  1. Another Rangers reliever to the DL, Mark Lowe...tweaked a side muscle while bending over to pick up a ball in warmups...unbelievable.

  3. State lotteries are government-sponsored activities that are predicated on the random collection and random redistribution of individual citizens' funds. If the state excludes any citizen from participation on the grounds that they are too poor and/or too ignorant to participate in either the collection or the potential redistribution of these funds, the state is no longer sponsoring a truly public activity but is instead facilitating a discriminatory redistribution of funds among selected individuals.
  4. "Volunteer tax"? Really? How about "(in)discretionary income"? I don't know about y'all, but I live in a fairly affluent suburb, and we get the same targeted advertisements as everybody else - and the same long lines the nights before/of the results. I don't play. Won't play. But hey, if we want to find a causality between being poor and/or ignorant and playing the lottery, I don't think that playing the lottery would be the cause of being poor and/or ignorant, if you know what I mean... A fool and his money, etc. "Cruelty"? Ok, let's have a state-sponsored lottery where your ability to participate is means-tested. The only way to luck into big bucks is to have a little extra pocket change in the first place. Let's see how that denial-of-hope game goes. I don't like lotteries at all. It's a sucker's game, pure and simple. But that cow done left the barn years ago, found a break in the fence, done crossed over into the next county, and might be running towards the state line by now. Good luck getting it back. You want to get indignant about targeting the poor and/or ignorant, go into the hood of your choice and look at the billboards up around schools and stuff. Alcohol, tobacco, all kinds of "over 18" products. No respect for hopes and dreams of the youth and stuff like that, all with ethnically-specific images. The lottery ads, otoh, are all the same ads. We got the same ones in Plano that they do in Oak Cliff that they do in Waxahachie that they do in the Third Ward. Lotteries, at least as I've experienced them, are equal opportunity pickpockets. Sure, some people carry more cash than they can afford to lose in their pockets than others, but the pickpocket don't really give a damn who you are or how much you got.
  5. Coming back to this one. Better than most, got a good bouncy/lively bouncy liveliness to it verging on the shaggable frisky.
  6. Hustle, trap, sucker's game, yeah, I can see that. But "tax"? What is being taxed, exactly? A tax is something you pay (or are supposed to pay) whether you want to or not. Lotteries are totally voluntary, unless we subscribe to the theory that the poor and ignorant are devoid of free will.
  7. Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with the resilience - and depth - the Rangers are showing in the face of all the injuries and that godawful late May/early June stretch. I was at the games last night & Wednesday. Neither were pretty, and neither were easy (and the bullpen was used heavily in both games), but they got it done both times. Not at all crisp, but hey. The offense seems to be slowly but surely coming back around too, which is good, because in this 100+ degree heat, unless you got a starter who's in the groove (and hopefully Matt Harrison can get there tonight), it's going to get sloppy and you need some runs. The Wednesday night game against the Tigers was 11-9 going into the bottom of the 8th, and last night's game had the tying run on third with one out in the 9th. And last night's game went almost four hours, with everybody throwing a lot of pitches damn near every inning - and working slowly while doing it. I got exhausted just sitting there watching it! Now, if only those Angels would cool off...not gonna happen, though. They're as hot as anybody right now, and no reason to think it won't stay so for a good while more.

  16. Class, probably not. But act? No way. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got other things to be on with besides Making Life Fair Again By Ambushing Vicarious Cyber-Targets. Beers next weekend, maybe?
  17. Well, I am sorry to hear about it. I've lost some myself. You wanna play My Hurt Is Bigger Than Yours or do you want to process it in an adult manner and get on with living motherfucking life?
  18. Moderators, can we change the name of this thread to The "People Coming In Off The Street After Every Other Place Is Closed and Taking Up Here Where They Left Off There" Corner? I mean, I'm really sorry about the dead family members and all that, I mean, bummer, maybe we can all do dinner and swap stories sometimes, but the notion that there's some cyber-vigilantes alerting each other of the Presence Of The Unstoppable Apologist so they can get together and coordinate their SWAT attack is just a little fucked up in its own way...vengeance in search of catharsis on the way to revenge or something. Well...good luck on that one. You'll find your peace and your justice in and with yourself or you'll not find it at all.
