  1. Mosaic Select 12: David Liebman & Richie Beirach Disc 3 - Quest [Liebman, Beirach, Ron McClure & Billy Hart] Scorching.
  2. Coleman Hawkins - The Hawk Flies (Milestone 2-fer) LP 1 - These cuts were originally released as 78 RPM singles. They include Monk's very first recordings. EDIT: And now LP 2 - This was originally released as The Hawk Flies High.
  3. David Friesen Trio - Midnight Mood: Live in Stockholm (Intuition) with pianist Randy Porter and drummer Alan Jones
  4. Love the Chico O'Farrill arrangements.
  5. I got this LP in London when I was studying in the U.K. many years ago.
  6. Bags Meets Wes! (Riverside) as heard on this 1970s Milestone reissue:
  7. Sippin' on this while I listen to Louis & Duke.
  8. Oh yeah. Chuck, that Marantz unit looks NICE. My receiver is a Marantz too, but much more recent vintage. It's only about 15 years old.
  9. I've heard a bit of Brendel's Liszt before (on a Philips LP), and his approach struck me as too measured and sober. (Brendel's critics would say that's always the case. Not me though. I love Brendel's Beethoven and his Haydn. I just thought Liszt was a mismatch for Brendel, temperament-wise.) Then I heard the music on this Vanguard CD. It's very different from what I remember of the Philips LP; it's much more quicksilver-y and impetuous. Now that's what I'm talking about.
  10. Dig Shelly Manne. He's all over the kit, continually adding accents and punctuation -- but his playing is so musical that it's never obtrusive or showy. It's all woven into the musical fabric.
  11. Hans Koller, Attila Zoller, Roland Hanna - Trinity (L+R)
  12. erwbol, you hit the jackpot with all those Jaki Byard finds. More Byard for me too. Jaki Byard - Parisian Solos (Futura)
  13. Jaki Byard - Family Man (32 Jazz; originally Muse) Tonight, this record hit me square between the eyes. I enjoyed it so much that when I got to the end, I listened to the whole thing a second time. Herbie Nichols - Love, Gloom, Cash, Love (Bethlehem) I still haven't ever found my way into Nichol's music. It's enjoyable enough, but I still haven't heard the special magic that others find in it. . . . Who knows? Maybe Nichols just isn't my cuppa joe.
  14. More Tootie Heath on another new-to-me disc: Art Farmer, et al - Central Avenue Reunion (Contemporary, 1989)
  15. I really like that LP. Need to pull it out and give it a listen.
  16. Brilliant!!! On Sunday, I picked up this new-to-me CD: Initial impressions after just two listens: This is FANTASTIC. Some of the most interesting playing that I've heard from Iverson. Tootie and Ben Street sound great too. If you've ever wanted to hear Iverson in a "non-Bad Plus" trio context, I'd recommend beginning here. Now, I suppose I need to track down the two studio records they've made. Anyone who's heard them have any thoughts?
