  3. None of it I've heard has struck me personally as "essential". although perhaps the best of the Doo-Wop stuff might be considered "definitive". I'm just not enough into Doo-Wop to essentialize any of it.

  5. Sometimes you need a reminder. Well, here one is. Paragons of strength individually, put together they are something else! Mssrs. Roach, Jordan, Waldron, & Khan do indeed speak to the matters at hand. Different as it was then, it's still the same, if not more so. Max Roach as a person might have had some flaws, but the music he made here certainly doesn't. And this is one of Clifford Jordan's (many) finest hours. The next time you feel weak, have a listen to these brothers speak and go ahead on, secure in the knowledge. Speak, Brother, SPEAK!

  9. Pretty sure that's a cricket expression, and the only crickets we have around here are either chirping at night or being being used for crappie bait...but as far as the sticky part goes, at this time of year, pretty much everything is... Rumors are out that the Rangers are interested in Beltran http://www.lonestarb...-carlos-beltran and considering all the problems this team is having now that don't involve waiting/hoping for proven performers to get back to proven performance, I don't know but that I'm not liking this at all... I spent a weekend doing out of town gigs, and from what I've gathered upon returning is that what the Rangers really need now are 1) at least one proven starter. I fear that Ogando has hit his wall, and he's too special a talent to ruin in the pursuit of short-term glory 2) mental enemas for more than a few offensive players (Kinsler, Murphy, and possibly Cruz, the line starts with you) and 3) a pre-approved presidential pardon for any and all actions that might result from the display of emotionally-appropriate behavior in the face of repeatedly and blatantly inept umpiring. I don't see how Beltran provides any of this, not even with the possible addition of K-Rod. We have past-their-prime relievers of unpredictable efficiency aplenty as it is.

  21. The Savoy stuff is more loose-y fun than the Dial, even though the Dials have more stone classics overall. But real-up y'all, let's not ask any more questions about "how's this Bird?" or "how's that Bird?" Let's just agree that if we want to hear Bird that we'll just buy whatever we see and worry about it later, because none of it will suck, and average Bird is better than a great many almost everybody elses, and great Bird is just about as great as music gets, period.
