  1. I haven't owned one since 2012. Physical disc media is pretty much dead. Even Oppo announced a few days ago that they were shutting down all their production. I think that once lossy codecs finally caught up to lossless audibly it was all over but the crying.
  2. Well, that throws a wrench in the machine!
  3. Ah, ok. That makes sense. I wasn't aware the DSD had to be bounced down to PCM. Thanks for explaining that!
  4. XLR is an analog output, so you’re relying on the DAC in the CD player. Do you have a digital coax or optical out from the CD player? If so, I’d try one of those out to your DAC/preamp. Might make a difference.
  5. How is running it out digital to a DAC adding an extra data conversion step? Once it hits a DAC, all conversion is done. Either the CD player converts it, or the outbound DAC does. Or am I misreading what you’re saying?
  6. Far better, actually. The separate DAC is likely better than the onboard DAC in your CD player.
  7. No, I mean run digital out from the CD player into whatever preamp/receiver you currently have it plugged into. Let that DAC do the dirty work and see if it improves the overall sound. You're currently running analog/RCA outs, right?
  8. If it sounds better than your CD player, why not run digital out?
  9. Correct.
  10. No, the Legacy Edition is the 50th anniversary release from 2009. Different masters/mixes.
  11. I just got done doing a comparison between the 1997 release and the Legacy Edition. There is a very, very small difference. Most notably the bass being slid back in the mix ever so slightly, and the piano being moved slightly inside the original hard left pan. Pretty sublime, but only if you’re REALLY listening closely.
  12. Is there a discernable difference between the MoFi remaster and the Legacy Edition? And can hybid SACDs be played on a regular CD player?
  13. Aren’t split tones and multiphonics the same thing?
  14. So MoFi only released it on SACD, or did they also release it on CD? And I'd have to go back and read the liner notes for the '97 release. Pretty sure they said they used the original master tapes, and corrected the speed while remastering. edit Just found this: "For decades, musicians were aware that when playing along with side one of Kind of Blue it was necessary to retune their instruments to a slightly sharper pitch so as to be in tune with the recording. This anomaly was rectified in 1992 with the release of the gold Mastersound reissue of Kind of Blue, using the tape recorded at the correct pitch from the safety machine. The 1997 reissue went a step further, remixing the safety tape (at the correct pitch) and offered the only known alternative take of the whole session, the composition that opens with four bars of Bill Evans’ ‘Peace Piece."
  15. Where did this info come from? The way Miles dishes in his "autobiography", my guess is that if it was him, he'd have mentioned it in the book. For that matter, even if it wasn't, but he knew someone had said something, he'd have mentioned it. Just a hunch.
  16. The 1997 Columbia release had already corrected the speed to restore it to the correct pitch. Is the SACD from the MoFi remaster?
  17. On larger playlists it seems to favor the same songs no matter what. For example, I have one playlist with about 180 songs on it. If I shuffle it and play fifty of them let's say, about thirty of them will be the same each session.
  18. Is the stereo version of KOB on SACD remastered? Or is it from the CD master?
  19. Not sure, but I can tell you that shuffle on the iPad Air 2 is as bad as has always been.
  20. Asteroidea and A Quietness Of Water are my two favorite albums from 2017.
  21. I would seriously doubt they've changed the iPod DAC...ever. Why would they? My 3rd gen sounded brilliant. As does me phone and pad.
  22. If I could survive while eating nothing but kimchi, I'd consider doing it. Spicy, though. Not a fan of the regular.
