  1. Cyril Jackson - Afro Drums - Request (stereo)
  2. Ahmad Jamal Trio - Epic (LN 3212, mono)
  3. Thanks. I just scored a copy of 3212, the one with the blonde on the cover. I was assuming this would be piano-bass-drums. Nice to hear it is a piano-guitar-bass. Love the percussive effects with the guitar!
  4. What's the story with the Ahmad Jamal Trio LP on Epic? Did this predate the Argo period? How many albums were there on Epic?
  5. I picked up a double Charlie Parker LP on Columbia, and the sound could politely be described as "archival." I couldn't get through one side of the LP, as the tone of the alto was like a dentist's drill. So I take off the LP, try to put it back in the sleeve, and I notice something was getting in the way. I pull out this crazy collage that has a combination of cutout images from 70s German porn mags and part of a Playboy article on EST, which, as you may remember, was a 70s self-help program with elements of a religious cult. I felt that this was a perfect encapsulation of jazz's audience in the 1970s. I imagine the previous owner playing Fender bass with Maynard Ferguson, wearing a powder-blue polyester tux, aviator-frame glasses, mutton chop sideburns, and long, greasy hair awkwardly parted on one side, the kind of guy you would see on the Newlywed Game. What are some cool things that you have found inside of used LPs?
  6. Don't judge the bonus session by the original album.
  7. Bossa Rio - A&M (stereo, promo)
  8. Mi Amigo Machito - Forum (stereo) Very hip and jazzy for a budget LP, not like the cha-cha-with-vocals that you usually expect from budget Latin LPs.
  9. Mundell Lowe - TV Action Jazz! RCA Camden (stereo) THEE GREATEST ALBUM TITLE EVER. Also contains the definitive reading of Mike Hammer "Riff Blues," with a sensuous solo by Tony Scott.
  10. Walter Carlos - Clockwork Orange - Columbia (stereo) This is the Columbia LP and not the OST. It includes the full-length version of "Timesteps."
  11. Petula Clark - Personne me Veut Mourir/This is My Song - Disques Vogue (mono) One side French, the other English.
  12. I generally don't drink during the week, but I have tomorrow off, and I am enjoying an old fashioned. Or three.
  13. Bump. Listened to this album for the first time in a while - I'm on a drum kick, and there's only so much Chaino - and I agree with my earlier assessment. The original album does little for me, but I love the three long bonus tracks. The original album is the bonus on this disc.
  14. Debussy: Images & Danses - Boulez & Cleveland Orchestra - Columbia Masterworks (stereo)
  15. Stravinsky: Petrouchka - James Levine, Chicago Symph - RCA Red Seal (stereo)
  16. So a record label is obligated to either continue issuing new music or disappearing? Blue Note has left its mark. They are now a part of EMI. They don't have to release anything new to remain relevant or maintain their reputation. For better or worse, jazz has largely become a legacy/heritage genre. Blue Note is a big part of that legacy.
  17. Blue Note is a legacy/heritage label. We don't need new music on Blue Note.
  18. Chaino - Night of the Spectre - Tampa (mono)
  19. Ted Auletta - Exotica - Cameo (mono) Great Martin Denny knockoff. Ted Auletta's combo was the house band at the Hawaiian Room of the Hotel Lexington in Manhattan.
  20. Anita O'Day and Jimmy Giuffre - Cool Heat - Verve (stereo, Japanese reissue). I have a mono original too. I should compare. The Electrifying Eddie Harris - Atlantic (mono) I used to have a stereo copy but unloaded it when I found the mono version.
  21. African Jazz (stereo) is also available as an mp3 download. Not sure of the source of Jungle Jazz. Lots of vinyl rips out there.
  22. I predict a massive Norah Jones reissue campaign. 1958-59 is the 60 year anniversary of Les Baxter's Jungle Jazz and African Jazz, featuring the great Plas Johnson. I predict a twofer reissue, from the master tapes, using the superior mono recording of African Jazz.
  23. Presenting Edu Lobo - Philips (stereo promo)
