Well hey. Just listened to some samples at AMG and went on ahead and ordered both of his Hyena CDs from CDU. Sounds like some hard-edged acoustic funk-jazz that's not trying to be warm and fuzzy. A little bit of hip-hop influence as far as beats and tempos go, and no apparent fear of tension through dissonance and intonation. Sounds like there's plenty of street in the music and the players. I can get with that, especially at $9.75 a CD.

Long story short - the song "Walk Away Renee" was inspired by an infatuation that the songwriter had on a then teen-aged girl named Renee Fladen, who was the girlfriend of one of the other band members. Supposedly she moved to Philly w/her parents and was never heard from by any of the band again. But... There's a Renee Fladen-Kamm in the Bay Area who's rumored to be the same Renee. She's a voice teacher/opera company director, and is also rumored to have claimed to some her students that she's the Renee of "Walk Away Renee". You can do a google search by both names and scope all this out. So, is anybody game for contacting her in a non-threatening manner and scoping this out? After all, the Whipped Cream model was discovered a few years ago, so why not Renee? The worst that can happen is that she'll walk away.

I duuno man, factor in contestants' mothers, sisters, aunties, whatever, to say nothing of whatever wannabes/hangers on might have been involved in/hanging around the pageant, and I'm not so sure that the odds don't even up. But I could be wrong. Guess there's only one way to really find out, but none of the agents I know are that, uh... "inventive".

Actually, one thing leads to another. I start out doing perfectly serious research, and then all of a sudden something pops up that's just all, like, "WTF?!?!?!" and I gotta follow the trail to see where it leads. Because as they say, truth is stranger than fiction, and I think we all need to have that notion presented, lest we become compalcent and think otherwise. Plus, it's good for a laugh. And I defintiely like to laugh! Now what I'm wondering is this - at which gig did The Moments (who, it turns out, later became Ray, Goodman, & Brown, which I did not know and now do, although what difference it makes is beyond me, at this moment anyway) get more you-know-what - the prison or the beauty pageant? I'm thinkng that it could've gone either way...

Actually, the album has been reissued, with alternate takes, as Birds & Monks: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...315581102&BAB=E Those were two good albums. I've got both LPs, and although a few cuts are "disposable", overall it's some very strong playing, especially by Griffin, Henderson, & Land. Guess I'd better upgrade to the CDs w/the extra material while they're still available.

Just to clarify, the group's name was Brighter Side of Darkness. "Love Jones" was a really goofy hit of theirs which was later parodied by Cheech & Chong as "Basketball Jones". I mean, I was alive and well then, and I wore my share of stuff I'd rather not think about today, and I saw some pretty out-there shit on the bodies of people I knew. But even at that.... DAMN!!!!
