  1. Yeah, I'm a-goin' down to the feed store this mornin' and a-buyin' me a packet or two of them there kitty seeds. Reckon I better get me some Kitty Chow while I'm at it. Them critters look like they can eat some groceries. I'm just a-wondering how much you water 'em.
  2. There was an early 70s Columbia 2-LP thing, some guitar concert or something, and it had a set from Tiny Grimes that was pretty mindbending. Not at all what you'd expect based on his past recordings. Shawn can tell you about it. But hey, WHOA! Let us not forget that Mr. Alvino Rey also provided early employment for Mr. Charles Mingus, as well as the other Mssrs. that Mr. Milazzo mentioned. More kudos to George Freeman. The word "idiodyncratic" seems to have been coined especially for him, but dammit, he can make me smile out loud everytime he plays, and that goes a long way in my book.
  3. And R&B was beginning to find a teen audience by 1950. A small one, to be sure, but it was mixed in with some other stuff. "Be-Bop" is one of those terms that can mean totally different things to different people. For the R&B/jazz "bebop" thing, see the scene in Blackboard Jungle where the teens bust up a Bix 78 and then groove on some Stan Kenton. But you know they were digging Red Prysock & Bull Moose Jackson too.
  4. As would be Manfred Wesley.
  5. You use your fingers? Maybe that's my problem...
  6. Oh, THAT guy! Yeah, I've heard very good things about him. I'll have to check him out. Django's just opened up in the last year or so, and I'm not too much in club-going mode any more. I've been in too many of them when they turn the lights on, if you know what I mean.

This view looks pretty good to me! More "tales" like this, please!
  8. Saddle shoes and ducktails? I'm still leaning towards it being "be-bop" of the early crossover R&B type.
  9. What funny is the notion of Macey O'Parker!
  10. So this is Ogerman? Definitely in the Riddle lineage, and a great writer his own damn self. This sounds more like Riddle than Ogerman, but I could see it being the younger man. Great writing "in the genre" whoever it is. The 3 of those 4 trumpeters that I know (Steve Madaio is a big ? to me) are superb lead players. Brashear, btw, played the trumpet breaks on Van McCoy's "The Hustle", which, if you're into that kind of thing, are marvels of cheese geing beautiful in spite, or becaus of, itse;g.
  11. Who's the GR Drummer from Dallas? Tommy Young is a fixture on the over-50 lounge circuit, a really wierd scene that I've also gotten my feet wet in. You play a mix of schlock pop, 60s R&B/R&R, a little blues, and a few standards for affluent silver-haired (mostly) divorced folks in various states of sobriety who are looking for a hookup. Imagaine us on the prowl when we were 22, and then imagine us doing the same thing once we've got grandkids, and you get the idea. Anyway, that's the only context I've heard Tommy Young in, but he always sounds like he's a player who's better than that. Eric Scortia I went to school w/at NTSU back in the day. Funny, back then he was all over the map in terms of organ styles. I remember palying a gig w/him back then where we covered Booker T, Charles Earland, and something from UNITY all on the first set. Today, he's more or less in the soul-jazz vein, and has a CD (or two?) out on his own. Marchel is definitely his go-to guy (and w/good reason!), but once in a while Marchel can't make it, and a few of those times he's called me to sub. Unfortunately, I've aways been already booked, which sucks, becasue I've never player in a true jazz organ group. R&B, yeah. Cats who lean on B-3 sythn patches all night, yeah. But never the real deal. I'm sad about that, as much as I love that stuff. Eric can play what he chooses to play very nicely. Red Young is a new name to me. I'll ask around, though. I know a lot of the vets in this town, but by no means all, especially considering how underground some of this stuff is in terms of gigs and stuff.
  12. Sent one this morning.
  13. A little Irish music goes a long way for me.

  24. Only those which they managed to raise. Billy was pretty a pretty tasty guitarist, if the few examples I've heard are any indication.
