  1. I see that it's now moved from "in stock, ships w/i 1-2 days" to "backordered, ships in 1-2 weeks".
  2. I really enjoyed the movie but what was the deal between Uhura and Spock? That didn't ring true for me at all and where the heck did that come from? I didn't see it built up or developed as a story thread and unless I'm mistaken, there was no precedent or mention of a relationship or "thing" between the characters from the original series. Was this whole deal a creation of the writers, perhaps to show Spock succumbing to his human side? I can't say that I'd blame him but this little twist didn't work for me.
  3. I picked up the Buddy Rich Mosaic on a lark because there happened to be a seller on Half.com selling new/sealed copies of the Universal set for only around $65.00 so I couldn't pass it up. I wasn't particularly interested in Buddy Rich nor was I in the market for this set at the time but I picked it up based on the fact that it was a Mosaic and it was new/cheap. At the very least, I figured if I didn't like it, I could easily sell it for what I paid for it if not more. I was very pleasantly surprised by the set and ended up enjoying it much more than I ever expected. This box set swings with a capital "S". I was a bit wary because I'm not a fan of drum solos. I haven't listened to it in a while but from what I can recall, there are less than a handful of drum solos that reached the point of becoming an irritant which in the total scope of the entire set, is a very small irritant. It's certainly not something that would stop me from buying the set if I were interested in it and this is coming from someone who prefers that there never be an extended drum solo in a number. For the most part, I became more and more able to appreciate Rich's incredible drumming skills during his solos. I'd agree with your assessment that this one is a sleeper in terms of what I've seen as far as lack of buzz and discussion are concerned. I'd definitely recommend it. Don't let that Mobley set get away from you.
  4. I see that Bev Getz has off-handedly commented on a couple of Stan's recordings. If she were willing to indulge us, I'd be curious to know what she thought her favorite 5 (or 10?) Stan Getz recordings are and any thoughts or experiences she might be willing to share on each. I currently have 29 discs worth of Getz and even though I've started limiting my new CD purchases to artists I don't yet have or those I have little of, Getz is one artist I wouldn't close the door on yet.
  5. I have 20 of the big boxes and 5 selects. There really isn't a lot out there available or out-of-pint that I'd really be itching for vs. "would be nice to have". There would have been many more but by chance, I ran into someone who was willing to trade copies of OOP sets (apologies to those who are offended by such practices) so that filled a lot of titles that would have been on my wish list. Having said that I'd like to have: 1. Elvin Jones 2. Dizzy Gillespie 3. Randy Weston Select 4. Gerry Mulligan Concert Band
  6. Coleman Hawkins - The Bebop Years I've reconsidered my heretofore avoidance of Coleman Hawkins and decided to give this a try. Any thoughts on this set?
  7. It's nice to see kids learning this stuff and keeping it alive. He did a fine job too. Handful Of Keys - click here
  8. For those of you who may be interested:
  9. Not a CD but a DVD on the making of a great jazzy/jazz influenced album, Steely Dan's "Aja".
  10. I don't know that it haunts me but of the Mosaics I missed that I would be most interested in having/hearing: Elvin Jones
  11. Just because. "Take Five" on a bamboo flute.
  12. Ruth Brown - Ruth Brown - Miss Rhythm (Greatest Hits and More) [2-CD] Timeless Donald Byrd
  13. I really enjoyed the first four seasons and own them on DVD. From the fifth season on, the show really started circling the drain. (to borrow a phrase) All too often after that, I found too many of the shows to be pretty lame or weak if not outright unwatchable. I'll enjoy my first four seasons and pretend the rest didn't happen.
  14. A variety of stuff: Frank Sinatra Songs For Swingin' Lovers Come Dance With Me! Filling in some gaps from his classic period: Elton John Elton John Caribou The Delmore Brothers - Classic Cuts, Vol. 2: The Later Years 1933-52 (4-CD)
  15. My guess is that the seller had the item listed on more than one web site and it sold on one of the other web sites. After it sold the seller probably forgot to remove the listing (or didn't get time to) and was reminded of that once you tried to purchase the already sold item. I sheepishly admit that I've been guilty of that once or twice over the years and I really felt bad about it and was very apologetic. As far as Half.com knew, I still had the item available for sale. I'm guessing the same thing happened here.
  16. I'm glad to hear that there was nothing to worry about in the end but I can totally relate to your experience. If there was ever a fire, my jazz/CD collection would be my primary concern as far as possessions go because it brings me so much pure enjoyment. Would the replacement cost for a CD collection be covered under homeowners insurance? At what point would you need a special rider of some sort? Just my jazz collection alone is about 800 titles. (That's probably moderate compared to some of the collections here.) Even if you figured an average $10 replacement cost for each title that would be $8000.00 and we wouldn't even be taking into account pricier OOP titles and box sets. If you were to take all of my CDs into account, we're easily looking at $10,000.00 or more in replacement costs. Yikes!!
  17. I've already run through all of the jazz I'm interested in via BMG so in its dying days I picked up: You Ain't Talkin' to Me: Charlie Poole and the Roots of Country Music [3-CD] Tennessee Ernie Ford - Masters 1949-1976 [3-CD]
  18. A couple of box sets I hope BMG will deliver before they close shop. They've had so many things "temporarily out of stock" (I have one order TOOS for 30+ days) I'm concerned that when they close, they'll cancel all the TOOS orders. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. I've pretty much run through their jazz offerings so I ordered: King Of The Road: The Genius Of Roger Miller [3-CD] The Essential Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys (2-CD)
  19. With a 50% off coupon, new/sealed from Half-Price Books: Charlie Ventura - Bop For The People (4-CD)
  20. I should give this another listen. Today, bought Sonny Meets Hawk! on CD. I think it's an excellent disc. It makes me want to pick up "Ramblin'" which also features Roy Ayers. I was saying in another thread that I'm surprised that Wilson didn't have a bigger following because I think he was worthy of one.
  21. Art Pepper - The Complete Village Vanguard Sessions
  22. I love going to Half-Price Books to search through their jazz selection. It's very random and definitely hit-or-miss but I've picked up some real gems there for some very nice prices. The unpredictability of their ever-changing inventory makes finding something you like that much more rewarding and exciting. On occasion if I'm in the area, I'll go to Cheapo Records to check out their huge jazz section. Unfortunately, they aren't as cheapo as I wish they were and 9 times out of 10 I can probably get an item cheaper via the internet even with shipping. My last 3-4 trips there were for empty jewel cases because they have the best price in town on them.
  23. In today's mail: Jack Wilson - Something Personal
  24. I placed orders for 2 box sets a day or two apart and just received both. The Art Pepper box was mint and looked brand new but had a used sticker on it and a sticker over the blacked-out/cut bar code. The other box set was Willie Nelson's "Complete Ghost". It too was marked with a used sticker but the three discs in the heavy cardoard sleeve are all still shrink-wrapped with those annoying disc ID stickers along the top edge so it was actually a brand new set. The bar code wasn't even blacked out when I removed the store sticker.
