Why can't Booby Knight just go away????
connoisseur series500 replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Maybe, but my point is that there are a lot of Division 1 small schools with outstanding coaches just waiting for an opportunity at a bigger school. Not even dealing with the ethics of hiring good but obnoxious coaches, there are enough good ones out there with controlable tempers. In the end, there is no reason--moral or immoral--to keep or hire Bobby Knight as your basketball coach. -

Good point, Clay.... -
Maybe next year they can have a tribute to Johhny Cash and somebody can REALLY shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die... Okay, I didn't quite phrase my point right. It's okay to choreograph trashy and suggestive song lyrics, but it's not okay to show a tit. How's that? Oh, I forgot... And I shall now add a....

I listened to a couple people telling me about how outraged they were by the halftime show and the now famous "tit episode." They said their young kids were viewing the program and they didn't appreciate having to see what they did. I've been thinking about it for some time now, and I've come to the conclusion that I don't care about what happened. All of her clothes could have been ripped off as far as I'm concerned, and it wouldn't matter a bit to me. I couldn't care less if my 11 year old son happened to see a nude woman on TV. Who cares? I am more offended by watching fake and disgusting tongue-wrapping kisses in moves along with a dialogue of sex innuendoes and the like. Actually, I wouldn't care that much if my kid saw that as well; but that is still more offensive than actual nudity. As it stands, I didn't see the halftime show because I don't care for the type of music that was advertised: Kid Rock, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Aerosmith, you name it. I'm not going to sit through that garbage anyway. Why are we still so puritanical as a nation? The brothers and sisters on black television seem a lot more liberated on these issues than we are. Am I missing something? What do you all think about it?

Bobby Knight should be made permanently unemployed as far as basketball is concerned. There are a lot of talented basketball coaches in the smaller Division 1 schools who are ready to move up to the bigger programs. There is no reason for any school to feel they have to hire a Bobby Knight. It's ridiculous. -

It is sad that young black males are perceived in this way. It is definitely a deserved perception in some cases, but we should of course judge everone as individuals. If I were a black male, I would do my best to prove such a prejudice as incorrect. I certainly wouldn't try to fulfill it. I would also be very frustrated and angry that the perception exists though it didn't fit me personally. It is very annoying but we have to deal with it. -

Oh. My. God. This really shouldn't surprise us as much as it does. One of my clients taught for years in an all-black inner city school. She was one of the only white teachers. Most of the Administration was also black. She said that the educational standards were appalling and she was called down to her superiors whenever she gave a student an "F." She would complain that she can't pass some students when they can't even read. I asked her whether pouring more money into the school system would help. She replied that it wouldn't do a bloody bit of good. In fact, her school had similar things to the other schools. If new books were given out, they would be in tatters within a month. Everything was treated badly. So why is it all like this? It's how they're not brought up at home, she said. Their parent(s) act like they don't care about education. In the end, she had to get out and qualified for disability owing to depression. I cannot get her to say anything good about her former school. I'm not saying that this woman's testimony should necessarily outweigh that of anyone elses; but it is an informed opinion. Take it as you will. -
That cognoman, DEEP...have you started an untimely wet season? (btw, welcome back.)

I'm back on again. Didn't realize how much I would miss this board for a day. I had all kinds of stuff to say yesterday (mostly about the Patriots!), so everyone is lucky! I forgot it all today. In the meantime, Jim Sangrey, I can imagine you posting to yourself all day long yesterday...how wuz that like?? -

Thanks for your sane words, Tom (and B-3er.) I've never been in the situation so I can only imagine what it must be like. I also echo a couple of thoughts made by other posters: consider us a support group for sure and thanks for having the courage and confidence for sharing your feelings, Tom. -

Report from a couple mornings after: Still feels great, guys! Read an article by Len Pasquarelli, who points out that most of the NE players will be around next year along with a fistful of draft picks and three high quality injured players. They're gonna be in the running again, folks. Repeating is sooo hard. It's that hunger thing. One thing's for sure: I think Carolina has a good shot of returning to the Super Bowl. NE? Hard to say. It's that hunger thing. They'll definitely have better players, but that's not enough. Impossible to say. Will have to see if the hunger is there during the early games next year. In the meantime, I look forward to the college draft then football is really over. Enjoy baseball everyone! I'm taking a break from sports till next football season.
