Hope you have a great B-Day, Paul!

It was a plea, hence the word “please”. It wasn’t a command. Nobody has that kind of power. This is my last post in this thread. This is not the place for such petty meta posting.

Disorder At The Border Plays Ornette (2015)

He has no experience in it from the perspective and reality of the addict. He has made that perfectly clear. Steve, who probably knows addiction more than all of us combined, tried to respectfully correct him. As for the cause, it could be completely unrelated to his addiction. But the liklihood of that is almost nil due to the all encompassing effects of addiction on the body.
-
Great. Speak. Just know that you come across as incredibly self-centered, and completely ignorant concerning the subject of addiction. The awareness you lack, and the selfishness you display, are actually quite similar to the behaviors of an addict. And like most addicts, when someone tries to respectfully step in to help, you’re immediate and permanent response is essentially, “fuck you! I’ll do what I want.”

Jim, I’ve really grown to respect you over the years. Your thoughtfulness, insight, oddball musings, left field philosophy, all of it. And I hope you take this as sincerely and respectfully as I mean it to be. I work in substance abuse. Please do not speak any further on the subject.

A sudden end for a troubled soul. Not even 8 months my senior. Rest peacefully, brother. -

All the 2009 remasters are amazing. As is Love. But none of them come close to the revelation that is the Sgt Pepper remix. -

Or Beggars Banquet! I can't imagine a world without Sympathy For The Devil. -

They are indeed. What I meant was they are what most consider the big four. All released one after the other, and considered the best Rolling Stones albums. But hey, your mileage may vary. If all I could listen to were the four you mentioned, I be perfectly happy with that. Did you not like Some Girls? That’s a phenomenal album, IMO. -

WOW! So no Sticky Fingers or Exile On Main St.?! Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile are the Big Four! One of the biggest win streaks in music history. How could you stop after the first two? -
Rock's appearance vs Jazz's appearance

A couple of months ago it popped into my head, "I'm going to revisit my entire Coltrane catalog!" Two albums in, I bailed and moved onto something else. I just...couldn't. I found myself mentally disengaging from it because I had heard it all before, and SO many times! While I wouldn't describe the situation as unpleasant, I would say it was a waste of time (which I suppose is even worse). Seems to me the only way super familiar albums work anymore is as background music. The upside, for me, is with streaming it opens up nearly limitless possibilities. I'm no longer constrained by my physical collection of music. And because of that I've likely heard more music in the last year and a half than I had in the previous 10 years. No shit. Of course, there are downsides to that, which I won't get into now. -

Nowhere Man has always been on the North American release of Rubber Soul. Unless there was a different release than the one I’ve had on three different formats. As for the sequence thing, you are spot on. One recent example that really stands out to me is the “restored” version of The Final Cut from Pink Floyd. I simply can’t get When The Tigers Broke free to fit in mentally. -

What do you mean by “detaching” yourself from a narrative? You can’t wipe your memory, so what happens when the familiar note patterns lock in with your memory? I could likely boil The Beatles down to a 10 song album and not miss anything that didn’t make the cut. I’m usually one that appreciates over-indulgence, but that album is really a hot mess without the upside of say, Exile On Main Street. -

Rock's appearance vs Jazz's appearance

Interestingly, I don’t see myself in any music I listen to. Now, I did when I was a teenager growing up on Heavy Metal, but not since then. I wonder why? Music definitely speaks TO me, but not for or of me. -

Simon, you stated you could hear something that doesn’t really connect with you, but you can appreciate the artistic value of it. If that isn’t the definition of a curiosity, what is? Something that is interesting because it is unusual. Or in the case of music, outside of your tastes. -

And that underscores my comment above. It either speaks to you, or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it may remain a curiosity, but it certainly won't be integrated into your life and listening habits. You won't feel anything for it. You won't tell people, "man, you gotta check this shit out!" So yes, all music speaks to/for/of someone. -

Doesn't that last sentence represent pretty much all music? -
You could have said that you saw pictures of it in an old family album and kept the mystery alive.

Growing up we had an 8-track player in almost every room pf our house.
-
That’s correct. Just found this: ”The Stereo-Pak differs from Stereo 8 in its ¼" magnetic tape contains four data (music) tracks, whereas 8-tracks have twice the tracks in the same amount of space. Thus, 4-track tapes have the potential for higher audio fidelity.” For some reason I thought the higher fidelity came from higher tape speed.
-
Pretty sure the cartridges were the same size, Kevin. 4-track played at a higher speed for higher fidelity. Think of it like the difference between EP and LP on your old VCR.
-
Another potential factor, and my memory is very fuzzy on this one, but 8-tracks and cassettes didn’t share much overlap, did they? It seemed as though 8-track close up shop the day cassettes hit the market. Kevin, I take it you’re joking about the 4-track/8-track thing?
