Art Pepper-the Complete Galaxy Recordings
mikelz777 replied to jazzkrow's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I got a brand-new, still-sealed copy for around $112.00 delivered quite some time ago. (Very well worth it!) I was searching for the set and bored with time on my hands so I did a Google search on "Complete Galaxy Recordings" and checked out each suggested link. At 10+ pages in I discovered some obscure liquidator who was selling 3 or 4 copies. I took a shot on it and they came through. -
Obscure movies that you remember from your youth
mikelz777 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was 9 or 10 years old when I saw "Ring Of Bright Water" in the theater. (1969) It's basically a story of a man who adopts two otters and how it changes his life. I remember how charming and joyful the otters were and how fun it was to watch them play and get into mischef. All was moving along greatly as I was carried away by this feel-good movie when suddenly and unexpectantly, I was devasted, horrified and shocked by the tragedy at the ending. I lost a bit of my innocence viewing that Saturday matinee and that memory is still very clear to me to this day. -
Unless they use the same definition of life that abortion supporters (Or should I say, "pro-choicers"?) use to salve their consciouses that they are not committing murder. Ironic huh? The definition conveniently changes depending on the want or need. Interesting report. There seem to be a lot of qualifiers in there.

Are the AAJ forums down for others as well? I haven't been able to get in for the last 2 days.

My 2 cents; keep and enjoy the Pepper you already have and spend that same money on some jazz you don't have yet.

Growing up, I remember being exposed to a wide variety of music. Through my parents it would have been stuff like polka, the Lawrence Welk Show, The Harmonicats, The Everly Brothers, etc. Through my older brother, 10 years my senior, I heard stuff like Elvis, The Beatles, Steppenwolf... The first jazz I recall hearing was Vince Guaraldi. I was never conscious of it as jazz, it was just the music I liked from the Charlie Brown cartoons. I seemed to be attracted to instrumental music fairly early on and recall buying 45's of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass before I even hit my teens. For years, until I was in high school, I would have been primarily into pop/rock music. I recall being into the group Chicago and always enjoyed "singing" the horn parts rather than the lyrics. In high school I hung around with a bunch of guys in marching/performance band. Through them I started inching into jazz a bit and got into stuff like Maynard Ferguson, The Crusaders and Tower Of Power. College years was still primarily pop/rock but I got into some pop-oriented jazz like Grover Washington, Bob James, Chuck Mangione and Spyro Gyra. The 15 years or so after college I listened to very little or no jazz of any kind. The spark that sent me on a serious pathway into the world of jazz was during one Christmas season listening to Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas. I started thinking about how much I enjoyed that jazz trio which inspired me to start searching for other trios. That search eventually lead me to Oscar Peterson. In looking for more Oscar Peterson CDs, I discovered Lester Young (with the OP trio) and instantly fell in love with his sound. After hearing Prez the first time I said to myself, "THATS the sound I'm looking for!!". That lead me from trios to quartets and looking for more of that kind of tenor sound. My love of Prez lead me to Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Scott Hamilton. Logical progression lead me to more and more artists and the rest is history. In the last decade or so I've amassed around 700 different jazz titles in my collection. Jazz probably makes up 95% or more of my listening time when I'm able to listen to music. If it's not jazz it's probably going to be classical, blues, country, bluegrass or traditional roots type music.

I was (and still am) a big WH fan. He was one of the first guys I checked out, and I played in a group in high school that played a bunch of Crusaders tunes. Wayne was a big time disciple of JJ (as most trombonists are) and had that big, fat sound that drew me in. I still listen to the Crusaders now and then. WH is a soulful MF! Before I got into jazz I never thought of the trombone as anything other than just a marching band instrument. The (Jazz) Crusaders were one of my gateways into jazz and Wayne Henderson was the first person to show me that the trombone could be a solo instrument. I loved him then and I still love his Crusaders stuff now.

How much duplicate material in your music collection?
mikelz777 replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have a handful of duplicates at most. They would have come about either by my buying a box set that had a CD I already owned or by my enjoying a compilation so much that I pursued the individual recordings. I know there are a fair amount of people here who feel differently but I think it would be a colossal waste to buy something I already had. I've never found alternate takes and bonus cuts to be compelling enough to buy a duplicate but will go for them if I'm buying for the first time. A lot of people talk about sound differences but for me, the difference in sound would have to be night and day rather than day and later that same day and even then, it would have to be a recording I really loved. I have so few duplicates that it doesn't really bother me but I'll want to sell or trade them somewhere down the line. This thread sounds like it could be the basis for a trading post. People could list their dups here and look for a buyer or trader. Addendum: It's fairly routine stuff but hey, if anyone is interested : John Coltrane - Gentle Side Of John Coltrane Art Blakey/Jazz Messengers - Like Someone In Love Bill Evans - Portrait In Jazz Art Pepper - Winter Moon -

What's your favorite Stanley Turrentine session?
mikelz777 replied to bluesbro's topic in Recommendations
That's Where It's At This one would be somewhere near the top. Mr. T and Les McCann made an excellent pair. Up At Minton's Another very strong consideration with Grant Green and Horace Parlan. Parlan and Mr. T were another excellent pair and all their recordings together are well worth checking out.
