  3. Two things I don’t know that I’ve ever seen/heard mentioned before: “Shhh/Peaceful” (the groove, not the head) goes back as far as to one section of “Country Son” The basic A-Section groove of “It’s About That Time” (the budah-buh thing) appears to be a formalized extrapolation of what the band got into on the solo sections of “Tout de Suite”. So much logical evolution is revealed, in this case, by the unreleased material in this & the Quintet sets. Marvelous! Yeah, if I'm reading the notes right, what's presented is as best of a reconstruction of the original session tape as was possible, not the actual session tape itself.
  4. Been listening to this and the Quintet sets all over again this past week, and I gotta say, the IASW box is shockingly revelatory...not necessarily "great" always, but...to hear all the changes Miles was going through, how many different ways he looked at to contextualize the ideas that he finally coalesced with Bitches Brew, it's a fascinating look at the creative process. The changes really began at the tail end of the Quintet's life, but here is where the corner is turned with no looking back. And what really fucks me up is the unedited-ish version of "Shhh/Peaceful", how there was an actual head in place that not only ended up on the proverbial cutting room floor, but one that also had a passage that echoed/predicted Zawinul's title tune, and one that is repeatedly referenced in the solos. Who knew? And "Ghetto Walk"!!! How did we get Big Fun and not get this? This IS big fun! All in all, for "only" 3 CDs, this is one hell of an adventure. Perfect it's not, but fun? You betcha'! Besides, I swear that before I die, I will be in a band that plays "Dual Process" in public, more than once, and plays the living shit out of it.

  7. Don't know her overall output that well, but the album that cut comes from is just crazymad badass. Talk about phrasing that leaves no room for error and doesn't make any, this is it. There's a waaay uptempo version of "Nobody Else But Me" on there that is just nuts, the lady nails it and leaves no doubt about it. Interestingly enough, the ballads take the same tact - total confidence in pitch and timing, which results in things being done that can take your breath away. Also interesting for me is the title tune, which for years I had only known through Al Jarreau's version. Come to find out, Kral did the first "profile" version, but the song itself, which has such an uber-"middle class hipster" vibe, to it was written by a member of The Kingston Trio! Anyway, that's an album I'll freely recommend to anybody, whether they like singers or not. At some point it becomes such a silly quibble to deny fine music just because there's a voice and words involved. Dare I go so far as to say that it's actually stupid? I guess I do!

Oh, things are always ready to happen. It's just a matter of who's ready to do them. And people who don't have vision or ambition usually won't be. Which is not to say that those who do will be, just that those who celebrate craft as an end unto itself will end up doing what's already been done by somebody else. All well and good, at least until that's all that's left.

And Craft is for "Craftsmen". Craftsmen are quite frequently inventive & delightful people whose work reflects those qualities, but equating Craft with Art is what enables stuff like WalMart & ultimately cheapens & destroys both.

  14. That might have relevance to me if I had any interest in Dixon as a "composer" to begin with. However, I don't. Like "artist", it's a term/concept that's outlived any currently feasible meaningful execution.
  15. Wow...D-Wreck Holland falters, sputters, collapses, and then comes back like a BAAAAAADDDDDD mofo. Still young, still developing, if my heart doesn't attack me by season's end, I hope to see him blossom into an A-1 starter. But that bullpen...geez. that shit would kill a dead man. You can't ride Arthur Rhodes & Darren Oliver all year long, not at their age, but right now, that's all we got that is dependable (except Feliz, and after his last outing, I'm not too sure about him). Nevertheless, Kinsler & Andrus are getting it back together, and Nelson Cruz is starting to see the ball again, so... GO RED SOX (for tonight & Sunday, and every other time they play the Angels)!!!

It's a small world full of small people. Mingus was anything but small. People watch movies on cell phones & get pissed off when they have to wait. How the hell they gonna play "Fables Of Faubus" or "Meditations On Integration", especially when they think that repeating the answers to "Cherokee" or "Giant Steps" is freakin' ART?
