  1. First spin of this new-to-me LP: Bobby Hackett with Zoot Sims, Bucky Pizzarelli, Hank Jones, Richard Davis & Mel Lewis - Strike Up the Band (Flying Dutchman) Zoot always sounds good. That feeling of anticipation is often so delicious.
  2. Listening to Lucky Thompson tonight.
  3. Two VERY different views of LvB's Sixth, both favorites:
  4. More CT records: Clark Terry's Big B-A-D Band - Live! At Buddy's Place (Vanguard) Clark Terry Quartet featuring Red Mitchell - Funk Dumplin's (Matrix)
  5. Bobo Stenson - Anders Jormin - Jon Christensen - Reflections (ECM, 1996) A superb trio.
  6. I've been listening to Woody Shaw also -- in this instance, as a sideman with the Louis Hayes/Junior Cook Quintet: Ichi-Ban (Timeless, rec. 1976)
  7. Erroll Garner, people! Erroll Garner!!! . . . Hell yeah.
  8. Jimmy Knepper Sextet - Tell Me . . . (Daybreak, 1979) with Eddie Engels (tr, fln); Dick Vennik (ts); Nico Bunink (p); Harry Emmery (b); John Engels (d)
  9. NP: Nat Adderley Septet - Don't Look Back (SteepleChase, 1976) with Onaje Allan Gumbs, John Stubblefield, Ken McIntyre, a.o.
  10. I agree on both counts. It seems like it wouldn't work. But it comes off wonderfully. In fact, it seems like there's a tangible simpatico vibe between Brubeck & Rushing. Go figure.
  11. Wild Bill Davis - All Right, OK, You Win (Black & Blue) with Lockjaw Davis
  12. Continuing my evening of CT music with: Clark After Dark: The Ballad Artistry of Clark Terry (MPS) It's fun to hear Terry do his thing over these enormous, swoony arrangements. Most of them are by Peter Herbolzheimer, who also conducts the orchestra.
  13. More CT: Clark Terry - Wham: Live at Jazzhouse Hamburg (MPS)
  14. Clark Terry - The Globetrotter (Vanguard, 1977)
  15. Richie Beirach & Frank Tusa - Sunday Song (Trio, 1975) Beautiful.
