  1. Larry Appelbaum, studio engineer/supervisor at the Library of Congress, holds the very rare previously unpublished live recording of the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltraine, at the Library of Congress, Tuesday, April 05, 2005, in Washington. The tape was recorded in November 29, 1957 at Carnegie Hall in New York. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)
  2. YEOW!!!!! Brownie, you RULE!
  3. Yes, Bertrand, please report back!
  4. Probably(?) because it's not a commercial recording.
  5. I have no recollection whatsoever of ever hearing about Monk & Trane playing together at Carnegie Hall. Maybe individually on the same bill, but even that I'm not too sure about. We shall see...
  6. Nothing on any of the other jazz boards, and just this AP article on the web, apprently from within the hour. Guess this is genuinely "breaking" news! But WTF IS IT??????
  7. Heard this on the KNTU-AP News at noon whilst in the car, going to grab a pack of smokes. Rushed right home, checked it out, and here it is. Couldn't believe it then, still having a hard time believeing it. Not enough info. But, as it says here: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20050405/D899BEEO1.html
  8. Dude, Bowman lives in Plano now, not too far from my crib. We cross paths on the occasional tux gig and such. You want me to send him some robins?
  9. EXACTLY at 80,000 miles!
  10. Well then, that would seem to be the same Dawn label that did all the jazz LPs then. Same logo:
  11. Thanks for that info, Mike. Some things to be on the lookout for, definitely. Here's a pretty neat Kenton site, by former Kenton publicist/insider Noel Wedder: http://home.comcast.net/~noel_wedder/wsb/reflections.htm His comments about City of Glass are provocative, frustrating, and representative, I suspect, of the way that many in the Kenton circle viewed Graettinger: Wedder's full site here: http://home.comcast.net/~noel_wedder/wsb/kentonindex2.html
  12. Dude, that's the way it goes - we never go anywhere, but nobody knows us anyways. It's like being buried in an unmarked grave, except you can't leave your unpaid bills for your heirs to take care of.
  13. Might have been a singles session? But yeah, three tunes and out, that's not a good sign...
  14. Your memory's bad, J.D. - our paths crossed a few times at NT in the late 70s/early 80s, usually having something to do with one or both of the Babcock brothers, or with Conrad having shit stolen by people I was marginally associated with. However, I was in the process of leaving town, you were in the process of coming in, and we were both usually in no condition to remember anything, if you know what I mean... Then we played together at a rehearsal in Denton put together by guitarist Scott Whigham. You brough in a tune, I brought in one called "Only Their Ears Were Pink", and Scott had a bunch of unformed sketches. I think that Drew might have been there too, maybe Earl Harvin as well. Whatever, it was a mess... But yeah, the Winedale was the beginning of our "modern-day" knowing of each other. Pappy drinks to that!
  15. Or when sociopathic behavior can only be described in terms of a process of mere "obstruction"... Glad you're ok, dude.
  16. 71, but I'm adopted. Don't know my family medical history. Wouldn't mind making 75, but after that, it's like an American car after 80,000 miles, and frankly, I don't know if I'm up for that...
  17. If I do it for you, I'll have to do it for President Bush. But crack open a bottle, get out the ashtray, and we'll see if we can't work something out.
  18. Does this Dawn label seem to be the same Dawn from the mid-1950s?
  19. No, not at all. It's just that a new thread might well get more attention than an old one, especially when it would be promoting an upcoming event such as the Reuben Radding gig. Draw as much attention to that one as possible! As for Drew, hell, I've known and played with him on and off for 30+ years, so I'm never surprised when (or where) I see him.
  20. That information really deserves a thread of its own!
