  1. That worked. Thanks. I wanted to hear some reports on the album before I bought it for my pet White Dolphin for Christmas...
  2. I'm doing a search to see if there has been discussion of Solomon Ilori's album "African High Life." I'm getting pages and pages of hits. While I realize discussions can veer off topic, I find it hard to believe this album got discussed over the course of the "Charlie Brown Christmas" and "White Dolphin Extinct" threads. Is it not working properly now? Even worse, I seem to have posted this in the wrong section. Feel free to move it.
  3. Clare Fischer - Great White Hope (Revelation)
  4. Deep groove, NY pressing, RVG in deadwax.
  5. Quick review: I listened to parts of the reiussue yesterday. Was listening in the car, and I'm not an audiophile anyway, so I can't really comment on the sonics. That said, it sounded like I heard a bit of room ambiance/delay on the percussion that I never really noticed on the original. (Maybe the stereo image has been spread differently). I didn't mind the alternate take of "Linus and Lucy," but I wouldn't have excluded the LP version either. The best bonus cut is the bossa version of "Greensleeves/What Child is This." Overall, I'd recommend this edition if you don't have any other, but I wouldn't say it's essential if you have an earlier version.
  6. Well, what are we waiting for? I have most of the albums he was involved with, either as a leader, arranger or producer...And I've got to say, I love them all - the jazz, bossa, and pop albums, equally. Love him or not, he's a pretty unique figure in jazz, at least in the US. He's the only US musician I can think of who could switch from jazz to pop to rock as effortlessly as the Brasilians do. (They are light years ahead of Americans in this regard). What a shame more of his stuff isn't readily available.
  7. ever since picking up the soundtrack/score for 'the great pumpkin' years ago, i've wondered the very same thing! someone somewhere @ fantasy knows... -e- I never even knew there was a soundtrack release for the Great Pumpkin! I really love the music on the Thanksgiving show too. Lots of funky Fender Rhodes on that one...
  8. One thing the reviews I've read don't address is the jazz underscore in A Charlie Brown Christmas which does not appear on the orginal LP or this expanded reissue, from what I can tell. Of course, as an album, they were probably going for more of the Christmas feel than a typical jazz sound. Are there any Vince Guaraldi experts out there who know anything about this music? Was it merely tracked in from his other LPs, or was it written for the show? If the latter, where are the original recordings?
  9. I've used the Discwasher stylus brush and cleaner for ages. I probably don't clean the stylus as regularly as recommended. At one point I tried this stuff that is supposed to extend the longevity of the stylus, but I didn't buy into it. It seemed like overkill to have two little bottles of different fluid for one little needle...
  10. And on the same day that Peter Boyle went extinct, no less.
  11. On my previous computer, I used Toast to extract and burn CDs. If I ever had a CD that exhibited serious scratching and did not play well, I would use Toast to make a clean copy. One thing I liked about Toast was the fact that it either made an exact clone or it would abort the burn. If it could read through the scratch, it would copy the track perfectly; if not, it would tell you. I’ve tried to do this recently with iTunes, but here’s what it does, at least on my computer: If there’s a scratch in the original that results in a digital repeat, iTunes copies the music with the digital repeat. If the original track runs, say, 5:13, iTunes simply copies whatever aural nonsense occurs for a duration of 5:13 and then happily goes on to copy the next track. Has anyone else ever encountered this?
  12. Happy 1400th Post!
  13. I hope it's not true. Talk about a waste of shelf space. Season 2 has nothing to do with David Lynch, aside from the last episode, which isn't even all that great. Get season 1 and pretend that season 2 never occured.
  14. Ghost, I'm giving my sister June's Got Rhythm for Christmas. Do you have an opinion of it? Her most respected album seems to be Something Cool which I got years ago and enjoy. But I chose this one because Something Cool has her in front of an orchestra, while Rhythm has her with a small group. All of her Capitol albums - at least up to the early 60s - are really solid; but the BEST ones by far are with Pete Rugolo.
  15. I primarily listened to jazz (in the broadest sense) or at least jazz-related. Unfortunately, I listened to lots of stuff only once – often with other stimuli competing for my attention - so I don't know how much of it I really absorbed. Sometimes I miss the days when I had about 25 albums and knew them all intimately, but I suppose that’s another topic!
  16. I love Sundays. Nothing like rekkids and wine...
  17. Vera Brasil - US Revelation label reissue of 1964 Brasilian session (mono).
  18. Ramsey Lewis - Bossa Nova (Argo, mono)
  19. Bernard Herrmann - Sisters - Entr'acte
  20. Swingle Singers - Anyone for Mozart? (Philips)
  21. Gary McFarland, Point of Departure, Impulse!
  22. I used to hate "Carol of the Bells" until my wife pointed out to me that it sounds like it's from one of Dario Argento's giallo films. Just imagine if Goblin had covered it. Now it's one of my favorites. It just goes to show you how context can determine whether you like something or not.
  23. Rolling Stones, Aftermath, London, US MONO (FAT!) red label.
  24. Journeys of Odysseus - A Jazz Suite for Chamber Orchestra by Bob Freedman - Cobblestone/Skye (w/Gary McFarland involvment).
