  1. Chick Corea & Return to Forever - Light as a Feather (Polydor) I love this version of RTF with Joe Farrell, Flora & Airto. IMHO, the subsequent groups weren't nearly as interesting.
  2. James P. Johnson - Giants of Jazz (Time Life) So much vitality in this music.
  3. Joe Bonner Trio - Parade (SteepleChase)
  4. Same here. Now playing: Arthur Blythe - Bush Baby (Adelphi)
  5. Didier Lockwood - Out of the Blue (Gramavision) with Gordon Beck, Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart. Excellent!
  6. Jack Walrath - Holy Trinity (Muse) with Jimmy Madison & Chip Jackson
  7. Spinning some solo piano records this afternoon: John Coates, Jr. - In the Open Space (Omnisound) Al Haig - Piano Interpretation (Seabreeze) Of Lloyd's recordings for Atlantic, that's the one that I return to most frequently.
  8. THE COMPLETE 1932-1940 BRUNSWICK, COLUMBIA AND MASTER RECORDINGS OF DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS FAMOUS ORCHESTRA Discs 2 & 3
  9. THE COMPLETE 1932-1940 BRUNSWICK, COLUMBIA AND MASTER RECORDINGS OF DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS FAMOUS ORCHESTRA Disc 1
  10. James Moody & Al Cohn - Too Heavy for Words (PAUSA / MPS) with Barry Harris, Sam Jones & Roy Brooks
  11. Has anyone heard this LP? Synthesis - Six by Six (Chiaroscuro, recorded 1977) Synthesis was co-led by bassist Ken Hutson and drummer Rahsaan (aka Ron Rahsaan). The sidemen include Arthur Blythe and Olu Dara. Look intriguing. I've never heard this music. If you have, I'd be interested to know what you think.
  12. This just arrived in the mail -- along with several other LPs. Bill Hardman - Home (Muse) Mickey Tucker was one helluva pianist. I'm just sayin'... Forced to pick just one Dylan record for my desert island, I'd probably choose John Wesley Harding. To this listener, Dylan never wrote a better song than "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine." Powerful, powerful music.
  13. David Friedman - Futures Passed (Enja) David Friedman & David Samuels - Double Image (Enja)
  14. Kamuca sure does make a beautiful sound on the tenor. Now I'm spinning another Kamuca LP from around the same time: Richie Kamuca Quartet - Richie (Concord) Another special record. EDIT: Just now listening to Kamuca's playing on "Some Other Spring" . . . Phew. Amazing.
  15. Richie Kamuca - Drop Me Off in Harlem (Concord)
  16. Von Freeman - Serenade & Blues (Nessa)
  17. Here are a few of my Duvivier favorites. All of these happen to be from the 1970s: - Gene Ammons - Night Lights (Prestige) - Ray Bryant - Here's Ray Bryant (Pablo) - Buddy DeFranco - Like Someone in Love (Progressive) - Lockjaw Davis - The Heavy Hitter (Muse) - Hank Jones - Bluesette (Black & Blue) - Joe Newman - I Love My Woman (Black & Blue)
  18. Now spinning this vinyl: Earl Hines - A Monday Date: 1928 (Milestone) On the way home from work: Stephane Grappelli & Martial Solal - Happy Reunion (Owl) Two of my all-time favorite pianists.
  19. John Stetch - Ukrainianism (Justin Time)
  20. Brahms: Piano works / Peter Rösel (Edel Classics) Disc 3: Piano Sonata No. 3; Variations on a Theme by Schumann; Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 119 Perfectly balanced Brahms. In this repertoire, I think Rösel is unsurpassed.
  21. McCoy Tyner - Extensions (National Geographic... Ooops. Blue Note )
  22. James P. Johnson - Giants of Jazz (Time Life) A few years ago, I digitized the music in this 3-LP set so I could listen at work & in the car. I'd love to upgrade to the Mosaic set at some point. Terrific!
  23. More Texier: Henri Texier - Varech (Disques JMS) Through over-dubbing, Texier plays ALL of the instruments on this LP: double bass, electric bass, oud, flute, bombarde, and percussion. This music very much anticipates Texier's later, "world music"-influenced recordings for Label Bleu.
