  2. Ok, sexuality aside, is there any delving into the unfortunate career arc (or more accurately, lack thereof) of Mr. Nichols? Did people just not like his tunes or what?
  3. If nothing else, if he was gay, it speaks yet further to how the jazz world of Nichols time was so "progressive" in some ways, so not in others, not at all unlike the "60s counterculture" (both white and black) which in many ways evolved out of that jazz world. Without getting polemical, I'd think that this could be addressed in the context of why Nichol's career stalled out so badly, which is what I'm really curious about, his sexual orientation really being of no interest to me otherwise.
  4. Well, that's kinda what I was hinting at that the Mosaic booklet hinted at, but I was gonna leave it to the people who have seen the book to explicitify.
  5. Will this bio delve into why Nichols was "not accepted" by his peers? That's long been a mystery to me. The Mosaic booklet "vaguely speculated" but drew no conclusions. It would be nice to have an answer as to why this most talented individual never got over, even a little.

  8. They're probably sitting there wondering why they're getting all these phone calls all of a sudden...
  9. I'm very intrigued by where this video might have originated...especially since conventional wisdom has it that Spector paid Ike big bucks to be totally not there for anything having to do with the production of that record. Listening to it again, though...is that not the most perfect, redefining the possibilities of reality pop/soul record ever made? And is it not a crime against humanity that the mono 45 mix has all but vanished from general circulation?
  10. Yeah, that's the thing...most of those folks weren't people who had spent their years hanging around trying to get acting gigs. They were very well-seasoned club/theatre/etc performers. You think LaWanda Page just all of a sudden learned to tell dirty jokes so she could captialize on Aunt Esther? Hardly! Actually, I remember seeing LaWanda and Redd on either Merv or Dinah Shore back in the day, and they had an old promo pic of LaWanda as a shake dancer! All I'm sayin', and I know it goes without saying, is that when you're watching Sanford & Son, you're not watching a TV show, you're watching a comedy revue featuring some verterans from a life, time, and place that was every bit as real as it was unknown to all but those who were in it. And btw - does the announcer on those Lawanda comedy albums sound like Bubbles Whitman to y'all?
  11. I gotta disagree with the "lack of dynamic contrasts" thing, though. This guy's mature playing is nothing but differing contours, melodiacally, harmonically, rhtymoically, and, yes, dynamically. Hell, in one phrase alone, the dynamics can go from here to here and back in the course of three notes. What you very rarely (if ever, get is things going up to here. So there is plenty of contrast, just not on a typical "jazz scale". Warne was not one for the obvious...thank god!
  12. But wait there's more... Rudy Ray Moore ain't got NOTHIN' on LaWanda...
  13. No you're not crapping on the thread, you're respectfully expressing an honest opinion. No problem. You're wrong, but no problem! (seriously, it's cool)

  16. Seems to me that a lot of the parts of that music showed up in the C&W of the 90s. Quiet as it's kept... So maybe they destroyed Country too! Jolly good show, lads!

  22. Really!?!?!?!?! interesting... It's just been over the last few months for me, but it does make the issue of ISP server conflict seem even more worth investigating...
