I say that it's sometimes hard to discern between "refinement", "paring down", and "decline". I also say that even more important/relevant than "technial" vs. "idea" is how inspired/engaged/etc/youknowwhatImean he was at any given moment. That seems to me the wildest of the wild cards right there, and with all the number of variables in play, hey. I also say that for the longest, I had a really hard time reaching for a Columbia Monk session when I had all the other stuff on the shelf right beside it. That's opened up some over the years, but only some, if a lot of some. In closing, I say that the cat's long dead, and will be for the foreseeable future. So hear what you want/need to hear, be inspired by it how you want/need to be inspired, and proceed accordingly.

Grass Is Greener is a fun album. I might have to pick this one up as well. "Grass roots" is as good, but in a different way. Not so greasy; Bobby Hutcherson and Harold Ousley are very good. Great instrumentation - tenor, vibes, bass, drums. LOTS of people here would reckon it superior to "Grass is greener". MG Please allow me to say that this is a mighty fine 2-fer. of the "another day in the lives of..." variety. There's plenty other musics that are "deeper", and yeah, there should be. There better be. But this is just some damn good playing captured for posterity. Nothing more, and certainly nothing less.

Butter!! WTF?? Now I know you've lost your mind. Olive oil my friend, olive oil. Nothing wrong with olive oil, as matter of fact I haven't met a fat from the natural world (vs. the minds of Monsanto) that I didn't like. But butter makes everything better. Good fresh butter on a big slab of bread is one of the finest things this world has to offer. I didn't mean to imply butter and bread don't go together. But a seeded semolina was meant for oil. But I like butter! It reminds me of Maria Schneider...

Well, I hear you, but the thing with this stuff is to get it fresh(ish) and eat it up in 48 hours or less. Not a problem. And it never sees the inside of an oven once it's home, so it either goes fast or elase it goes out fast. We do have local bakeries, but none of them are "conveniently located". They're all off in other parts of town than where we usually need to go to get what we usually need. Time's at a premium these days, and this is damn good bread even if it's not optimal, so hey, a pleasant enough compromise, and it beats the hell outta Roman Meal. But if you can hook me up with some world class sesame semolina that I don't gotta drive outta my way for, please, feel free!
