  2. Hey, if you're gonna put your dick in it, it's in your best interest for it to be healthy. That shit don't happen all by itself, and sometimes it's on you. Man up and do the right thing. Same goes for a relationship. Exponentially so. I speak bluntfully but true..

  4. I was wondering, actually...so you don't have any email sent to you since Sunday?
  5. It's not that Joe!
  6. But not as good as frog legs. Then again, few things are!
  7. Rangers waste a fine start by Ogando, another outstanding bullpen outing from Cody Eppley, and a nerve-wracking but ultimately effective one from Pedro Strop with a 9th inning circus of Darren Oliver ineffectiveness (bloop hits hurt as much as homers if they keep coming), a rare defensive gaffe by Beltre, and just...bad stuff in general. We start a 20 games in 20 days stretch with a 4-6 homestand. Tomorrow we go out west to face the A's for 4 & then M's for 3, then back home w/no break to face the NYY & the A's again, then a day off, finally, and then here come the Angels. If this team doesn't find some focus soon, they're going to be in much of a hole by the time they do. Grrrrr.....
  8. Yeah, I thought there was gonna be a marinade involved. At least a rub.
  9. No lead is safe, but Cody Eppley, even though he gave up the game tying homer, made that his only mistake. Otherwise, he looked good, a bright spot of light in a sea st darkness, even if a win is definitely still a win.
  10. Rangers' pitching news continues to be depressing. Looks like the Brandon Webb deal might well not pan out: http://www.lonestarball.com/2011/4/27/2136656/you-really-try-to-not-to-read-too-much-into-two-innings-of-an#comments Darren O'Day to 60-day DL with torn labrum in hip: http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/04/darren-oday-to-60-day-dl-with.html Not a big O'Day fan here, but still...If American public schools really wanted to address what is wrong with this country, they would start cranking out quality pitchers like McDonalds cranks out "hamburgers", that's what they would do.

  15. Also from CT: Sure, these quotes are from a long time ago, and sure, Cecil Taylor says a lot of things. But I think that to think of him as somebody who creates in a world where his "African-Americanism" is just one equal among too may others to mention, is to miss the point of why Cecil Taylor is Cecil Taylor. One more quote from him, again, an old one, but note the importance he places on self-awareness & realization, no matter who you are: Substitute "the world" for "America" and it's still a highly relevant quote, perhaps more than ever. But nowhere do you see a mention of "fading out" or consciously "blending out" (as opposed to "blending in") your core self/being/history/roots/whatever, of doing anything other than bringing who you are to the table and then going from there, as you are. Nowhere. Of course you evolve, but you grow from the roots up, always.
  16. Who is this "everyone"? I came to Cecil around 1972, and...it was all about "jazz" then, although the Euro-element was never denied (why should it be?) or minimized (ditto). But the overriding/underlying "esthetic" was plainly understood to be "African-American", even among many who did not really care for him. So when did all this change? I mean, geez, just listen to the duets with Max...as plain as the nose on our face... You know it does. Or did...
  17. "Intellectual" is a totally relative concept, eventually. For too many (imo) people, it's little more than a mirror in which they can preen & prepare to fight off the demons of "things unknown", a crude weapon forged in the tepid heat of a poorly executed insecure vanity. We do? Although I acknowledge it's presence, that is definitely not the way I talk, think, or feel about him. Never have, and have never really felt the need to. "88 tuned drums", the cliche of yore, that's where I've always heard it.

  21. The only thing I think is even partially useful is to ascertain how successful anybody is in meeting their goals/needs. and even there, you get into some sticky ground, because you're depending on your understanding of what those goals/needs are, which will of necessities both innocent and not be subject to limitations, prejudices, preferences, misunderstandings, and manipulations. Really, all you can do is share your likes/dislikes/passions, and see what takes with who. Beyond that, hey, fuck it.
  22. That it's neither good nor accurate to listen to music as "types", lest we confuse style with substance. I'm in total agreement with that, but there's nothing in there that calls for the willful delegitimizing of very real differences. In fact, I'd think that an understanding, embracing even, of those differences is a prerequisite to grasping the different substances of different musics, and then you can find the commonalities that exist. But to just flat out bitch and moan that Bill Dixon is not truly a composer but Webern (or whoever) is... it's just so...petty, and not really relevant to anything, not really. Same thing with comparing instrumental prowess between players of totally different genres, yeah, you can do it, but what is the point in saying that Horace Parlan was hardly Sviatoslav Richter? What does that do to enhance the understanding of either man's effectiveness with his own vocabulary? And that's it right there - the lack of a respect/awareness/whatever of different vocabularies used to express different specific realities posed as the contention that all realities are the same, therefore can and should be judged by one standard, as if all music and all people's music has the same needs and the same intents. Yes, at some meta-level that's the case, but you don't get there by making simple A-B comparisons between porcupines and pineapples.
  23. One of my most favorite Shepp sides, period. But for $50.00? I'd keep looking.
