Similar to the Dial and Savoy sets...
JSngry replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Both it and the Hodges say "mercer records, n.y." on the Vogue label The Chaloff is paired on a Vouge LP with an Oscar Pettiford date that does show up on the Mercer discography: Here's a 78 on Futurama that shows Leonard Feather & Oscar Pettiford as being there: and here's that same date on Prestige, years later: Insert other media complicated, much? Sure seems like it... -

1966...was Ellington yet affilated with Norman Granz, and is there even the slightest chance..... no, right? That is the most amazing La Plus Belle Africaine ever (I guess it had not yet become Carney's?), at least that I know of. The contingent might not have "dug" Elvin, but they sure as hell were in his pocket with him.

It's a croaking thing! Old folks with no voices left, they croak. Although, the fish themselves are truly bizarre. First encountered them while tolling (the fishing kind) in the Gulf with my uncle. Reeled in the line (a five hook spreader) and there were some fish on there that started, uh...croaking. Literally. It was bizarre and more than a little creepy. Which is not altogether out of line with the impetus for this thread, right?

Also not on that list (which seems to imply a connection at some point with some kind of Prestige:: . And here's one that's sorta-kinda listed, but I've never heard it anywhere, at least not knowingly... Somebody help! -

Ok, what to make of this? Would this be the same Prestige? -

All I'm sure about is the Ellington/Strayhorn duets, which iirc, first re-entered circulation on Riverside. But I'm thinking that maybe some more items in that vein maybe came out? Or not? I remember when MG included a Mercer Records version of Azure byt Wild Bill Davis on one of his BFTs. I never knew about that one, then got to looking and found that there were a LOT of them I didn't know about. Let's thrown in another label - Dee-Gee. That would also be nice to have collated. And calling all programmers, there's a theme for a show, Before Strata-East, Musician-Owned Labels. Mercer, Dee-Gee, Debut, what's the West Coast one...Nocturne. Hey, you got a show right there! -

And on a tangent, does Concord now own the Mercer Records catalog? I know that Fantasy did, did it come over in the sale? Seems like that's been a horribly overlooked label except for the Ellington/Strayhorn area. -

No sneering here, can't capture the feel of the times without them. I see names like Lem Davis, Rev. Felix Johnson, The Cabineers, and I'm thnking that maybe I don't know or know about these things. Same thing with the Jimmy McPartland PR300 series dates. -

Somewhere recently, there was a mention/presentation of a Charlie Ferguson 78 that's just out there, not collated anywhere. How much more of THAT type stuff is to be had, one-off-ish singles that went out for a walk and never returned? -

Not joking. Never saw it. Never looked for it either, but still, never saw it. -

I'd be interested in a set that didn't include all the stuff that's been regularly reissued in some form or fashion since the late 1960s. There's more there than you might think, but how much, I don't know. Pretty sure that OJC has done most of it in some form or fashion, although a lot of it saw pretty limited release. https://www.jazzdisco.org/prestige-records/catalog-78-rpm-new-jazz-800-prestige-900-par-presentation-1300-new-jazz-1400-80-series/ https://www.jazzdisco.org/prestige-records/catalog-78-rpm-300-700-800-900-series/ I for one didn't even know about this until jsut now: -

MLB 2018: let the games begin!
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Kinda like the Royal Family, right? I'll give it the Dodger & Red Soxs - no matter what else, they've more or less kept the unis more or less consistent. That counts for something in terms of "tradition". Cubs too (although I can go back not THAT far back and find some questionable exceptions...). Bring back stirrup socks. Those things ROCK. -

I'm LOL-ing at this one! "traditional teams", wtf does that mean in 2018? Do they still wear flannel? I think it means "teams that I remember from when I was a kid". Considering the recurring studies that show the sport to have a, uh...,not exactly young fan base, you may be right. Teams that even old people have to call "sir". I wish MLB would place more emphasis on the "tradition" of being able to do shit like bunt, go the other way, or just being able to pitch a game in such a way that you can win a game without having your best stuff and still go 8-9 innings. That's "tradition" to me, the game itself, not the teams. But brand loyalty does make money. -

It would have to be Joe West, wouldn't it.... -
Can't see that video here, but I hope it's Mother's Little Helper or something like that. Paint It Black...there some good handling of the material on that record.

That Stones Jazz thing is a lot better than you might think, and this coming from somebody who's not that much into Joe Pass.

After revisiting the Blakey Hold On album, it may well be the worst Blakey album ever. But I still like it better than most of the e very last ones, which are bettwe music, but with less of a story. I mean, shit, Grant Green & Frank Mitchell on a John Sebastian song? People need to know that somebody thought this was a good idea, for whatever reasons. Don't think it can't happen here. they should have left pop music to the pop players: What's the story there?

it's not the heat, it's the humility.
