Bird might well be the only person of whom I'd pay the necessary price to have every recorded note..if I had the money at the necessary time. Some days are better than others, ya' know?

Love it when that happens! I was really...distressed about the YouTube results...no gems there. so I was wondering if this was a guy who was fresh early and then went soft, or what, including maybe that the stuff on YouTube is stuff that I'm just not getting.

Found this 1960 album on the internet, and really like the songs, grooves, & singing. The song "Play-Boy" in particular hits a sweet spot with me. Most YouTube videos are of a later vintage and/or feature a significantly more conspicuous "pop" production esthetic than does this one. Not that there's anything wrong with that... English information about the man seems spotty at best after a few half-hearted Google searches. The music isn't really bossa..."samba" perhaps? Either way, the harmonies in the arrangements seem to show an awareness of "modern jazz", and the rhythmic feel is definitely inching towards a bossa-ish "floatiness"...a time of transition, perhaps? Or not? Brazillian music is such a deep well & I've got little more than a dipper into it... any information and/or edification welcome.

Is Wes really playing live or playing to his record?
JSngry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
Almighty $ or not, it is so freakin' cool to know that Wes Montgomery did The Hollywood Palace. I don't care that it's essentailly instrumental pop music, or that it displays about 1/100 of an iota of Wes Montgomery's true art. It's Wes Montgomery speaking a language of peace, beauty, skill, knowledge, and truth for an audience of millions. It's ugly work, often with ugly results, but dammit, somebody's got to do it or else the soulsuckers win. Hell, they win anyway, but you can't just give up without giving them a fight on their own turf. Unless and until artists (not "artists") can create and sustain a business environment on and of their own, these are the consequences of being human. Wes Montgomery took one for the team. How much more soul than that can you have? Cord, yes. Orchestra, no. The bands on those shows were almost always offstage or in a pit. -
From 20/20, I'm a sucker for "I Went To Sleep"..such a peacefully narcotic yet scrupulously detailed little gem of yawny bliss! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acyPC4aww2c

Man, we needed that win today! Caught a big break from an umpiring snafu on that double (s/b an on-the-yellow-line HR), but maybe that's kosmic leveling of the blatant UFU (umpiring fuck up, and is it just me, or do the umpires as a whole not look so good these days?) on the Cano "H"BP from Thursday. Either way...if not for the obvious legal fallout or overwhelming moral wrongitude of committing the act, I sould so so SO slit Dammit Darren Oliver's throat and drink his blood and then puke it back into his open throat wound right now. Damn straight I would. Yes, it is that bad! Otherwise, if and when this team finds it's soul and holds on to it, I think it will be Adrian Beltre who defines it. His numbers don't look so great right now, but I tell you - he is one of the grittiest SOBs I've ever seen. Him & Michael Young pretty much carried this team by themselves while Hamilton & Cruz were out, and now that they're back (Josh in a kind of Zen-Jesus zone where his bad plays and the good ones all provoke the same reaction, Nellie...still kinda lost more often than not, c'mon dude, feel the love!), it is still Beltre who never lets up, even after a screw-up, who always lays it on the line, and who survives to deliver a key contribution at a key time, as he did today. This team is still not yet "centered" (and really with a bullpen as unpredictable as this, how can they be?). But Beltre grits up, gets down, and then smiles and acts like an angel when he gets it done. On a team that may well have the best smiles in baseball, anything to bring them out more often is appreciated here! Ogando tomorrow, and this will be a real test for him, I think. The Yankees pretty much reamed him up the arse last time out, and time before that (against Detroit), he took a little while to setlle in. Every outing from here on out is uncharted territory for him in terms of single-season innings pitched, so...who knows? Go Phils!!!

Looks like they don't even do Sidewinder on it, so I don't know what happened at AMG...
-
Just looked at AMG & this is the album in question (BST 4378): Per AMG, there is a version of "The Sidewinder" on it, so Morgan probably should have gotten a composer, not performer, credit. AMG also gives Billy Harper a performer credit for this album, though, so I don't know...maybe for that one cut? Dan?

Thanks. That raises another question - does the Bird's Eyes in toto series represent the complete (as of their time) collection of unofficial Bird material?
-
Dude, we gotta have IT defrag a hard drive remotely. No way they're letting a single user install something like that. We got zero admin rights, can't even set the clock and date. Too bad.

Has this ever seen any release, even unofficial?

I Don't Know What This Means
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Yeah, but I don't see how you don't notice that in the original "pop" version. That tune was obviously way hip when The Stylistics did it. If you don't hear that, you're not hearing the song, you're just hearing the "style" Check this shit out, check out those changes! As far as "syncopation", again, it's already there. I don't know what's not already there for the hearing. Hell, Freddie Hubbard was all over that tune back in the day. Some others were too. It's not like you gotta change shit around on this one to make it hip. All you gotta do is keep playing the tune instead of cycling the chorus over and over like The Stylistics version did. If you get distracted by that to the point of losing the song itself, hey, your bad, not the song's. That's what I mean - what is there to "suspect" "was there" when it's obviously already there? Chord changes be chord changes, dig? Doesn't this cat trust his ears enough to hear an inventive pop song when he hears it? Does he need confirmation/validations of his suspicions by hearing the song played by a jazz musician? It just don't make sense to me. -
Well so it is! But this is the for-real Renee who inspired teh song (and "Pretty Ballerina"!, so I'm sticking with don't!

Also, I read the OP to mean that the recordings were those of Hank Williams in Germany, when actually it is Bear Family that is in Germany. -
http://www.allmusic.com/album/whats-it-all-about-r2206660/review Is the reviewer saying that the appealing elements of the song as written have been there all along? Uhhh....yeah. Isn't that kinda like saying that the red meat and sweet smell of the strawberries at the market are - as one suspects they always have been - inherent in the fruit's basic architecture? I mean, what is there to suspect? I don't know what this means.
