  1. If you can fin a thread in which I categorically dismiss a genre as "drivel," please post a link. Of course, strictly speaking, film music is an application and not a genre. Henry Mancini wrote about opening doors for Quincy Jones. There was an assumption at the time that black composers should score "black" films. They were reluctant to have him compose for strings, for example. At any rate, Duke did Anatomy of a Murder, and Count Basie wrote the theme to M Squad, so things were starting to change.
  2. It's a great big InterWebz. You are cordially invited to participate in the threads that interest you, and to ignore the threads that don't interest you, like this one, obviously.
  3. So his marine experience killed him instead of helping him survive?
  4. These kinds of distinctions are not as cut and dried as some may believe. If you believe that film music can't be "art," I would suggest that you spend some time with Jerry Goldsmith's Chinatown score. Well, there's that...
  5. I dunno. After around 50 years, TV finally came into its own in the post-Sopranos era. TV is in a good position to help jazz, and as we all agree, jazz in 2022 needs all the help it can get.
  6. Jazz already is TV. TV Action Jazz! is not only the greatest album title of all-time, but it is also in the running for the greatest LP of all time, trailing only slightly behind Jazz Heat, Bongo Beat. Mingus may have lived much longer if he had a steady day gig and health insurance. Then again, that didn't work for Oliver Nelson, did it?
  7. Great question, and I don't know!
  8. The slow part of "Song with Orange" could be used for the protagonist in more introspective scenes. The mid-tempo part could portray him in action.
  9. Any 1960s Yakuza soundtracks?
  10. Don't know. But it would be really interesting if a contemporary composer with jazz chops arranged these Mingus compositions for a gumshoe film or TV show. You could even get away with Mingus's actual recordings if you edited them.
  11. It may be a little late for that, but then again, with AI and CGI, they will probably be able to do this in a few years!
  12. I envision an alternate universe in which Mingus is lured to Hollywood in the late 1950s and is hired to score a crime/private eye drama. Imagine this as theme to M-Squad. This track could be great for chase scenes: This would be great for establishing shots of the concrete jungle. The passage beginning at around 1:10 would be great for a club scene with an exotic dancer. And this could work as a recurring theme for the private eye's love interest, especially if they have a complex relationship.
  13. I prefer my Travis Bickle action figure.
  14. Kind of like the What's My Line shows with Wally Cox. He did only two. He was terrible.
  15. Here is the Mancini episode: https://www.npr.org/2015/04/17/400361715/henry-mancini-on-piano-jazz
  16. I'm waiting for the jheri curl version, because that is when he made his best music.
  17. Don't know Michael Franks. I was picking up on Mose Allison.
  18. That B sus 9 chord before the Bb minor 7!
  19. My brother has this book! This track is killer: So is this one:
  20. Several years back I stumbled upon a link to the Henry Mancini show. It was fantastic.
  21. Listening now to "Feel Your Groove" from 1971. Totally digging every track.
  22. And improving the melodies! I can never again hear the Beatles' "And I Love Her" because it lacks those extra three notes that Gary added to the end of the second phrase!
  23. I don't disagree with what you wrote. Please note that my words you quoted were written in response to: "It feels like stuff gets released, people get excited by it, and then it just gets forgotten." If jazz from more recent decades does not have the staying power of jazz from older decades - within the jazz community - there may be a larger issue. I am not being critical of the artists themselves.
