - Paunetto's Point (Pathfinder/RSVP) with Tom Harrell, Ed Byrne, Billy Drewes, Ronnie Cuber, Andy Gonzalez, et al
  4. I'm listening to Jug too. Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor (Prestige)
  5. Wow. I've read about RVG getting angry at musicians for putting their drinks on his piano -- but I didn't realize that he was that persnickety. NP: Teddy Wilson - Striding After Fats: A Tribute to Fats Waller (Black Lion, UK vinyl) I'm no Wilson expert, but this is the best late-period TW that I've heard.
  6. Mickey Tucker Trio - Sweet Lotus Lips (Denon) with Reggie Workman & Horacee Arnold
  7. Stanley Turrentine - Jubilee Shouts (Blue Note) 2nd LP - October 1962 session with Tommy Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, Sonny Clark, Butch Warren & Al Harewood One of my favorite Turrentine sessions.
  8. Joe Diorio - Peaceful Journey (Art of Life; originally released on Spitball Records) Joe Diorio - Solo Guitar (Art of Life; originally released on Spitball Records)
  9. Dave Liebman Group - Blues All Ways (OmniTone, 2007) I prefer the later version of this band -- as on this CD -- because Vic Juris took on a more prominent role after Phil Markowitz left. Juris is an interesting guitarist, and I think he works especially well as Liebman's primary foil.
  10. Just pulled the trigger on a couple CDs by Aldo Romano's Quartet with Franco D'Andrea, Paolo Fresu, and Furio Di Castri: To Be Ornette to Be (Owl, 1983) Dreams & Waters (Owl, 1991)
  11. Franco D'Andrea - Quartet Live / My Shuffle (Red, rec. 1985) Franco D'Andrea (p); Tino Tracanna (ts, ss); Attilio Zanchi (b); Gianni Cazzola (d)
  12. Walter Norris / Aladar Pege - Winter Rose (Enja)
  13. This again: Aldo Romano - Ritual (Owl)
  14. Ryan Cohan - One Sky (Motema, 2007) Ryan Cohan (p, ldr, comp); Bob Sheppard (ts, as, fl); Geof Bradfield (ts, ss, b cl); Tito Carillo (tr, flgn); James Cammack (b); Lorin Cohen (b); Kobie Watkins (d); Jea Christophe-Leroy (perc); Ruben Alvarez (shekere)
  15. A masterpiece. NP: Mundell Lowe - Souvenirs: A Tribute to Nick Ceroli (Jazz Alliance) These recordings were originally released on Dobre as The Incomparable Mundell Lowe. The CD reissue includes four bonus tracks that were recorded at a later date. Earlier: John Coltrane - Coltrane (Prestige) Collects two LPs: Traneing In and Soultrane
  16. Someone here on the board hipped me to this. Just got it in the mail. Wonderful! THANKS! (Sorry but I don't remember exactly who it was! ) Also: Bee - yoo - tee - ful.
  17. Rodney Jones - Articulation (Timeless, 1978)
  18. No, I don't think doing what I did is the "right thing" -- and I'm all for exposing young people to diverse types of music. But I don't think it's "wrong" to give a teenager a big Weather Report box either. I just followed my nose and ended up where I am. I'm just saying that there's nothing wrong with that -- either in my case or others'.
  19. Based on your recommendation, soulpope, I was just doing a bit of reading on Yellin -- including his obit. (He died last year.) One of the sentences from the obit explains the meaning of this CD's title: "Survivors include his wife, Jane Oriel of El Cerrito, California; his daughter and son-in-law, Allegra Yellin and Jordan Ruyle, and two granddaughters . . ."
  20. IMHO, there is no "one right way" to make your way into music. When I was in high school, I constantly listened to the bands Genesis and Yes -- and hardly anything else. Not exactly a diverse musical diet! It was only when I went off to college that my musical interests began to expand into other areas -- jazz, classical, folk, bluegrass, and all the rest.
  21. Some more recommended Jimmy Herring: Back in the day, this band used to come through Athens regularly. (This album was made in the Georgia Theater in Athens.) I probably saw Colonel Bruce & the ARU perform twenty times or more -- including their most recent reunion show at the Georgia Theater in Athens, which happened few years ago. They were a fantastic band -- and Herring was an integral part of it. R.I.P. Bruce Hampton. By the way, THANK YOU for the wonderful concert review, Ed. Now I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Herring & McLaughlin in Atlanta later this month!
