  1. I haven't heard the Select (yet), but on Lift Every Voice I've actually been struck by how close Garnett sounds to Wayne Shorter. I haven't made the Gilmore connection yet, but that's not saying it won't happen! I also think that Bennie Maupin, again on Lift Every Voice, sounds a lot like Joe Henderson.
  2. My sentiments, too. I'm anticipating this set with more eagerness than I anticipated the release of Passing Ships. In fact, the day it shows up in the mail, I may just have to ban myself from the board into listening exile ...

    Warne Marsh

Moe & The Poets currently have this one in stock for $26.99 — on sale. Marsh unaccompanied from 1987. I didn't even know this existed until today. Anyone here heard it?
  4. Just got done listening to the VICJ of Coltrane's Settin' the Pace (courtesy of Hiroshi Tanno), and am very impressed. This one does seem a little louder than most VICJs (compression?), but the soundstage appears very natural, and Chambers' bass is exquisitely miked — full, but never booming. This session has always been one of my favorite Coltranes on Prestige, and it will now be receiving even more airplay! Right up there, soundwise, with the VICJs of Cookin' and Way Out West.
  5. (Trying to suck up drool.)
  6. No kidding. This is the kind of stuff that I pray some billionaire jazzophile (an oxymoron?) feels compelled to get out to the masses in a legitimate package before he/she dies (buried, of course, with Buddy Bolden's mouthpiece and lucky coffee mug).

    Teddy Edwards

Heard back from Cuscuna on this one. Here's my initial e-mail: And Cuscuna's response this morning: So there's at least hope! What kind of "special encounters" McCann Select would work here? • It's About Time (McCann-Edwards) • That's Where It's At (McCann-Turrentine) • In New York (McCann-et al.) Anything else? Or substitutions thereof?
  8. Thanks David and JG. Rainey goes onto "the list." I'm all for that approach to playing (which perhaps Lacy and Parker pioneered?). Frank — count me in as a Wilber fan. What I especially like about his playing is that his use of tremolo (I won't even say vibrato) is often more controlled than Bechet's. I wonder what kind of mouthpiece Bechet used ...

    Funny Rat

Yes, I do very much think so.
  10. Yes. Well put, and perhaps the reason why I think this movie is a small triumph of sorts.
  11. From that site: Fully. I was a Duck. But first I was a Mean Green Eagle. Lastly, I was an Anteater. (But I was never a Banana Slug.)
  12. Actually, that's just what you were told. The real reason is the Pepper Estate just found out that the Select will include the previously unreleased track "Mogadishu Blues." Because of the politically sensitive nature of this track's title, the whole box has been yanked from distribution for an indefinite period of time. Those who received their set before this advisory have been asked to return it to Mosaic, or to sell it for astronomically high prices on e-Bay.

Yes, but the blue shapes against the black background are offensive. I'd rather see them be modified into dolphins (maintaining the Miami connection).
  14. Anyone else spit up their drink watching this show? "Mom, get off the phone! I'm ordering a pizza!"

Honestly, I had no interest in this album until I saw Jeff's cover!!! YOW!!! Yes, and "W.M.D." takes on a whole new meaning ...
  17. That's a good one. I'm glad that Sue Mingus has reissued that concert, along with the UCLA concert. GOSH!
  18. Heckyeah it was; whattya think? GOSH!!! Oh, OK. (You shoulda said "You Idiot!" ) Maybe Blue Note could retitle the tunes from Basra with phrases from this movie. GOSH!
  19. Hey, you went to Linfield? Beautiful campus. A fine school, too, from what I've read.

Agreed. I didn't even realize that Saddam was on the cover of that one ...

I didn't mind your cover. (And, in a way, any thread involving RVG is going to be political.) Actually, I'm kind of finding some (albeit sad) humor in all this. If it's Pete Sims' call to change the title — so be it. He's the artist. Is it censorship? I don't know. If it truly is Sims's decision, perhaps it's just revision. What if he retitled it Poop? And I still say go with Tyra.

The politics forum enters an RVG thread ... Just put Tyra Banks on the cover. If the poor record is going to receive the 21st Century spin — may as well go all the way. Now that I think about it, I'm very offended that I own the JRVG. Curses ... it's time to play the music and throw away that adorable miniaturized facsimile cover.

    I'm still going with B-R-A-S.
  24. Guy Ritchie also used Pärt's "Alina" for his terrible movie with Madonna. (And he used Della Reese's cover of "C'mon-a My House." Nice touch, there.) When I bought my copy of Alina, there was actually a sticker on the shrinkwrap — hard to believe ECM would do this — that read "Michael Stipe from R.E.M. Recommends!" Recently, I'm a little burned out on Pärt, but I do appreciate/enjoy his music.
