  1. Ah... I actually was. But obviously in a cryptic manner.
  2. Which tune? I’ve not heard disc four yet, as I’ve been constantly returning to the first two.
  3. Royals looked about as good as I was expecting. Gonna be a looooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnng season...
  4. Trust me, brother. I was right there with you not too long ago. But then I heard a piece...and it just clicked! No way to describe it. Reminds me of when I first bought Kind Of Blue because I thought it was a must for any budding Jazz fan. I listened to that damned thing nine times, and couldn’t figure out for the life of me what anyone heard in it. It was “nice”, but certainly not special. Oh, but then there was the tenth time...
  5. And that’s exactly what I was thinking. We often “come around”, but that takes time and often repitition. Those cats had neither of those luxuries that night. I’d be willing to bet MANY of the folks that whistled and booed (!) Trane that night later on in life were blissfully grooving to Sun Ship and Live In Japan. By that time they’d had time to come to terms with what they were hearing.
  6. My current love is the relatively obscure Free Improv artists. It’s actually quite shocking how much of their material is available!
  7. Not on Apple Music. Are those titles OOP? They had three Jackie Ivory titles, none from The Loving Sisters, one from Super Djata, and MANY from all the others. BUT, any album that has either never been released on CD, or is OOP, will not be found on any streaming service. No, I use Apple Music. They have a three month free trial if you want to check them out before you buy.
  8. Yes, of course. But I was trying to imagine what it would have been like for even the most hardcore listeners at that time, in that moment. We have the luxury of having been down that highway multiple times, to the point where we’re disappointed when we DON’T get the wild and the wooly harmonics/multiphonics. What did the hardcore Jazz fan have to go on back then? Reminds me of the first time I heard some of the melody-less, rhythm-less, beat-less European Free Improv cats. Even with a ton of Free Jazz in my rearview mirror, what they were doing sounded like silly random noises to me. Now it’s my primary listening concern. So I can only imagine that at that time, in that moment, there’s at least a small chance I may not have been so welcoming to his approach, either.
  9. Unfortunately, this can said for many of the legacy Jazz labels. They’ve only been treading water by repackaging the same tired material for decades now. I actually applaud Blue Note for taking that chance on Norah Jones all those years ago in an attempt to remain fresh and viable in the market.
  10. I have zero LPs and around 1,000 CDs. Most of which are ripped to my iMac so I can stream them over wi-fi to my main system in the living room. So no, they don’t “come out” much, but strictly for the convenience of it. Hell, I haven’t owned a true CD player for many years! I think if you gave streaming a try (not the free Spotify stuff) you’d actually come to like it. I was a huge skeptic for years and years. Now I hardly ever buy downloads anymore. And those that I do are because my wife’s Pilot only has a CD player and no Bluetooth capabilities.
  11. ??? What does any of that even mean?
  12. Why not? Outside of box sets, I use it exclusively now. And that was after years of avoiding it BECAUSE I didn’t think it was viable.
  13. I had never even heard that term before. Always assumed it was yet another term that described Smooth Jazz.
  14. BTW, I’m listening to the set again today. That part of Trane’s solo on All Of You with the long stretch of multiphonics? 30 seconds worth. Even for a veteran listener, that can be quite exhausting.
  15. If listening to Coltrane were like being in the military, I’d be a fucking retired five star general! Yet hearing this recording last Saturday still fucked me up! So, no. I can’t understand it not hitting anyone even lightly acquainted with Coltrane’s music.
  16. Interesting. You seem to be in the minority of one so far.
  17. While My Lady Sleeps is a kindergarten class, whereas the Olympia set is at the university level. I doubt playing that for three seconds at the end of a tune in no way prepared anyone for that night.
  18. Oh, good. More reissues of the same reissues many have multiple copies of already. No, Mr. Was, you actually HAVE given up on Jazz.
  19. Yes! The Rite of Spring premiere is a perfect analogy. Like that, this was an almost primitive display that simply had no historic context which could have prepared the audience. It was especially shocking to hear him playing in this way against the backdrop of a rhythm section of Chambers/Kelly/Cobb, as compared to the more aggressive rhythm sections he played with in the following years.
  20. The other way to go is to not waste your money on HDtracks...UNLESS it's remastered and ONLY available through them. But even in that case it likely isn't worth the money.
  21. I'm seeing that Capital has owned 50% of Mosaic since the late 90's. Nothing about UMG. UMG's parent company is called Vivendi. Edit: oops, Hans beat me to it.
  22. You don't live in Cleveland?
  23. Wow! What a bunch of idiots! Best of luck with the mechanical argument. Listeners didn't have paid subscriptions to radio stations.
  24. No, absolutely not. That would essentially be pirating. If Spotify did that they would end up taking a dirt nap(ster).
