  1. Welcome to the board, Ethan. In truth, I don't see the Grant Green as essential. It is actually one of his weaker sessions. I would go for the Mclean and the Byrd and the Duke Pearson. I own the JRVG version of "Goin (Out?) West," and I'm keeping it, but it's just that his other stuff would be more important to get if money is limited.
  2. Great idea, Dan. I'm in!
  3. Welcome to the board, Tim, and mingle with the crowd.
  4. Available at Walmart? The GROPE is on a mission to go where he hasn't gone before: to move beyond plaid! Remember: "It's a small step for GROPE; a giant step for mankind!"
  5. CAREFUL WARNING! This is the kind of lingo that gets DEEP all randy. Keep your speech pure as the driven Manitoba snow, Patty.
  6. Saki (HH Munro) came from a Colonial background. I think he was born in Burma. He was brought up by aunts and experienced firsthand the triviality of the type of people Maugham wrote about. Perhaps you will find their characterizations similar, though Saki was not homosexual as Maugham was; again, I suspect they simply wrote-as-they-saw-them as opposed to looking at the world through a gay perspective.
  7. Start off with Saki's short story, "Tobermory." Should be able to find it in any library (even in the Northwest Territories ) The main character is a cat who can talk. He overhears certain conversations and such and has the chutzpah to regurgitate them at inappropriate moments. Every word is a superbly-cut facet making a wonderful gem of a story. You won't regret it...
  8. Matchmaking is one thing, Patty; doing my utmost to prevent you from falling into the soiled and twisted clutches of DEEP is another. Don't be fooled by GROPE's plaid shirts and all his talk of sexual quiescence. I bet he's a real tiger! And don't think I don't appreciate it. However, I could never be with an ugly plaid-shirted, baseball-capped man who has no style, no matter what tiger-like, boudoirian prowess he may possess. I regret my shallowness, but there it is. Now you've done it, GROPE. You've not only managed to piss off all the board lefties with your political comments, but now you've comprehensively alienated Patty as well. Regarding those plaid shirts of yours: take a trip to Walmart and UPGRADE!
  9. BTW, Patty, I am much more familiar with Maugham than I am with Williams. Maugham showed particular talent in characterizing snooty Colonial women. Damn, he was good at it. I don't think that his women were representative of all women, just those of a certain class and mindset. Saki was also talented at describing females of the same class. Very funny and dry.
  10. I guess I missed the reference there as well. Forgive GROPE. He knows not what he does. (I can't even figure out what he did!)
  11. I can assure you that the audience had no trouble hearing Joe. In fact, until you moved your organ speaker, we could barely here you, but things were well balanced at the end. I noticed Joe had a real fan by the side of the wall. His head was bobbing up and down and he apparently plays guitar. He can tell a real pro! BTW, I did find those track listings. Thanks! You know, it isn't a bad session at all. Not as good as "Got a Good Thing Goin" but not bad. Not all the songs are the same.
  12. Matchmaking is one thing, Patty; doing my utmost to prevent you from falling into the soiled and twisted clutches of DEEP is another. Don't be fooled by GROPE's plaid shirts and all his talk of sexual quiescence. I bet he's a real tiger!
  13. Referring to...? Did I do....? Must have missed something.
  14. "I used to smoke marijuana. But I'll tell you something: I would only smoke it in the late evening. Oh, occasionally the early evening, but usually the late evening - or the mid-evening. Just the early evening, midevening and late evening. Occasionally, early afternoon, early midafternoon, or perhaps the late-midafternoon. Oh, sometimes the early-mid-late-early morning. . . . But never at dusk."--Steve Martin Yes, I know that there will be some doubters and deniers. Scoff all you want Ghostie, I know when I've stopped the leak in my ship. Instead of spending $40-50/week, I am now spending less than that per month. Eventually, the circulation in my pocketbook will be completely cut off.
  15. So you feel that there's a similarity in the way these authors portray women and it's likely because they were homosexual? Hmm, interesting theory. Maybe they were very accurate observors as are many authors. I guess I just never considered that angle before, Patty. BTW, if I could offer some friendly advice: Choose GROPE! B)
  16. I'm not checking out any other boards. Happy here, thank you! Certainly don't want anything to do with anything Blue Note establishes. It wouldn't be fun anymore. I think there would be some heavy monitoring. Why else would they have shut down the board?
  17. I forgot: does cduniverse charge shipping? I've still got to listen to my "Reddie For Freddie" Conn version. If it sounds fine, I'm not upgrading.
  18. I will buy some of the new RVGs in March and will pick up new titles from Blue Note (Conns and such.) I also make a few purchases and trades from other boardmembers, but aside from that, I'm done! I feel I'm overcoming my addiction.
  19. Sorry! This post went into the wrong forum. Should be under "Organissimo Band Discussion." Jim: HELP!!
  20. Just wanted to thank the band once more for a great evening. I got the chance to meet GregK from our board and we visited the Firefly for the first time. Was a little nervous about all the pictures of Blues artists on the wall and the crowd seemed to initially respond more towards the blues tracks. I wanted to hear JAZZ! Second and third sets we got it full blast. Randy: just wanted to remind you that you were inspired during those two sets. You are definitely no lazy drummer. Jim met an organist colleague in the audience so he was obligated to BURN! Joe was his usual solid self. Really loved the two Don Patterson tunes. Like your new song, "Smokin Section," along with the tunes from "Boogaloo Sisters." GregK is a really nice person. Look forward to the next time you're in town. WNMC take note!
  21. Ya, right....first thing you do when you get up in the morning is check ebay for those elusive jazz titles! Well, maybe not the first thing but surely right after your cup of tea and the visit to the throne to read the paper! No more, Knife. I'm a reformed man. B) Haven't bought a thing on ebay all year, though I did hit half.com a couple of times. I've also sold a couple things on half. Been living up to my New Year's resolution regarding a cessation in cd purchases. Got good will power.
  22. Bobby Hutcherson all the way! I don't think he put in a bad session anywhere aside from a brief period in the 70s. He is always dedicated; love his lightning speed and his superior feel for the avant-garde. He made a wonderful team with Herbie Hancock. He played a role in many of Blue Note's greatest cds. I can't name them all right now, but he was in Jackie's "Destination Out!" and Grant Green's "Idle Moments." His stuff as a leader is outstanding; my favorite might be "Happenings." I just love his version of "Maiden Voyage." Milt was the first vibist for me; I heard him when I was a kid, but Hutcherson took it to another level. I do like Roy Ayers and Tjader is fine with me. Walt Dickerson's "To My Queen" is a masterpiece.
  23. Hey GROPE: Not only do we get the Canadian political view of the world, now we're getting the finest poets from the Yukon.
  24. Thanks for the headsup, but I'm too lazy to look at ebay.
  25. Very true. The culture has to be elevated; the attitudes need to be elevated; the expectations need to be elevated.
