  1. I get the fact that history remembers the innovators in all genres - and rightly so - but if the innovators were the only artists we listened to, our collections would all shrink considerably. If other artists want to explore Miles 60s quintet territory, I'm not going to fault them for doing what they want to do. I can similarly decide if I want to buy their records or not.
  2. Now playing. I got this for Christmas when I was in high school, about two or three years ago.
  3. Eydie Gorme - First album? with Don Costa - ABC Paramount (mono)
  4. I LOVE THE COVER ART! That's why I bought it! The record is good too! NP: Coleman Hawkins - Reevaluation: The impulse! Years - impulse!, as you might expect, twofer.
  5. This was generally my sense and my experience also, although I didn't particularly pick up on the "dark" aspects across the board. I heard it in some tracks more than others. I love how Herbie much later said that, during this time, he didn't know what the hell he was doing, and he wasn't sure the rest of the rhythm section knew either. He just knew that he wasn't supposed to play the tunes like he did the night before.
  6. Various - The Compositions of Benny Golson - Riverside (mono) Kenny Burrell & Donald Byrd - All Day Long & All Night Long - Prestige twofer reissue, mono, I think.
  7. What's up with the animal artwork on the sleeves? There is no art credit on the 3 LPs that I have.
  8. Thanks. Is the discography on line?
  9. Various - The Compositions of Horace Silver - Riverside (stereo)
  10. Does anyone have these composer-dedicated compilations on Riverside? I have at least three of them. The rear sleeves list the other albums in the series, but of course, each lists only the albums that had been compiled up to that time. The latest one I have is the Horace Silver volume, #3509. Were there any others after this one? I also have the Monk and Benny Golson albums. Others in the series include Mlles, Bird, Diz, and Duke (2 volumes). EDIT: I waddled over to eBay, and I see that there were also Tadd Dameron and Bobby Timmons volumes.
  11. Jair de Todos os Sambas - Philips (mono)
  12. Miles - In a Silent Way - Columbia After listening for the past few years to the individual sessions on the box set, I wanted to spin the actual vinyl.
  13. Horace Silver - Blowin' the Blues Away - Blue Note (stereo, played back in mono because Blue Note albums nearly ALWAYS sound better in mono, because you boost the bass and piano and horns and drums are not so overbearing. This is how RVG monitored the sessions.)
  14. Sonny Rollins on impulse! (stereo)
  15. Well, from the perspective of a David Axelrod freak, I love it. I love those early 70s fake-rock concept albums. "We Could Be Flying" is the money cut.
  16. Michel Colombier - Wings - A&M Lyrics by Paul Williams. Includes the amazing "We Could Be Flying," as sung by Lani Hall!
  17. Jerry Goldsmith - Outland OST - WB
  18. Chopin: Nocturnes 1-10 & Nocturnes 11-20; Tamas Vasary, Piano (Deutsche Grammophon (stereo) Duke and Trane - impulse! (stereo)
  19. I consider Maiden Voyage and Empyrean Isles to be exotica records. The cover art and the liner notes reinforce this.
  20. Did not know that. I don't think it's on any of my LPs. I have two Guy Warren albums, one on Decca, and another on RCA with amazing cover art.
  21. Sammy and the Count - My Shining Hour - Verve (mono)
  22. Claus Ogerman - Watusi Trumpets - RCA (stereo)
  23. Mel Torme - Comin' Home Baby - Columbia (stereo) Mel Tormie - A Time for Us - Capitol badass green and purple label Piero Piccioni - The Tenth Victim OST - Mainstream (reprocessed stereo) Oscar Brown Jr. - Brother Where Are You? - Atlantic Martin Denny - Exotic Percussion - Liberty (stereo) Nat King Cole and George Shearing - Capitol (rainbow, mono) Sinatra/Hefti - Swingin' Brass - Reprise ( mono) The Best of Gabor Szabo - impulse! (stereo)
  24. According to the producer, the album will be released in 1918!
