  1. Well, ValerieB, It's just the facts, Ma'am. I did not personally disparage Mr. Cadena, just related what I gathered from listening, across the room, what Phil Urso and Dave Rucker were commenting about, I believe it was regarding Phil's Savoy album. I hope you can shake off those "negative" vibes and remember Ozzie in the best possible light. OK. ----HB
  2. R.I.P Ozzie. Not to rank on the dead, but I remember, while I was helping out on the Phil Urso doccumentary, directed by Jeff Ravage, Phil and Dave Rucker were kind of chuckling and being generally dismissive of Cadena, I never got the full story, fwiw.
  3. Joy of joy's!! In the discount rack, for .99 cents, in mint condition: Irma Victoria and the Hatebox Experience "Phantasmagoria--The second coming" Mind and Media label. astounding Danish female "singer". Quite disturbing and fresh. I have several other CDs by her, but only had a tape, provided to me by Boyd Rice, of this fab CD. Check her out! Mos def not for everybody. She died in the early 2000's. UNIQUE!!!
  4. Just finished: Blind Terry Darby "BOOTLEGGIN' AIN'T GOOD NO MORE" Blue Planet Records. Right now: Will Shade and Gus Cannon "1961, With Friends at a private Party, Memphis, Tenn." Doccument. LTD. ED. Both great blues LPs for a snowy Denver afternoon.
  5. Oh, man! I am CRUSHED!! I've known Phil for over 18 years and just heard the news. I am going to call his daughter right now. Phil was sooo underrated. Many's the time I spent at his house, looking and reading wonderful letters That Mulligan, Baker, Elliot Lawrence....ET all sent him over the years. Phil, you will be missed!!! I just spoke to him about 2 months a go, and he sounded out of sorts, told me he had "finally hung it up". Love you Phil!
  6. Bennie Wallace Trio "Live at the Public Theater" Inner City. W/ Eddie Gomez and Dannie Richmond.
  7. John Butcher "News From The Shed" Acta. W/ Phil Durrant, Paul Lovens, Radu Malfati and John Russell. Burning!!!!
  8. Was in a bookstore and stumbled across Stephen Calt's "I'd Rather Be The Devil--Skip James and the Blues" Chicago Review Press. Originally in print, for a minute, back in 1994, this is an amazing book for any and all fans of Skip James and/or the Blues. A steal at $16.95! Looking forward to Calt's upcoming book concerning the vernacular of early Blues artists. Awesome book!!
  9. Right now: Lee Konitz "MOTION" Verve. W/ Sonny Dallas and Elvin Jones. So tasty!! Before that: "Original Soundtrack From THE PRISONER" Bam Caruso. ------Be Seeing You.
  10. What other recordings/history about this overlooked saxist can you share? Much thanks!----HB
  11. Sun Ra and Arkestra "Bad and Beautiful" Saturn. Small group session, one of my faves.
  12. Yeah, and Lenny was pals w/ Philly. Lenny also, on occasion, would use Leroy Vinnegar in his "How to relax your colored friends at party's" stand up bit, though not on any recorded versions that I'm aware of.
  13. Benny Carter Quartet "Summer Serenade" Storyville. W/ Kenny Drew, Jesper Lundgard and Ed Thigpen. Fine session!! Really like Carter's "Blue Star".
  14. I don't have a lot of time tonight, but let my opinion ring clear: Gayle Rox Sox. Dig? Mo' later..... ----HB
  15. I'll have to head out to the storage area and fish out the LP of Hope material on the Saxophonograph import label. Yeah, a light tone for the most part. One of the early "Out" muslims, replete with turban. Hit google and you should find some interesting stories about Lynn Hope. I seem to recall Amiri Baraka writing something....... A very interesting charachter and a decent player.
  16. THE SAX SECTION Jazz workshop under the direction of Al Cohn. Swell bunch of cats swing on this LP on the Epic label, mono pressing. Includes Hank Jones, Zoot Sims, Sol Schlinger, Gene Quill, Milt Hinton, Ossie Johnson, and more. Swings!!
  17. Wow! Just this Sunday my far better half returned from Phoenix. While browsing antique shops, scored me a dozen Jazz LPs, amongst them were 3 Handy Roulettes: NO COAST JAZZ, "Quote Unquote" and "In The VERNACULAR". all in NM- condition and all for around $6.00!! My question is, while I have had "NO Coast Jazz" for years, and that twofer of Roulette material. What is the story on the duplications on "IN THE VERNACULAR" and "QUOTE UNQUOTE"? I can see Quote UNQUOTE" was released later, but why the omisions and duplications? Anybody shed some light? Thanks.......
  18. The Jack Kerouac Box set on Rhino. I don't know how many vinyl copies Rhino pressed, but I purchased mine when it came out, and it seems as if it vanished fairly quickly. The lp w/ Zoot and Al Cohn is interesting, if not a "success". I have read a lot depressing stories about that session.
  19. Just been playing a lot of Wally's lps and CDs. Wondering if any other board members dig him?.......
  20. Just finished: Arthur Doyle "NO MORE CRAZY WOMEN" Qbico label. Always enjoyable.
  21. The "free ticket" curse again: The Sex Pistols reunion tour at Red Rocks....UGGGH....Shudder. It was kinda' funny in a very sad kind of way.
  22. Cecil Payne and Duke Jordan "Brooklyn Brothers" Muse.
  23. Been on an Ortega jag for a couple of days, can't get enough!!! I have the Revelations, The "A Delanto" LP on Jazzz, The 10" on Herald, The LP "Jazz for Young Moderns" on Bethlehem, "Rain Dance" on Discovery, The Hat Art CD's, The CD of "A Man and his Horns", Some stuff with Gerald Wilson, The "Jazz Cornucopia" comp. which has some material with Tony w/ the Dick Jacobs Orchestra....and a few other CDs that I cant recall right now....Oh yeah, "Anthony Ortega on Evidence" CD. What am I missing? Also, what do you all feel about the Batman? Sorry if there was another similar thread. ----HB
  24. Anthony Ortega "Permutations" Revelation. Fantastic! The Batman kills on this!! Note to Clifford Thornton: Clifford, I may have a duplicate copy of this, however it is slightly warped. It plays fine, a few crackles. PM me if interested. For you, it would be cheap!! (under $10.00, if I can find the mother.) -----HB
  25. R.I.P Sonny!! I, as well, will put on "Motion" and twirl it on the wheels of steel, while thinking of you!!! ----HB
