Paul Bley Blindfold Test

Heard it, and like it well enough. I do wish the producers had paid more attention to the intonation differential between Golson's tenor and Henderson's Harmon-muted horn, though. Mixed it different, EQ-ed it different, done SOMETHING different. Open horns is one thing, but that Harmon sound REALLY cuts, and if the intonation between and another horn is too different (notice I didn't say "off" or "wrong"), then it's kinda....uh... "hard to ignore". In some types of music, that's part of the trip, but I don't think that Golson's brand of music is THAT kind of music. Otherwise, though, a perfectly acceptable and enjoyable program by a distinguished elder statesman whose playing continues to evolve in interesting ways.

I'd not rule out going to see a "trad" band if you can find a good one. That stuff has an infectious energy that might be best experienced live, at least for somebody who doesn't already like it. It ROCKS!

I wish it was as funny! Bley's a trip as both player and commentator (and author, too - his autobiography is a blast!) -
DUDE! When I was on the road, we took a trip into Chicago from somewhere, Birmingham, I think, and I had been travelling all night in a closed, air-conditioned van. We passed through Gary at about 7 am and decided to stop for breakfast. Well, the second I opened the door, I got a whiff of the air, and in less than 5 seconds (literally), I was having to fight back the urge to go vomitorious all over the parking lot. It was a MIGHTY struggle.... No wonder them Jacksons is all so freaky - they grew up breathing that shit!

non-jazz album covers in the BN style, BUT...
JSngry replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sorry for being obtuse. You never know what people have or haven't picked up yet, and I don't like to appear "condescending" (unless it's on purpose ) Anyway, there's a definite BN connection to the cover of THE BASEMENT TAPES! Cover photo and design by Reid Miles!!! After moving on from BN, Reid Miles became a very successful (and distinctive) commercial photographer. His trademark style was the opposite of his sparse BN style. "Crowded", often incongruous people and items jammed together to from a "real-time collage" became the order of the day, and THE BASEMENT TAPES cover is a classic example. I learned all this from the husband of a friend of my wife's, who was himself a commercial photographer. I asked him who his favorite photographers were, and the name Reid Miles came up. When I mentioned that Miles was legendary for his BN work, this guy said that he had never heard of Blue Note, nor of Miles' work for the label. When I showed him some classic examples, he was kinda freaked out at the difference! -

Don't know about an entire forum, but tell you what - we got so many edjumacated individuals from so many different fields here that considering the Organissimo Board as a potential "homework help resource" for flusterated parents is NOT a bad idea. Especially since it seems ike there's somebody here 24-7! -

Al, how do you get that 1:25? -
Geez, can't a man get a good night's sleep while he's on vacation? "S" - there are no records that I have by "Sonny Blount", and "Sun Ra" is more a "title" than it is a name. Like if I had any records by The Chambers Brothers, I'd file them under C insteadd of B. Same thing with Chairman of the Board - C.

Does everybody know what I mean, or do y'all just think I'm being silly here? -
Good point, and almost convincing (might be yet), except... Does anybody talk about the "Ali-Liston fight"? "Ali-Foreman", sure. But it's still "Clay-Liston" whenever I hear about it. I've always filed Brand/Ibrahim's work under whatever name the album was issued under (not unlike Clay's/Ali's fights), but I'm beginning to accumulate enough of his work that I'm not sure if I can remember which album came out under which name. Of course, the "if it's not here, it must be there" rule is too simple, and is totally ungeekworthy. I'll probably put them all under Ibrahim eventually, but a crisis of this geektitude deserves careful consideration, no?

I'll file them under Dewey Redman!

wait just a second there skeeter! the man said it shouldn't be a copy of a specific blue note lp. he didn't say it couldn't be on blue note! Ah, but the phrase "in the BN style" is not without implications. Is Ellington "in the Ellington style" or is he the Ellington style? Is it possible to be "in the style of" something when you already are that style by definition? This is tricky, and I'm still awaiting a decision from the judges. Where's Bill Cullen when you need him? -
Steve Allen, er... BUCK HAMMER, did one piano, three hands.
-
Ah yes, the band he formed after Reserve Clause broke up.

Thanks! Those fractions reduce down real nicely, too. Nice, easy answer. Probablility formulas went south for me a LONG time ago... -
Freshman Algebra (high school) What is the probability of drawing 3 spades out of a deck of cards without replacement? My daughter says the answer = (13/52)*(12/51)*(11/50)*(10/49) She gets an answer of some ungodly fraction. None of this "sits right" with what I remember of my various math classes. I say there's got to be an easier way, but darned if I can remember what it is. This ain't the kind of thing I do on a daily basis, doncha' know... As always, and especially this time, thanks in advance!

File under one (which?) or both?
-
What I've heard has been a copy w/o liners provided by a friend for "auditioning" purposes to see if I wanted to buy the real deal. I did. My "real" copy is on order and hasn't arrived yet. So here's what I hear: "Speedball" I'm sure that Lee's on, obviously, and I'm pretty sure he plays on that smoking title track as well. I think Hubert Laws is on there too (on piccolo, if my ears are working right, playing lots of mid-60s Trane-isms!), and he's on fire too, something that's always good to hear. Think I hear Lee on "Grab 'Hole A Dish" as well, but not for anything "significant".
-
Oh yeah, there's a previously unreleased alternate of "Speedball" on that Earland side, one with Billy & Lee Morgan. For those who are completists, you need to know that, right?
-
Let me put it this way - as far as the funky stuff goes, there's better examples of Earland doing it afaic. But for the straight-ahead stuff, it's as good as the similar type things on LEAVING THIS PLANET. And on one tune, the soloing styles of the latter get done over the grooves of the former, and that's a groove. All that I really care about is that Billy Harper sounds great on every cut that he's featured, period. That was the sale for me right there.

wish it was... ubu That's a cello. It goes deeper.
