  1. Saw the first episode. Big fan of the 60s series. Was expecting to hate the new one, but was pleasantly surprised. What did you think?
  2. Ennio Morricone - The Big Gundown - UA (orange and pink label, stereo) The Nat Pierce - Dick Collins Nonet; The Charlie Mariano Sextet - Fantasy (OJC reissue, mono)
  3. Thanks for sharing. The link you posted also contains this link to a 1942 RCA film showing how records are made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxhiUgK5gzs...feature=related Allen, it's nice to hear that some of the larger labels held onto their masters. What about labels like Dial or Savoy? Is there any truth to the tale about masters being melted during WWII?
  4. I love how Ted Turner is this incredibly wealthy guy, but the logo and bumpers used on his network look like they were done by a PBS station circa 1976. It is a great look and I hope no one there tries to update it any time soon.
  5. Lalo Schifrin/Bob Brookmeyer - Samba Para Dos - Verve (stereo)
  6. Stelvio Cipriani - The Anonymous Venetian OST - UA (beige label) 1971 soundtrack, in sort of a groovy, if laid back, Morriconi bag.
  7. My Dad told me that many of these, I think for Decca in particular, were melted down for WWII. Do very many of these exist anymore? I know I have some LPs that were allegedly mastered from new pressings of old 78 masters. I would be curious to know if there are any estimates for the number of these that exist, particularly for jazz recordings.
  8. Arif Mardin - Glass Onion - Atlantic (white label mono promo)
  9. Howard Roberts - Whatever's Fair - Capitol (rainbow, stereo) I *think* I now have all of HR's Capitol albums. Still need to find some of them in mono, though!
  10. Meireles - Brazilian Beat Vol. 2 - London (stereo, Brasilian pressing) Bobby Hackett, Billy Butterfield, Luiz Henrique - Bobby, Billy, Brasil - Verve (stereo)
  11. I am obsessed with the two albums he recorded with Les Baxter, "Jungle Jazz" and "African Jazz." These must be reissued NOW.
  12. One of the good things about this show is that the charachters are not all good or all bad, kind of like real life.
  13. That's what we're all supposed to think. If you pay attention to the subtleties, you will find that he is becoming a three-dimensional character.
  14. Do you guys think Burt and Angie were at the dinner party?
  15. No you can play straight albums. It's just that shuffle is a nice way to mix things up.
  16. I would think that Shelly Manne and Hank Jones would be very high on the list.
  17. I didn't know where else to place this topic so I'm putting it in Misc. Music. Now that I've experienced nearly 20 years of music on digital media, and with 40+ years of listening to and accumulating LPs, I can say that I listen to them very differently. If I'm doing a bunch of stuff around the house, I'm more apt to put iTunes or my multi-disc CD changer on shuffle. Needless to say, I can listen to CDs in my car and at work too. I'm more likely to skip around to stuff I like. Putting on an LP is more of an event - I like the ritual of cleaning the record, the stylus, and uncorking the bottle of wine. I let the albums play straight through and I listen harder. I feel much more of an emotional connection to LPs because of the aesthetic of the vinyl experience; but in many ways I feel more familiar with the music I've accumulated on CD, because I have many more opportunities to listen to them, put a track I like on repeat, etc. Partly for this reason, I'm made more of a shift to buying digital media in recent years, although nothing can top the thrill of finding something I've really wanted on vinyl. I'm curious if anyone has had similar observations.
  18. Let's try to imagine a dinner party with Herb Alpert and Quincy Jones. Lani Hall must have been there. Who else?
  19. God love Herb Alpert and his wife Lani Hall, who is a very underrated vocalist.
  20. This still hasn't been reissued? I am obsessed with the track "Claudia" which also appears on the MPS "Snowflakes" compilation. Does the whole album sound like this? Very similar vibe to the 1970 Les Baxter and Nelson Riddle sessions for 101 strings. You can just imagine Burt and Angie with a glass of Martini and Rossi, gazing at the sunset from the deck of their yacht.
  21. "Piano and Pen" is a nice album. RIP.
  22. Close. My wife married someone like her brother! You would love hanging out with the four of us! Lots of great 60s grooves and bottles of red wine. Kind of like Xmas 1966 when you received the Walter Wanderley "Rain Forest" album as a gift.
  23. Was "Vocal Shades and Tones" a library album, or was it commercially released?
  24. My bro-in-law just spun this one the other day. I think there are some Barbara Moore tracks on "Up - The Psycho Mellow," which is one of the best groovy/now sound comps that exists, and I have lots of these, believe me.
  25. That's how I discovered this series. I have been OBSESSED with the title track since it first came out on the "Snowflakes" MPS compilation. The only music I feel like hearing right now is stuff that would be played at a fondue party in 1973.
