  1. Aarrr! Ahoy there maties!! Be slurping me fine grog here and listening to this wonderful music called jazz. Never heard anyting finer; not even a whale's singing or a fine breeze gracing me sails. Know which country I just come back from? The Ahhrrrrgentine!
  2. huh? Start with classic Blue Note issues. Start with RVG series or Connoisseur Series or Rare Groove issues. Usually can't go wrong there.
  3. Like JK, I'm a fan of these mini-lps. Haven't yet devised a way of protecting the cds as they come sliding out when I pick them up; but I just love the look of them. I just feel that the Japanese are always ahead of us when it comes to marketing or providing the consumer with superior merchandise included packaging. I have around 7-10 of them. Too lazy to go upstairs and count. Wish I had more, but they are expensive.
  4. That's why you should listen to jazz in the car: no vocals. Bees can't find their way into people's mouths while they're humming.
  5. I gotta feeling Cleveland might beat San Francisco this weekend. It's the old story in the NFL: the team that needs the win the most tends to win. My team, the Patriots play the Jets. I think we should beat them. We've still got some issues to deal with: linebacker injuries, the fallout over Lawyer Milloy's departure and whatever resentment remains for Belichek after that release. It's a long season and there's time for all teams to solve certain problems. Right now the Bills and the Chiefs are looking real tough.
  6. Can't compare them, Dan. Marlow barely wrote anything; what was it Dr. Faustus? along with something else. Shakespeare was a marvel and we should have a thread on him.
  7. Great article, RC, and thanks Jim for suggesting it. Do you guys know the unreleased BN sessions Hank was talking about in the article? Just curious.
  8. Seriously David: you've probably got more generous ears than Steve and I have. You might find something of value there. I like Ike Quebec and Grant Green, but we don't hear much of either; or at least, neither of them stretch out at all. It's a sad commentary that Steve has to break up his complete Conn collection simply because he cannot stand Dodo. This, by the way, from a guy who bought them in bulk from a local store and palmed one off on me! I know that Mark Sheldon also has a complete Conn collection. Apparently, he was willing to put up with Dodo, which was one of his last acquisitions. Why so hard to find this disc? People must be clinging to them.
  9. Nah, it's more like passing the old maid.
  10. No, Couw, I haven't heard it. I was just reacting to the written comments from both parties.
  11. You haven't heard it yet.
  12. Sure hope you guys will be alright. I was born in Jamaica and lived there for the first eight years of my life. We were hit by hurricanes from time to time. Now I'm inland Ohio. Unless these hurricanes move into the Great Lakes we're fine over here. Nothing greater than tornadoes to worry about. Hope you guys make it through without any damage.
  13. Well just mark it up as another one I shouldn't have dumped. It wouldn't be the first time.

  15. Hey JK, Hang on to that for a little bit. I might be able to come up with some trade material. Paul
  16. Christ Rooster, What a thread stopper! No more funny handles?
  17. How come I'm the only one fessing up to dumping certain Conns? Yeah, I just got sick of the songs awful quickly. They were short and seemed to lack meat. And that alto sounded screetchy after awhile.
  18. Obviously, you've given them more closer listenings than I have. Yeah, the Dog Years version is more intense. Still, unless one is a total Roland Kirk nut or completist, I just don't see any reason to get all his 70s live stuff.
  19. Not sure, Guy. Check out half.com. I'm still listening to it. Great session. Walton has his big moments as well. Wonderful music.
  20. I don't think so. They both make good and bad points. Kirk has no reason to call the critic prejudiced. None of that came through on his review. The review may have been too harsh; I can understand Kirk getting upset about it. Artists are not known for their honesty regarding their personal lives. Not sure who to believe here. Both come out of this episode looking bad to me.
  21. And as for you, Couw: Have you ever considered switching to the correct English spelling of "cow?" Most of us on this board can't read Flemish, you know...
  22. Never too late to start!! I'm always collecting doubles for trading purposes. Don't have any extras at the moment, but I'm sure I can keep an eye out for you.
  23. Yes, that's what I mean. But just count them as Conns. Easier said than done. If somebody can post a link to the complete list (or paste in the list itself), I might be able to tackle the question.... Don't know the technology of how to do it, but Couw posted a complete list on April 22 under the "discography" section.
  24. Virtually the same version can be found on "I, aye, eye," (if my memory is correct) and on "Volunteered Slavery."
