Don't think it's Cooper. That guy you're talking about vaguely rembles Serge Chaloff, but his head ain't big enough, and I don't know that Chaloff played bass clarinet. Here's another shot from the same gig - Club Troubador, NYC, ca. 1947, with Georgie Auld standing up (and that's Red Rodney in both pix!) BTW, Club Troubadour was a club opened by Auld, so that's probably his house band, not Kenton's. Don't think that's Kenton @ the piano. Well, guess what? There's a photo of Chaloff as a member of Auld's band that I've heard is going to be used in the new Uptown Allan Eager set's booklet, and he's got the same doubles set up as in this picture. So that's definitely Serge Chaloff, big head or not.

Guess I don't get as repulsed by some of these 32 covers as sumyall do. Now THIS is a truly bad cover Talk about "camp appeal" and other such matters all you want to. The fact remains - look up "hideuos" in the dictionary, and you should see this cover.

Are you old enough to remember the early days of TV when the opening titles of a show were superimposed over some stock footage because it was easy, cheap, and nobody knew any better? That's what that cover reminds me of. Woulda made a GREAT show, eh?

Max owns BEEHIVE. He leased it to Columbia because of his relationship w/Bruce Lundvall. Same thing w/the Electra Musician PURE GENIUS. And if you're thinking what I'm thinking... As for the recording quality, it is indeed amature, but that never stopped me from listening to it or enjoying it immensely. You go with what you got, ya'know? I've heard, and enjoyed, far worse, that's for sure!

You know, if you magnify that Thad cover something like 1000X, you can see Ruth Lion walking down the street getting shot for the COOL STRUTTIN' cover. They were both shot on the same day at the same time. Only in New York! Now, who wants 5 free Larry Young Mosaics?

Yeah, it's a darn fine side. I got the old Inner City release of it. I dig Vass inparticular, lots of "snakey" (as in winding phraseology, not as in "snakecharmer") playing on his part. If you dig Hill at all, I think you'll be quite pleased with this one.

Jug did record "Didn't We", didn't he? I'm not laughing, not at all. A song is only as good (or as bad) as the player, and after hearing what Ammons (and Dewey Redman, for that matter...) did with "Alone Again, Naturally", I make no prejudgements, especially about Webb songs. There's some meat in those songs, decades of inane, half-baked/assed interpretations notwithstanding.

OTOH, years of playing those songs with unispired cover bands has made me appreciate just how critical the tracks were to the vocalist's successes. It's a two-way street, a recipie in which all ingredients are equally important (and let's not leave out songwriters and producers either!).
