Really heartening to see the number of civilians with boats who have independently stepped up and in to rescue people. Folks come "down here" and see so many people with bass boats and such and think wtf does all these people gots all these BOATS for, and, you know, people live around lakes and gulfs and stuff, they like to go fishing. Fishing is fun, great exercise (in patience! HAHAHA) But that doesn't mean that just because you got a boat that you're going to be a good person willing to step up when your community needs you. I know plenty self-absorbed assholes who got boats that wouldn't even think of doing such a thing. Fortunately for everybody, none of them live down around Houston. BTW - LTB knew a trolling motor when she saw one. One more reason I LOVE me some LTB!

Oh, make no mistake - fire ans can and will fuck you up. Whether or not that's going on in Houston, I can't say. But - fire ants can and will fuck you yup in a most serious way.

Is it true that Jet Blue is vending out their actual flying to a fleet of crop dusters?

Only heard a quick update this AM, but is the rain finally moving eastward?

I saw a video of some cat walking through the water with his family, and he reached down and pulled out a fish. Seriously! Looked big enough to eat, too! It's dark now, and I don't know how the other Houston stations covered today, KPRC was all I had readily and consistently available to stream on my TV (KTRK was a potential option, but they only stream "evening news" and were not available all day). But it was as compelling as anything I've seen on live TV news in quite a while. Truly local coverage of almost epic/global proportion. Good news, though, as far as it goes, the National Guard has showed up now and is mobilizing a whole buttload of bigass trucks to get people the hell outta danger. When I was a kid, "National Guard" was sorta synonymous with "The Man", but hey, they got a job to do, as directed, and more than once I've seen them do a good job in a good way. What they're doing here is noble, because there's a lot of people who need help. Anyway, if you have Roku, the app is called NewsON and I find it one of the more interesting apps available. The dams were built in the 1940s after massive floods swamped downtown Houston in 1929 and 1935. Both are listed among the six dams across the nation most critically in need of repair. Those repairs are underway, but won’t be completed until 2020. Lars Zetterstrom of the Army Corps of Engineers said water will likely be released from the Addicks Reservoir beginning at 2 a.m. and from the Barker Reservoir at 11 a.m. The release will cause a rise of 4 to 6 inches per hour in the Buffalo Bayou and will cause more water to flow both upstream and downstream. Homes could be impacted by 2 p.m., Zetterstrom said. Zetterstrom said the dams are performing as designed after Tropical Storm Harvey dumped record amounts of rainfall on Harris County. He said that the release is needed to reduce the risk of further flooding. Engineers are working with officials in Houston, Harris County and Fort Bend County to coordinate the locations that will need to be evacuated, Zetterstrom said. "reduce the risk of further flooding"....does that translate to "if we don't do this, the dam is likely to break"? Oh shit...

It's still raining. People are continuing to come out of the flooded areas, be it on foot or in boats. KPRC had a photo of residents of a nursing home sitting in wheelchairs up to their waist in floodwater. Thankfully, the photo was taken just before the were rescued. But the live coverage of people (and pets!) continuing to come up to thigher ground out of flooded neighborhoods is intense. And it's still raining.

KPRC has reporters and cams out in the streets covering rescue efforts, etc. One guy is out on a boat with a homeowner who is just boating around his neighbor hood looking to see if anybody needs help getting out. The stiation is getting Facebook and email requests for assistance. Seems like at least part of Houston is watching the flood on tv to see if there's anything they can do to help out. Same thing happens here when we have those really bad tornados. Weather events of this magnitude are,,,humbling, to say the least.

Been getting the KPRC live stream on Roku this AM. Very compelling real-time coverage.

Well, that's one way to look at it, you know, ooooh, CONTROVERSIAL!!!! I just think he's boring too often for his own good, doesn't get my "teeth on edge" (I guess not, although I don't know what that means, really. my teeth hit on many surfaces that have edges, like a good piece of pie). Then again, I'm probably old enough to be his father, don't buy his records, don't read The New Yorker these days, and only read his blog when somebody brings it up here, so, I don't know that he'd really give any more of a fuck about what I think any more than I do him. I was also pissed of about a lot of the things that seem to put his "teeth on edge" (what kind of teeth are we talking here, anyway?) back when they were actually happening, and whatever need to happen to stop it didn't happen, so, really, what's done is done. I don't care if it's Wynton or Ivanton, what's done is done, and if you think there's a future in bitching about it, you're right, but I got better ways to spend my time, like taking the next.... That train never went off the tracks!

I have no interest in Jutta Hipp, but I can tell you that Leonard Feather has had a reputation as a conniving self-serving pimp (is there any other kind?) of his influence and power that has not exactly been a secret for not exactly a few quick minutes. You either played ball with him or yeah, he'd do his best to fuck you up. Do I have first-hand experience of that? Of course not! That's why they're called "reputations"! Having said that, some very good people did play ball with him, and hey, life is full of unsavory scumbags with power, I lost count about 30 or so years ago. And you know, some people don't mind that because...whatever. Some people just don't mind that. But some people do. Takes all kinds, apparently. And absolutely, as a "composer" he was pretty/extremely limp, but he did get a good one off with "I Remember Bird". Still, Fuck Leonard Feather. Or even better, since he's now dead, DON'T fuck him. Let him lie in the ground waiting for all eternity for somebody, anybody, to want to do it so he'll once again have leverage. Deny him his posthumous jollies.
