My Morgan/Shorter Mosaic Box arrived this afternoon! In order to share my happiness with others on this board, I have decided to sell some of the ephemeral material which so many of you seem to collect and cherish. Therefore I am offering the follwing: 1. A slightly damaged cardboard shipping container. (In my eagerness to get to my treasure, I accidently tore one corner of the carton). In order to compensate for the damage I am including the bubble wrap as a free gift with the purchase of this album. Price $6.50. 2. The YELLOW invoice copy. Type is clear, and contains a special notation regarding the future arrival of my Tal Farlow order, and A MESSAGE TELLING ME TO "ENJOY THE MUSIC". This rare message greatly enhances the value of this invoice. (The credit card number is xxxxx-out). A once in a lifetime chance to own this one-of-a-kind invoice. Price $11.95. 3. The PINK invoice, same as #2 above, but the second copy. Type is not as clear, but very legible, and the special message about "enjoying the music" is there as well. The price information has been blanked out, however. A good second copy for the beginning invoice collector. Price $6.95. 4. The enclosed Mosaic catalog. Brochure 52, January 2004. In mint condition, never have been opened. Note this copy is extremely valuable because it contains no mailing information on the cover, making it pristine. Price $7.95 5. A I-sheet flyer detailing "discontinued items from True Blue while supplies last." Clear print, and contains extremely valuable information about bargains available. Price $5.95. Don't miss out on these great bargains! These items will surely not last too long, so act swiftly... Garth. Houston.

When THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS was first released in Cape Town in 1957, I went to see it four times the first week! I was madly into the Chico Hamilton Quintet, and also acting at the time ... and this was MY movie ... for years I talked it up, and very few remembered it, but in the last decade the film has now become a recognized classic. Interesting that Alexander MacKendrick, the director was a Scotsman (although actually born in the U.S.), with no real background in any of this culture, having previously made great British comedies like "Whiskey Galore" and "The Lady Killers." ... Like another British director, John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, 1969) he somehow was able to catch the gritty side of New York life. (They kept the streets wet most of the time). Ernst Lehman, one of the script writers, together with Clifford Odets, once pointed out about "Sweet Smell" that "no one talked like this, but everyone wished they did." You may recall that one of the characters in Barry Levinson's movie "Diner" keeps sprouting off whole sections of the great dialogue from "Sweet Smell." Levinson has acknowledged his homage to this film .. One interesting stylistic aspect of the film .. people are always entering and exiting rooms, clubs, and cars in a formal, stagelike way .... every entry has a corresponding exit .. Need I say, most of my students find it very difficult to relate to the mise en scene of this particular period in American history, when newspaper columnists had that kind of power. But I persist in showing this film, hoping that my own enthusiasm will somehow rub off ... I sometimes feel like the Richard Kiley character in "Blackboard Jungle" trying to get those juvenile delinquents to understand Stan Kenton! -
I should have done this earlier, but I finally checked the Andorran copyright agreement for myself this morning. It appears (and my one year at law school does not equip me to make a definitive judgement) that Andorra does subscribe to the "fifty year" period like other EU countries. Perhaps the legal eagles amongst us can give a clearer picture from this document. Of course, this just adds to the mystery of how Lonehill can release this seemingly illegal material .. may be they legally licensed it .. simple as that!

Well, what would YOU wear while trolling along these mountains? The pictures make it look like a very large Disneyland, with a jazz CD factory ... and the fact that the photo captions are in Russian makes me doubly suspicious...
-
Would it have to be "degrading"? I would appreciate the hell out of her ..... and I will pass your request on to the Andorrans.. cunning little mountain trolls that they are ... I have this image of the Andorran CD factory.. something like Santa's Workshop .. all these little guys running around in lederhosen ... pressing jazz CDs ..... with "Sidewinder" playing on the sound system ... Sheesh! I may not sleep myself tonight ..

Like Jazzbo, I too am a very big fan of Nellie Lutcher.. and so was my mother .. that is where I first heard her music. She is close to being the female equivalent of Fats Waller.. and she plays a very mean piano. Her music is incredibly "infectious" and whenever I put on some Nellie Lutcher I can't help but wanna shake the ol' body. Which reminds me, now that I no longer own any vinyl, I need to get a few Lutcher CDs..

Not sure if the 50 year limit applies (legally or morally) to items that were bootlegs in the first place. Ain't that a bitch... The Chester stuff I knew about, but not so the Birdland. Now I'm confused... One of my fellow posters on the West Coast list, in a thread on Lonehill, pointed out that Andorra is NOT a part of the EU; and that they have their own 25 year copyright rule! I am not sure of the accuracy of this observation, but it would certainly answer your questions, AND raise a whole new potential list of possible reissues from that tiny mountain community. Now what would a 25 year limit make possible that we are all salivating for...?

DON'T GET ME STARTED .... Brownie gave a great list, and he beat me to it .. but search out the work of John Alton in all those 'B' noirs ... classic use of the b/w camera to evoke mood ... -
Anyone who likes the "Tristano School" as much as I do can't be all bad.. so HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM THE BOYS LARRY!
-
Is anyone looking??? No one.. ? Then, O.K. I have always liked those lightweight west coast albums by pianist Paul Smith on Capitol Records ... "Liquid Sounds" etc. Tell nobody!
-
Brownie ... I am pleased that you have "rediscovered" the music of John Laporta. Like some other musicians we discussed on another thread recently, he is one of those wonderful musicians from the adventurous decade of the fifties whose music was a little ahead of its time. Now through the miracle of "low cost" reissues, an entire new appreciative audience is being created for this unjustly neglected music. In recent years LaPorta continued to make records and release them on his own private label. A fellow member of the West Coas list sent me this note this morning..... it has useful information. "I have written an appreciation of La Porta's career with a long discography. As it runs close to 2000 words it is too long to post here - if this is of interest, I suggest you go to www.upstairsjazz.com then "music" and then "Len's Den". Also, this site of Matt Snyder's is very useful ... http://users.bestweb.net/~msnyder/clarinet/laporta.htm JOHN LAPORTA, R.I.P.

Thank you Brad. Yes.. Couw helped me solve my problem by simply suggesting that I clean up my cache, as did b3-er. He was also kind enough to give Buddy the groove he so well deserves ... He also resisted the temptation to have Buddy fall off his precarious position on that chair.. It is interesting that that picture was taken in the early 1950s; except for his hair being grayer, Buddy still looks much the same ... shades of Dorian Gray!
-
All is solved .... Well, it is now a gif! Thanks to Couw for a great swinging version of Buddy ... What a list this is ... Now .... I have this strange sound coming out of my refrigerator, and my toaster .... aaaah! forget it .... I am now a happy cat .....
-
Thanks again .. but what avatar are you seeing? I am still getting that some dumb one of the Swedes circa 1961.... it should be DeFranco.. I am sure that you have better things to do ...
-
Thanks Couw.. but DUMB QUESTION #547.... How do I reset the size of the avatar ... ? On my scan, or is there some setting on this board? I am at least pleased to see that my new avatar is showing up in some form ... that was not what I originally wanted to use, but I tried various other scans I had on my destop ... However, I do not see the new scan, the original (now narrowed) is still showing up on my screen.... weird!
-
Try as I might, I cannot seem to get my current avatar to go away. I can get rid of it by using the remove avatar command, but when I try to load a new one, the old one reappears. The new one I am trying to upload is 32K and well within the parameters allowed. I can upload one of the avatars from the bank offered by the list, but not my own. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong? .. I know it is me ...

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
garthsj replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I must be crazy ... or you folks make me crazy with your countdowns! ... I just pulled the trigger on the Morgan-Shorter set, although I have had about 300 variations of these sessions on a wide variety of issues over the years ... I was impressed enough with the quality of the Kelly-Morgan set to get this one as well. I also pre-ordered the Farlow .. anyone want to buy a bunch of Farlow CD's .. including some Japanese pressings? I notice other folks on this list dumping their CDs in anticipation ... I do hope that they will produce those wonderful DSM covers in the booklet ... like they do with the Selects. -
Thanks Aggie .... I teach a course on propaganda, and I have used that poster in a slide collection I have on "Hollywood Goes To War" .. it always gets a laugh from my students here at UH! Have you ever seen this film? It is a hoot.. and notice the listing of a young "Bob Mitchum"... soon to become ROBERT Mitchum in "The Story of G.I. Joe" ... and on to fame..
-
Now why does this remind me of a shot from "Triumph of the Will"?

When venting doesn't help, and I need to have some serious payback .... I turn to SAM ... THE ATTACK SCHNAUZER .... he never fails me ...

The reason I am still single is that I am afraid that some woman in my life would invoke the old clothes rule in terms of my CD collection ... "If you haven't listened to it in the last year, then OUT it goes.." -

...and what's so funny about aardvarks? -
I think that is an improvement! I never said that I cannot pop my gum.. I just do not like others to do it around me... professor's privilege!
-
My students know that the sound of any one of them "snapping" gum in my class either while I am lecturing, or showing a film, will put them into instant physical jeopardy. I am not sure why that particular sound gets to me .. standing in line with others while they are doing it tries my patience to the nth degree .... I have to restrain myself from verbally attacking seemingly innocent strangers... but that persistent "pop!" "pop!" "pop!" drives me nuts ....
