  1. Earland was (primarily) a Hammond B3 organist -- comparable to other post-Jimmy Smith players like Groove Holmes, Lonnie Smith, Jack McDuff, et al. Earland had a big hit -- and crossover success -- in 1970 with his album Black Talk!
  2. Continuing my recent Charles Earland kick with one of his best: Oh yeah!
  3. Now streaming: Sonora Ponceña - Sabor Sureño (Inca, 1974) I just learned that Craft is reissuing this title. I will definitely be picking it up.
  4. Brahms Fourth Symphony performed by Eugen Jochum & the LPO, as heard in this set: Earlier: Brahms Violin Sonatas performed by Rubinstein & Szeryng
  5. Extraordinary -- on every level.
  6. Great music! I wish I had a copy of that LP. 😜
  7. Tony Williams - Angel Street (Blue Note, 1988)
  8. I don't have that massive Art Pepper box, but -- over the years -- I've collected most of his Galaxy stuff on individual CDs and/or LPs.
  9. Randomly pulled from the shelf: Various Artists - Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia Of Jazz - Jazz of the '60's, Vol. #1: Giants of the Saxophones (Vee Jay, 1964) This fun sampler is a dollar bin find that I ran across a few years ago.
  10. Next up: James Moody - Heritage Hum (Perception, 1971) Lovely & soulful. Moody in a lyrical groove. Lots of flute. The overall vibe is different -- but I'd rate this LP right up there with Never Again! In other words: This is more Top Shelf stuff.
  11. I don't know anything about the author, and I haven't ever seen this book. But I LOVE the idea of it. There are many rooms in the Jazz House. It seems like this author is willing to explore some rooms that have been overlooked -- by critics, at least, if not by listeners. I'd like to see a table contents to have a bit more insight into which artists the author discusses. EDIT Here's a review from The Syncopated Times that covers some of the musicians that the author explores in the book: https://syncopatedtimes.com/in-with-the-in-crowd-popular-jazz-in-1960s-black-america/
  12. Now spinning: Art Pepper - Artworks (Galaxy, 1984) This album consists of outtakes from the 1979 sessions that yielded So in Love on the Artists House label. This LP features the West Coast ensemble: George Cables, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins. Coming up next: More outtakes from the same So in Love sessions, but this time with the NY-based ensemble: Hank Jones, Ron Carter, and Al Foster.
  13. Marshall Gilkes, WDR Big Band – Köln (Alternate Side Records, 2015)
  14. NP: I know Shearing's three MPS LPs with NHØP & Louis Stewart . . . and his solo LP, My Ship. But I had no idea that The Way We Are existed. Will give it a listen.
  15. Not a song that I would've EVER associated with George Shearing! Yet. . . there it is.
  16. After recommendations from @Teasing the Korean and @JSngry:
