  1. Sorry, I took out the reference to Cuscuna when I realized that my memory of this as two different sessions was dead wrong. Cuscuna did produce the US issue for release, though. Since there never was an LP of any of this material in existence until after the Lion/Wolff era, I'm guessing that the Japanese felt it was OK to take a few more liberties with the material.
  2. I'm guessing that's the order which these tunes appear on the master. Not the best from an album standpoint, but OTOH, if you want instant romantic atmosphere, it sure is easier to fast-forward to track 6 and just let 'er run, rather than fiddling with "program play" on your CD player...
  3. BTW, did you send the fudge Priority Mail or by some slower class? 6 days is within the window the USPS gives for delivery of Parcel Post (edit--I just looked and it's shorter to some locations. I dunno why I thought PP was 1 to 2 weeks.). On the other hand, if you sent it Priority, you have reason to complain if it takes 6 days.
  4. I gotta agree with Dan here. I've never had a problem with the USPS. Six weeks ago I sent some stuff home very hurriedly three hours before I had a flight out of Boston. One of these boxes especially was packed like SHIT, with the tape coming off and the postal guy looking at me real funny, but he rolled his eyes and sent it anyway. I had a whole desktop computer tower in that box, and though it was well cushioned, I seriously thought it would never make it. It was at my house in 4 or 5 days, in one piece. It beat all the other boxes home!
  5. Is the U. of Miami CD a live record? If so, I may have been at that show. They did Hang Gliding, among others...I think it was about a year before Allegresse came out. For me the problem with Maria is that the later music is TOO emotional for me to handle. There's something about Allegresse that cuts to the quick in a way that's almost spooky...in the second half especially, the way it drops to such a grim point on Dissolution and then ends so light and free...I just can't bring myself to play it as much as I would like. What that record does to me, I know it sounds weird, but it just doesn't feel HEALTHY to experience except in small, infrequent doses.
  6. Marc Cary Kevin Hays Jaki Byard Walter Norris Hal Galper Marcus Roberts No Bud Powell or Herbie Hancock on your list??
  7. I just installed Picasa and uploaded a bunch of pictures. I still haven't really explored the software but it seems like it focuses more on organizing your pictures than tweaking the images. Still a cool little piece of software.
  8. I got back from a trip to Southeast Asia 3 days ago and my body's still all messed up. By around 5pm I start getting tired and cranky, but I've been forcing myself to stay up until I finally can't stand up anymore, which usually happens around 9:30. That's not such a bad bedtime...except I wake up at 2:30am every day. Then I stay up till around 6, at which point I go back to bed, more out of it seeming like a good idea than actually being tired. Is there anything I should be doing to start getting my sleep schedule back to normal? I'd rather not pop any pills.
  9. Anyone used Picasa? They just partnered with Google and my Sony camera software is somehow related to them. Haven't hooked it up to my PC yet, though.
  10. Is this a live or studio album? I saw this group back in November at the Jazz Standard. Nothing groundbreaking but very enjoyable nontheless.
  11. Ricky Williams is quitting the game. I'm not sure what to make of it. I mean, if I were in Ricky's shoes, you bet I'd take the money and run when the alternative is getting the crap beat out of you day in and day out by defenders. In a sense the whole NFL is crazy and Ricky seems like the only sane one--is getting your body destroyed worth millions more dollars, when many players already have enough cash to live a comfortable life for the next 300 years? I can see how many want a championship badly enough to risk their bodies, but winning it all in the NFL is dependent on a lot of things and many great players never get a ring. On the other hand, I can't help but wonder if the chemicals in Ricky's brain have been acting up again....traveling the world and getting away from it all is great, but the guy still has responsibilities to be with his children if nothing else.
  12. I'm not the seller, but I figured someone might be interested in these, which are pretty cheap right now. They end in a couple of hours: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4025719266&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4025718926&rd=1
  13. No doubt...once I pinpointed the router as the problem, it wasn't very long before I found the solution on the web page. It was determining the problem was the router that was the hassle! I called up BellSouth, my ISP, figuring it was some weird proxy server problem, and they were clueless (in fairness to them, I didn't tell them I was hooked up to a wireless router--hell, I didn't even remember that the router was still plugged into this PC). Good to know that D-Link is responsive, though.
  14. It may be that the problem doesn't occur on every model of router or even on every revision of a particular model. Here I'm using a DI-624, A1 revision. From their website:
  15. Just adding to the knowledge base on the board in case anyone else is having similar problems: Over the last three days, I had a bizarre problem getting into the board. Eventually, I discovered that not only would I get "400 Bad Request" errors when trying to post to any board powered by the Invision Power Board Software, but I also couldn't access my Yahoo mail Inbox. This also happened whenever I connected on my notebook PC from home, which never had any problems with the board before. After much googling I figured out that this problem is with the D-Link wireless router that's connected to my DSL modem on this machine. You basically have to go into the router software and slightly lower one setting (the Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting). Voila!
  16. Yes, we are returning thrugh Bangkok--but right now we only have about a 9 hour layover in the city, so we most likely won't leave the airport area. However, I am mulling over the idea of staying an additional 16 days or so in Bangkok, then heading to Japan (maybe Kyoto or somewhere else in the Kansai area) for a week to visit my girlfriend, who's there again this summer. Changing the ticket may be expensive, though. Thanks for the info on the subway. The Skytrain was very nice, though a bit limited in scope, so with luck the subway will fill in the gaps. Also, thanks Phil--we're in Yogya right now and it looks like we will in fact have time to go to Parangtritis, as we just scuttled our original idea of moving on to Bali. I admit that I'm a bit spoiled by having a great beach on my doorstep (not literally) at home in Florida, but don't think I've ever seen a black sand beach before. I've taken about 200 pictures already and will see if I can't upload some of the good ones when I get back.
  17. Checkin' in from Kota Kinabalu, Borneo now...the people out here are damned nice. The weather is hot, though, with only a little rain, and it's tough to stay hydrated. Internet cafes are cheap and all over the place, especially in Bangkok, so I've been connected to the outside world (and even lurking here a little). Think we're gonna head out to the night market in a bit...
  18. Yeah, strangely enough AOL (!!) browser works fine, I just discovered. I can't even post on this board or fill out most Web forms, let alone check my Yahoo mail, from IE or Opera. Dunno what the heck is going on as I haven't messed with any settings on those. I'm using my mom's BellSouth DSL...wonder if they messed with anything at some point.
  19. Just wanted to thank everyone again for their great suggestions as I get ready to leave in a few hours. Will try to post pictures when I get back!
  20. I've been trying to get into my Yahoo mail for three days with no success. This happens on multiple browsers--could a firewall be causing this problem?
  21. No, unfortunately I don't have the $$ or time right now to A/B the two. It does seem that the shrillness is more apparent on the first (5/24/54) session (the "Afro" suite) than on the later (6/3/54) session.
  22. Oh, shit. While I'm hot and cold as far as Water Music goes, the Regattabar had better not turn into the Blue Note. Still, if all the Blue Note people do is determine which acts play there, it won't be so bad. My beef with the Blue Note is not usually the quality of the music, it's all the other crap--the high prices, stupid NYC drink minimums, extremely cramped seating, and jerky see-and-be-seen clientele--that spoil it for me.
  23. I just picked up Diz's "Afro," and this version has a little "made in the UK" sticker on it. Otherwise it looks identical to the US version of the CD. The music is great, and while the sound is not bad overall, it is somewhat unpleasantly shrill in the louder passages, maybe distorting a bit. Does anyone know if these UK versions are substantially different from their US counterparts in this series?
  24. Current crazes: Jarritos Grapefruit soda Sumol Passion Fruit soda (from Portugal)
  25. Have you tried Priceline or a similar name-your-own-price deal? With them, you can sometimes get a better fare as the date of your flight approaches, the opposite of what happens with the airlines. I think the reason for this is that there are still empty seats that don't get bought when the airlines raise their published fares. If you are a student, it couldn't hurt to take a look at studentuniverse.com .
