  1. John Coltrane - The Impulse! Albums, Vol. 2
  2. I was just wondering what that really means. Does that mean that it can go bad in a few years with constant regular play or it can go bad in a few years regardless? Does it "go bad" from playing? If you only played it two or three times a year, wouldn't it conceivably last decades? I'm really curious about what the difference might be between a CD-R and a regular CD issue as far as longevity is concerned.
  3. From the look of the video it appears that he was just some guy busking on the sidewalk. (Albeit, a guy with some nice bass skills.)
  4. Check out this bass player, he's pretty awesome! I don't know how long this link is going to last so check him out while you can. Pretty cool. Bass player.
  5. Let us know your impressions when you've given it a fair listen.
  6. Do you want to hear the music contained within? If so, open it up and enjoy it! How else can you get this music unless you pay an outrageous price for it? I'd give them the benefit of a doubt and guess that the sound quality is OK. I can't even hear any appreciable difference between store-bought CDs and the ones I burn on my Dell desk-top. The product description noted that this was a CD-R product so Amazon is being up front. I'd like to hear from someone who has bought and listened to the disc. I'm betting it's just fine.
  7. 30% off all CDs/DVDs at Secondspin.com this weekend only using code "3NOV28" on checkout.
  8. I'm a bit past due in paying it forward but here's my offering to the first PM received: Bob Scobey's Frisco Band - Direct From San Francisco
  9. I almost forgot to mention one of my favorites: Mel Torme - Christmas Songs
  10. I enjoy Joe Williams' "That Holiday Feeling". and of course, Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas".
  11. Thanks to everyone for their feedback on the Jackie McLean titles. How could I resist so many people encouraging me to buy more jazz CDs? I ordered "Jacknife", "Right Now!" and threw in "It's Time!" for good measure. (and to get the free shipping) Amazon added an additional promotional discount so the discs ran $7.99 each delivered. Not too bad!
  12. Thanks for the friendly feedback. It's nice for helping weigh out whether I should spend limited jazz funds on 2-3 more Jackie Macs or whether the same money should be spent on something else. Like you said, the warning is a good wake up notice. I'd probably regret passing them up only to have them go out of print and become unavailable or only available at a severely inflated price. I'm really intrigued by the sample I heard of "Poor Eric" on "Right Now". I know it was written for Eric Dolphy's untimely death. The sound is so sad and mournful that it appears to be a very heartfelt performance.
  13. Because I already have 14 Jackie McLean CDs and wanted to solicit opinions on whether these two were compelling enough to make it 16. I'm an unapologetic fan of the "Spanish/Andorran" reissues but who can predict what they are going to reissue? They represent some truly fantastic music in my collection, most of which, is not available elsewhere.
  14. Neither of these have made my collection yet so now is probably the time if at all. I'm a Jackie fan, should I be without either of these?
  15. John Coltrane - The Impulse! Albums, Vol. 2 (5-CD) Just a little birthday treat and only $20.00!
  16. I got it and I love it. I had no Jackie McLean at the time so I was able to pick up 12 (if I recall correctly) CDs worth of releases in one fell swoop. I think the sound is great and it has a nice booklet with all of the individual cover art shown within. I'd recommend it without reservation.
  17. "Mosaic selects" should get you all the selects. For the big boxes you'll have to search for the ones you are interested in individually and hope that the one(s) you want is on sale.
  18. I have no Alexander albums, but very much like what I've heard of him on the radio. Which is regarded as the best album? My current collection consists of: Prime Time: In Concert / Nightlife In Tokyo / The Second Milestone Man With A Horn / Full Range I haven't received "Full Range" yet so I can't really judge that one yet. Of the four I have right now, I'd say that "Prime Time: In Concert" is my current favorite. This CD also comes with a concert DVD which I have yet to watch. (I just picked this one up last week.) All five titles are rated 4 stars or more (out of 5) by allmusicguide.com if your rankings tend to run similar to theirs. I like them all and consider them all strong and recommended recordings.
  19. thanks for bringing this one to my attention, hadn't noticed it was available. Found a bargain copy straight away. on the player now, nice stuff! You're welcome. It's, probably not essential but it's still nice stuff! Kynard's debut was the biggest draw for me. I was kind of ambivalent on the first listen but warmed up to it quite a bit more on the second listen.
  20. I love Bobby Hackett and purchased the set before I found a significant source of sound samples for all/most of the set. The sound samples not only didn't do it for me, they filled me with an immediate sense of regret. I ended up trading it to Mosaic with the balance of cash to pick up the Farmer/Golson Jazztet which turned out to be an awesome move.
  21. I, for one, LOVE the reboot and think it is exactly what the Bond series needed. Daniel Craig is arguably the best Bond ever and makes the likes of Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan look like butlers. All of the weird gadgetry, the women with the bizarre names the world domination-geared villains and the obligatory little quips had me rolling my eyes and are what turned me off to the series. The franchise became a cheap parody of itself as the years went by and the reboot is a much needed change for the good.
  22. Despite good intentions to cut back on CD buying, it's really hard when merchants like Borders and Half-Price Books are offering coupons ranging from 20% to 50% off. I couldn't resist making the following buys: Eric Alexander - Prime Time: In Concert (CD/DVD) / Full Range I have only 3 Eric Alexander CDs in my collection and enjoy them all so he's more than worthy of a broader representation in my collection. Buck Clayton-Earl Hines All-Stars - Jazz From A Swinging Era (2-CD) Recorded in Paris in 1967. Also featuring Roy Eldridge, Vic Dickenson, Budd Johnson, Bud Freeman, Earle Warren, Sir Charles Thompson, Oliver Jackson, Bill Pemberton. Sonny Stitt - My Mother's Eyes I'm taking a chance on this one. Stitt and Charles Kynard seem like an interesting combo. There's also some bonus tracks with Don Patterson on organ. Various artists - Stompin' Singers & Western Swingers: More from the Golden Age of Western Swing (4-CD) Half-Price Books had several Proper box sets for sale and this was one that still had the CDs in jewel boxes. I have and very much enjoy their other western swing box set and have little doubt I'll very much enjoy this one as well.
  23. I'm glad I checked the date of the coupon. I happened to be driving by a store, stopped in and found a CD I was interested in but didn't have the coupon with me. I figured I'd stop in tomorrow while running errands. When I saw the coupon expired today I had to make a special trip. My buy with the 40% off coupon: Eric Alexander - Prime Time: In Concert (1 CD / 1 DVD) Eric Alexander - tenor sax David Hazeltine - piano John Webber - bass Joe Farnsworth - drums
  24. I'd take advantage myself but the Mosaics I don't already have are more a "like/nice to have" vs. "gotta have". Still, there are some great savings there if you're already in the market for them.
  25. Anyone biting?
