  1. Do note rule out the Basie Hep CDs which have received the magic touch of John R.T.Davies the world's number one in sound restoration. John Delaney
  2. The Pacific Jazz CD shared with Russ Freeman is the one to get if you can find it. He's on many of the Chet Baker Paris recordings; these are also fine. The New Artists CD has poor sound although interesting musically. John Delaney
  3. Some of these box sets are turning up on UK ebay. I'm wondering if the Fantasy / ZYX licensing contract is ending and they're being dumped on the market. Any ideas anyone? John Delaney
  4. Has the Lou Mecca 10" LP BLP5067 ever appeared on CD? John Delaney
  5. Nocturne, Volume 2. I was one of those involved in the BNBB posting about this. The only jazz stuff left is by Steve White and some ex Tops Earl Hines from 1954. The White stuff is not very good and I haven't, as far as I know, heard the Hines material but it includes Dickie Wells and Jerome Richardson. I think it's doubtful if we will see a volume 2 but if we do it could well be a single CD or, at most, a double. John Delaney
  6. Anyone interested in this period of history might want to find out more and I'll suggest two books. 'Hitler's Airwaves', by Bergmeier and Lotz, Yale University Press, 1997. ISBN 0300067097. Comes with a CD some of which is probably on the Proper Box set. 'Different Drummers', by Michael H.Kater, Oxford University Press, 1992. ISBN 0195050096. There's also a third, briefer, book by Mike Zwerin. Title escapes me at the moment but it's published by Quartet, London. John Delaney
  7. The Mingus discography by Lindenmaier and Salewski 'The Man Who Never Sleeps' doesn't mention this session. However, this discography is now twenty years old and probably more has come to light in the intervening years. The only recording mentioned of Newborn and Mingus together is the soundtrack music for 'Shadows'. Presumably the Cafe Bohemia date with McLean is from 18 August 1956. The discography has a note that it may be Ernie Henry on this date. Sorry that it's rather negative news. John Delaney
