  1. Do you have a favorite version? I have a digital recording conducted by Simon Rattle in which the dynamic range is so extreme, the quiet passages disappear. I am listening to the RCA (analog) LP by the BSO, but it is combined with the Third Symphony, and as a result, some groove-cramming is going on. What's a great version, preferably from the LP (analog) era?
  2. Sounds like it might be the same guy. The Phil Moore I know was a pianist and arranger. Is it from the 1950s or 60s? NP: Prokofieff: 3rd Symphony & the Scythian Suite - Leinsdorf & the BSO - RCA (stereo)
  3. Is that the same Phil Moore who was making records in the 1950s, including the amazing Portrait of Leda?
  4. Agreed, but other passages are really beautiful, and I hear some colors more clearly in places than in other versions. Now playing: Berg, Shoenberg, Webern - Ormandy & Philadelphia Orch - Columbia (mono) A 12-tone extravaganza, featuring a 33-minute suite from Lulu!
  5. Various - Exotic Nights - Andre Kostelanetz (Columbia, stereo) Exotic symphonic pieces by Guarnieri, Hohvaness, Mussorgsky, Miyagi, Albeniz, and Gottschalk- Shanet.
  6. Debussy: La Mer, Iberia - Paul Paray & Detroit Symphony - Mercury Living Presence (stereo) A nice performance and a gorgeous recording, but Paray takes some passages of La Mer faster than I've heard them elsewhere.
  7. I had no idea they played with Dave Brubeck!
  8. What?!? This is the EPITOME of a cocktail jazz album, and I have often spun it while enjoying Shrunken Skulls or Ancient Mariners. Are you part of the Ladies' Temperance League?
  9. I stopped reading when the author referred to "Poinciana" as a "bland old standard." It is an exotica classic. This is what happens when out-of-touch people are hired to cover the arts.
  10. I LIVE for record covers like this.
  11. Are you going to see Isabella Rossalini sing at the Slow Club?
  12. The Eddie Lockjaw Davis Cookbook, Vol. 2 - Prestige (stereo) Tadd Dameron - The Magic Touch - Riverside (stereo, OJC reissue). Does anyone know when this album is from? My copy doesn't have any dates. I assume very late 1950s or very early 1960s.
  13. The Eddie Lockjaw Davis Cookbook, Vol. 1 - Prestige (stereo)
  14. What became of Sun Ra's written scores?
  15. Had family over yesterday for dinner and cocktails. Here is what was played: The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1 - Blue Note (rechanneled stereo) Clare Fischer - So Danco Samba - World Pacific (mono) Piano of Joao Donato - RCA (stereo) Cal Tjader - Live and Direct - Fantasy (mono, red vinyl) The Bossa Tres - Audio Fidelity (stereo reissue) Various - Jazz Tempo, Latin Accents - Audio Fidelity (stereo) Gabor Szabo - Jazz Raga - impuse! (stereo) Ramsey Lewis' Newly Recorded All-Time Non-Stop Golden HIts - Columbia (stereo), featuring an AMAZING version of "Slippin' Into Darkness." I also played the Duke Ellington record that my Dad wrote and told the story of how it came to be recorded. This morning: Manfredo Fest - After Hours - Daybreak (stereo)
  16. Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri - El Sonido Nuevo - Verve (mono) Featuring the theme from MODESTY BLAISE!!!!!
  17. I was incorrect about the Sabu album in my previous post. I just played it. It is a separate session, but also one that was released under multiple titles by multiple artists.
  18. John Dankworth - The $1 Million Collection - Fontana (stereo) These 1960s Dankworth albums typify space-age bachelor pad music, for me at least.
  19. Elmer Bernstein - Toccata for Toy Trains - Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection Records (not the best name for a record label, IMO, stereo) This is the score to the film by Charles and Ray Eames.
  20. Paul Desmond (with Jim Hall) - Bossa Antigua - RCA (70s Japan release with yellow/orange label, stereo) I sometimes wonder if it had been Desmond/Gilberto instead of Getz/Gilberto how that album would have turned out.
  21. Luiz Bonfa - Jacaranda - Ranwood (stereo)
  22. Les Baxter - Tamboo - Capitol (Duophonic) The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - Capitol (Duophonic) I don't care what the snobs say, Duophonic sounds killer on my system in this room!
  23. Axel Stordahl - Jasmine and Jade - Dot (mono)
  24. The Out Islanders - Polynesian Fantasy - Capitol (mono)
  25. Mongo Santamaria - Yambu - Fantasy (OJC reissue, stereo)
