  1. Jim Sangrey occasionally mentions that he adopted a "macrobiotic" diet for awhile an eon or two ago. I'm taking an anthro class on how food relates to various human cultures and I'm curious: what exactly did your diet include and proscribe, Jim? I've done some casual searching on the Internet about the topic but most of my results are just ads for online health food stores. Right now, I'm reading the anthropolgist Marvin Harris's Good to Eat, which has a brief mention of "the followers of 'macrobiotics' leader George Ohsawa, who aim to exist on nothing but brown rice, soy sauce, and herbal teas..." Did you follow Ohsawa's diet or does the macrobiotics movement have a number of different schools?
  2. Jim, you may want to try switching or upgrading browsers to see if that'll help. At work, I post from an IMac running IE 5 for Mac and the text here also looked very small, though it looks quite big from my PC at home. If they make Opera for Macs, you might want to give it a shot and see if the text is still small.
  3. Ed, although Blue Note's website lists the Complete BOTC as a 2CD set, both the live and studio material is actually all packed into only one CD. They goofed.
  4. Oh yeah. I found a Japanese import of this for about $5 last year and COULD NOT BELIEVE how good it was. That version of Just In Time has some of the tightest playing ever!
  5. FYI: I was just browsing www.daedalusbooks.com and saw they had the Three Baritone Saxophone Band disc as a cutout for $5.98.

AMG makes this virtually unknown organist sound pretty damned impressive. Does the playing on "Feel Real" live up to the hype?
  7. Maren, I was about to post about the text thing too, but I discovered that a change of browser remedied the situation. Usually I use Netscape 4.7, but I found that IE 5 will display pages without scrolling. There might be a fix you can do in Netscape, but I couldn't find it.
  8. The third bari on the 3 Baritone Saxophone Band was Gary Smulyan, not Cecil Payne.
  9. I think the UPCs might have to do with planning for the future. Out here at the major supermarket chain they have recently instituted self-service checkout. (jmjk, if you shop at Star Market, you've probably seen 'em.) You scan your stuff yourself and then swipe your credit card when you're done. I think you can also put cash in an envelope or something and slide it into a slot like you'd deposit cash at an ATM. It's pretty cool but the main thing that slows you down is entering the codes for produce, which you have to look up on a little touch screen they have near the scanner. So I think this measure might be less for helping the cashier (and BTW, there are a LOT of codes to remember--I think my local Star has about a dozen different kinds of oranges alone!) than it is for the customer's benefit--scanning produce means you get through the checkout a lot faster and avoid pissing off everyone behind you.
  10. Hey gang, looking forward to posting here. My real name's Adam, but I'm sticking with my old handle for now to avoid confusion should the other Adam, the one from LA, show up.
