  1. Looks like I'll need to find a copy then! Thanks. Now playing, The Triffids
  2. Willie, I have most of those and a few more. Looks like the Blue Note & Prestige have been updated and released by Rittor Music. The Blue Note adds another 50 pages or so. Here's some photos (there's also a "Jazz Next Standard - Spiritual Jazz" book, but I can't find it now), And here's a page from the 'Independent Black Jazz of America' book - chosen randomly of course! Actually the Abdullah is the only 'About Time Records' entry and Nessa has 2 (the other is Roscoe Mitchell N-5). The book concentrates largely on Strata-East, Tribe, Nimbus, India Navigation, Black Jazz (label). The Hard Bop book is just a selection of, well, hard bop from USA, UK, Europe, Japan and a grand total of 3 from Australia! Obviously, these are not definitive and very subjective, but I still found a few good ones. The Fusion was helpful as I admit I wasn't a big fan to begin with. And there's also these 2 books, The "Rare Grooves" is not essential but enjoyable. A selection of apparently rare Jazz, Funk, Soul and Latin LPs. Looks very much geared towards the 'crate digger' fans. From what I can make out, the "rare" indicates vinyl availability? The cds seem easy enough to find, or at least they were.
  3. I enjoy that cd very much. Thanks for the documentary. Also prompted by Larry's post to play the Tatrai Qt. Bartok - String Quartets 4 & 5
  4. For anyone interested in downloads, 7digital offer this set in 24bit (that's a good thing right?) for about 15 bucks!! I normally prefer physical product but for that price have been enjoying it since it was released in early January. Another very inexpensive download was the Noseda Shostakovich 4 (thanks David, for mentioning it above). Speaking of download sites I've found out about many new releases there (even if I purchase a cd elsewhere). For example, Chandos offer product from other labels and are seemingly up to date with new releases. Not quite an all-in-one shop, but they do have the labels that I'm particularly interested in such as Alpha, Albany, Glossa, Naxos and so on. No harmonia mundi unfortunately and no majors such as DG (fortunately ). https://www.chandos.net/newreleases I also suscribe/visit the specific label/s that I'm interested in - harmonia mundi, Bridge Records, Eloquence Australia (archival releases only), etc. Problem with all these new releases is finding the time to listen!! A couple that I've enjoyed recently are the Mozart Vol.2 (Faust/Melkinov) on harmonia and Miklos Spanyi - Vol.39 of the C.P.E. Bach solo keyboard music (BIS)
  5. RIP Reinbert de Leeuw. I had no idea. It was a coincidence that I played the Messiaen last night, with the unfortunate cover sleeve! Now playing, Barbara Hannigan / Reinbert de Leeuw Lieder by Schoenberg/Webern/Berg/Zemlinsky/Alma Mahler & Hugo Wolf (alpha)
  6. CD2 - Messiaen: Sept Haïkai (Pierre Boulez, Orchestre du Domaine musical, Yvonne Loriod) CD3 - Boulez: Piano Sonata No.2 (Yvonne Loriod)
  7. oops, I forgot to add that the outer suburbs store is in Blackburn - don't know if it matters, but just in case. And they're still in business.
  8. John Surman - Tales of the Algonquin (Deram)
  9. Do Dutch Vinyl sell cds? I haven't gone there thinking they were vinyl only - I no longer buy vinyl. Well, I did bring home a few last year just because they were cheap and in excellent condition. I already had these on CD and so didn't, um, need them, but...
  10. sidewinder, your description reminds me of Licorice Pie Records, though they're relative latecomers (opened in 2002 or so). Here's a (not) definitive guide that mentions them with a photo of the shop front https://thevinylfactory.com/features/melbourne-best-record-shops-guide/ Used to frequent Greville Records (also in trendy Prahran) quite a lot, as well. I do miss the record stores of yesterday, both for the music and staff but can't say I care much for the newer, hip stores that have sprung up all over Melbourne. They remind me of how much I miss the real record stores. The outer suburban store you mentioned, could it have been Dixons? I do remember lots of rare goodies, both vinyl and cd, especially classic rock. I still go there occasionally. They had an excellent store at Camberwell, but that unfortunately closed down.
  11. The Ardittis were the first I heard and consequently perhaps, are still the recordings I listen to most I do enjoy the Pacifica Qt. very much though. Speaking of Arditti Quatet, Now playing, Schoenberg SQ 3 & 4
  12. Carter - Sonata / 90+ / Night Fantasies (Charles Rosen)
  13. Oh definitely a few headaches for me, especially with the original pronunciation! I've grown up with the 'modern' versions, so i translate as i read along. I'd love to see a production with original pronunciation some day.
  14. Just finished reading The Tempest from this new hernia inducing 'book'. It's a facsimile of Shakespeare's first folio (Norton). Definitely didn't need any more Shakespeare, but my wife knew I'd love it anyway and bought it for me for xmas!
