  1. Both of those are terrific.
  2. I'm curious. Share some of your favorite records (albums, not songs) by living pianists that have been recorded since 2000. For simplicity's sake, let's shoot for a list of 10 CDs. (Or, if that doesn't float your boat, list however many you'd like.) To keep the focus on the pianists, let's say that all of the recordings should be solo, duo (with bass) or trio (with bass & drums). One last thought: For the purposes of this thread, I have no interest in claims of "greatest" or "best" or "most important." Honestly, I just want to know about the music that you dig, music that makes you sit up and say, "Hey, now that's something!" Stuff that's valuable to YOU. So here's my list: Richie Beirach - Impressions of Tokyo: Ancient City of the Future (Outnote) Bill Carrothers - I Love Paris (Pirouet) Marc Cary - Focus (Motéma) Orrin Evans - Flip the Script (Posi-Tone) Frank Kimbrough - Quickening (OmniTone) Enrico Pieranunzi - Live in Paris (Challenge) Martial Solal - NY-1: Live at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note) Kenny Werner - Beat Degeneration: Live, Vol. 2 (Sunnyside) Randy Weston - Zep Tepi (Random Chance) Larry Willis - This Time the Dream's on Me (HighNote) And these would make my "Honorable Mention" list: Joey Calderazzo - Haiku (Marsalis) Marc Copland - Modinha: New York Trio Recordings, Vol. 1 (Pirouet) Vijay Iyer - Historicity (ACT) Steve Kuhn - Pastorale (Sunnyside/Venus) Bill Mays - Live at Jazz Standard (Palmetto) Jason Moran - Ten (Blue Note) Luis Perdomo - Universal Mind (Now Forward) Jean-Michel Pilc - Open Minds [released under the leadership of Mads Vinding] (Storyville) Edward Simon - Latin American Songbook (Sunnyside) Bobo Stenson - Indicum (ECM) Jessica Williams - This Side Up (MaxJazz) Denny Zeitlin - Slickrock (MaxJazz) What say you?
  3. Enrico Pieranunzi - Live in Paris (Challenge, rec. 2001) with Heyn van de Geyn & André "Dédé" Ceccarelli Desert-island music.
  4. sidewinder -- I'm cueing up that Getz right now, prompted by your post. Earlier today, during my morning commute: Lucky Thompson - Lord, Lord, Am I Ever Gonna Know? (Candid, rec. 1961) with Martial Solal, Peter Trunk and Kenny Clarke
  5. Two more new-to-me CDs: Charles Davis on tenor sax here. Impressive solo piano.
  6. Nice essay. I'd never read that Monk quote (via Steve Lacy): “You’ve got to dig it to dig, you dig?” Fantastic. Love it. Happy 100th, TSM!
  7. Bol, have you looked at www.BagsUnlimited.com? I think they stock what you're looking for. See https://www.bagsunlimited.com/category/504/jewel-cases
  8. When I arrived home from work tonight, a package was waiting for me -- a big box of used CDs that I'd ordered from Discogs. Just finished: Pat Martino - The Maker (Evidence/King Japan, 1995) with Jim Ridl (p), Marc Johnson (b) and Joe Bonadio (d) Martino in a contemplative mood. Superb. Now playing: Dave Liebman Group - Voyage (Evidence) with Vic Juris (g); Phil Markowitz (p, synth); Tony Marino (b, el b); Jamey Haddad (d, perc, vo); Café (perc, vo)
  9. with Sir Roland Hanna, Ron Carter, and Louis Hayes
  10. Wow. That was a Hollywood marriage. Lasted for all of six weeks. As a Falcons fan, I wish the Saints continued futility.
  11. I hear you, BBS. That makes perfect sense.
  12. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin - Battle Stations (Prestige/OJC) with Norman Simmons (p), Victor Sproles (b), and Ben Riley (d)
  13. Sad news. Sorry to hear this. May he rest in peace.
  14. Bill Evans - The Tokyo Concert (Fantasy, 1974) with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morrell
  15. I'm not sure what "boiling over" means either -- unless you're talking about a pot on a stovetop! As for "bowling over," see definition 2 below: bowl over v. 1. To knock someone or something down to the ground: The kids ran down the hallway, bowling over everyone in theirway. A strong wind will bowl that billboard over. 2. To make a powerful impression on someone; astound someone: She bowled over everyone at the meeting with her amazing presentation. His new songs bowled me over, so I bought his new CD. You must go hear this poet—you will be bowled over!
  16. The Dave Liebman Group - Turnaround: The Music of Ornette Coleman (Jazzwerkstatt, 2010)
  17. danasgoodstuff, I pretty much agree with your assessment. I've enjoyed The Sermon, and it's interesting to hear the sacred works in a jazz context -- but it's never really bowled me over like some other HH recordings have. IIRC, The Sermon was the last recording Hawes made before he was sent to prison. With a few exceptions, I like the music Hawes made after his incarceration best.
  18. Dave Liebman - Homage to John Coltrane (Owl, 1987) On tracks 1 - 5: Dave Liebman (ss); Jim McNeely (p); Eddie Gomez (b); Adam Nussabaum (d, perc); Caris Visentin (oboe) On tracks 6 - 10: Dave Liebman (ss); Jim Beard (synth); Mark Egan (el b); Bob Moses (d, perc); Caris Visentin (oboe)
  19. Phil Woods' Little Big Band - Evolution (Concord)
  20. Michel Petrucciani - Oracle's Destiny: Big Sur, California (Owl) Solo piano from '82.
  21. Jane Ira Bloom - Meets Jackson Pollack: Chasing Paint (Arabesque) with Fred Hersch, Mark Dresser, and Bobby Previte Great! Al Harewood is on fire.
