damn good record
-
He's happy and it shows in his sound, his happy sound and his happy singing!
-
How old are you? Have you had your hearing tested lately? Serious question, high frequency hearing loss comes with age for a lot of us, and the results you describe are what that sounds like.
-
Oh, Weather Report was not just populist, the were freaking organic.
-
For some reason, my mind always gets those titles confused. This has been going on for years now.
-
The whole RTF thing was explicitly about "communicating", even the first iteration with flora. But when it get "electric", especially when it was DiMeola bringing the...whatever....that stuff largely sounded silly to me then, and it still does today.

STRONG!!!

So I'm thinking, uh-oh, this is going to be one of those alleged records where Quincy Jones takes credit for somebody else's writing, but no, full and proper credit is given right there in plain black and white where nay even semi-literate fool could read it if the wanted to. And the cover says "supervised by", not arranged by! And the liner notes say that he was "commissioned to produce" the record, and then give full credit to who did the actual writing! DESPICABLE!!!!!
-
And the thing is, he could have learned those same things from the earlier trios as well!

Reissue in UHQCD format. Features 24bit digital remastering in 2017. Comes with bonus track(s), lyrics, and a description written in Japanese. This series features the albums with the following product numbers: CDSOL-45501 through CDSOL-45530. *UHQCD (Ultimate High Quality CD) is an upgraded version of HQCD, a high fidelity CD format developed by Memory-Tech. This sounds like it could be ageneric description of whatever series this one's a part of?

Maybe he'll make a record of Schoenberg's music produced by Quincy Jones. You mean is it possible that they had no problem thinking of themselves as multi-faceted human beings who had no problem functioning as entertainers for a larger segment of society than being pigeon-holed as a "jazz" act would ever allow them to do? In other words, is it possible that they had no qualms about using their talents to become successful on a large scale enough that they could make money not just for everybody else, but for themselves and their family as well? I not only think it's possible, I think it's admirable.

LF- Chick Corea Complete Is Sessions
JSngry replied to Tom 1960's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think he was just too damn high sometimes. And thought that all he had to do was to be there. Jazz Hippie-ness. That Scientology shit got him outta that one! But seriously, he got better at free playing the more he got into it, and especially once there began to be some structural considerations going into the thought process, which kinda became a quantum consideration once they got Braxton on board. But this stuff, yeah, it's interesting, but sometimes there's just no "there" there, and, you know, it's your record and you just show up and then...it got better than this, a lot better than this. At it's best, it sounds like Chick's trying to catch up to where Miles' band had left off, before he got on the gig, but with not the right players for that concept (because, really, how many in the world were there then?). At it's worst, it sounds like nobody really knows where the fuck they're going, so...make noise and make energy until SOMETHING happens...that can be how free improvisation works, but ideally....no. Let me put it this way - my copy is not for sale, but I'll let my kids know that there's a market. They'll be delighted, or at least outwardly skeptical! -

It is...except when it's not, and then it's annoying as fuck! -
and that's a deficit or problem or whatever it is, why, exactly? I mean, geez, he's been doing music since he was literally a kid. He comes by this pop/R&B shit honestly. Unlike, say, somebody like Chick Corea who admitted that he didn't start listening to The Beatles until, like the 2000s. I was like dude, seriously? No wonder your "jazz rock" had no good rock in it! And I would still wager dinner (not lunch, mind you, dinner) that he's still at best radio-familiar with James Brown. You do this before you hit puberty, hey, why should you lose it? Just add to it. Dude was young (quite), handsome (quite), and always clean. Probably "became a man" sooner than most of us have our first t-bone. What part of that life and lifestyle suggest anything other than wanting more of the same? No part at all, maybe? As for his records (does he still make records?), he hasn't made them for me make them for me for decades now. and my feelings are not in the least hurt by that. He doesn't need my money, and I don't need those records. I don't see where there's any cause for upsetment in that.
-
Dude, Joe Farrell would play anything that paid. Anything. Why are you surprised at that?
-
I just played it again, and might give it one more spin. Talk to me, ok?
-
That was good, let's play it again.

Actually, more than a footnote. A key part of one of Jack McDuff's best bands, had a cult-fave band with Lonnie Smith, made some really nice records for A&M/CTI and then CTI itself, one of which was almost a breakthrough, then, of course, Breezin, which, sorry, is a really good record, no complaints here. And then of course, all that other stuff happened, but no more a footnote, than, as...any number of other people who had a lot of popular records. And many of them (looking at you, Ramsey Lewis) did not nearly the number of good records that Benson made, as leader or as sideman. I guess if Nat Cole's going to be a footnote, then, and only then, will also be George Benson. I get it, the guy took his money and went home. Good for him, his money, his choice. But before he made all that money, he was there, more than once, and more than a little. Of course, who is writing this "history" and where are the footnotes going to be?
