Which jazz big band/orchestra recordings since 2000 would you recommend?
Any style: Retro to Avant. Even "jazz-adjacent" is fine. Big tent.
Any number of recordings: One or five or whatever number you feel led to share.
Not necessarily the best or most important. Just music that has brought you some measure of enjoyment.
I'm all ears.
Continuing my RUSH kick with . . .
Rush - Counterparts (Atlantic/Anthem, 1993)
It's by Canadian graphic artist Hugh Syme. He designed Rush's covers from the mid-70s onwards.
I like how the simple, red exterior contrasts with the minutely detailed inner gatefold image -- with the three spheres providing continuity across both:
Freddie Hubbard – trumpet
Hadley Caliman – tenor saxophone, flute
Phil Ranelin – trombone
Billy Childs – keyboards, piano
Larry Klein – bass
Carl Burnett – drums
Paulinho da Costa – percussion
