  1. I'm continuing my Brahms run with Arthur Rubinstein and Gregor Piatigorsky performing the Cello Sonatas, as heard in this set: As good as it gets.
  2. Now I'm listening to István Kertész conduct the VPO in Brahms' First Symphony:
  3. Seems like Konitz recorded in a duo setting with about a million pianists. But none of them surpass Konitz's work with Solal, IMO. Along with Duplicity, I'm especially partial to this one: One of Herbie's finest hours, I think. (Among many others.) Oh, HAIL yes.
  4. Schumann's Fourth Symphony, as heard in this Jean Martinon set:
  5. Now spinning: I'm listening to the first LP in this Groove Merchant two-fer, which was originally released as Goodbye Yesterday!
  6. Next up: João Donato, Arranged & Conducted by Deodato (Muse, 1973) Personnel: João Donato (kybds); Deodato (kybds, arr, cond); Romeo Penque (fl, whistle); Mauricio Einhorn (harmonica); Randy Brecker (tr); Michael Gibson (tb); Bob Rose (g); Dud Bascomb (b); Allan Schwartzberg (d); Ray Barretto (cga); Airto (perc) I have the 32 Jazz reissue with a different cover -- but I like the Muse cover better.
  7. R.I.P.
  8. Two by Lou Donaldson: and
  9. Gheorghe, you can see the definition of "Acid Jazz" here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_jazz The "Legends of Acid Jazz" series repackaged soul-jazz and jazz-funk music originally recorded in the late-60s and early-70s for Prestige. Typically, CDs in the series contain 2 complete LPs. Whatever you might want to call it, the music is fabulous -- if you enjoy those jazz sub-genres.
  10. More Brahms + Gilels: Another desert-island selection. ❤️
  11. A desert-island disc. ❤️
  12. Yep. For the most part, musical scarcity -- like it used to exist -- is a thing of the past. During my college days, when I was first exploring jazz, I could only imagine what music that I read about in magazines & books (from the library!) sounded like. I was limited both by my budget and by the availability of the music. Now, most things are just a few clicks away. Even the rare stuff. Of course, the all-you-can-eat buffet of streaming presents a new & different set of difficulties. As ever, things ain't what they used to be.
  13. Juju - Chapter Two: Nia (Strata-East, 1974)
  14. Next up: I love that record.
  15. Now spinning: Bobby Watson's debut as a leader.
  16. Now playing: Jean-Michel Pilc, François Moutin, Ari Hoenig - Threedom (Motema, 2011)
