Are you a Pink Floyd fan? I hear a direct lineage between them and Sigur Rós. It's all about the atmospherics. I think Agaetis Byrjun is a masterpiece. When I first read this post, I read it as Steely Dan! I'm sure you can imagine my reaction!

I think if someone goes to your profile page and leaves a message in your "feed" it shows up publicly. For example, click on my profile and you'll see that option under the activity tab. Because I can see that exchange when I look at your profile. Looks like it works like a pseudo Facebook "wall" kind of thing. Before Lois shut down JC, there was a similar feature.

My only quibble with this box is the insane amount of alternate takes, false starts and breakdowns. It just seems like they stuffed a little TOO much fluff in it. It can sometimes be a chore to wade through it all to get to the substance. I do give them extra points for the unique packaging, though.

How are they live?

I'm not sure if it's overrated, but the fact there are 6 different recorded versions from that year make me cringe...

That's interesting. I'm not a huge fan of Favorite Things, just because it was played to death over the course of his catalog. BUT, the version I really, REALLY like is the one from New Thing At Newport. It's the sound of four monstrously creative forces in completely uncontrolled, yet perfectly contained, chaos. The sound of a group in meltdown mode from having flown too close to the sun, and living to tell the tale. I'll have to check out the Newport '63 version again due to your recommendation, as it seems like you and I have a similar ear for Trane.

OH! I forgot one: John Coltrane - Live Trane: The European Tours That takes all the horridly mixed stereo Pablo releases and mixes them back down to mono, resulting in a FAR better product.

Miles Davis - The Blue Note and Capitol Recordings If for no other reason than the fact that they include the astonishing Somethin' Else from Cannonball.

I just can't get past Ali's playing during that era. Yeah, I get the whole "multi-directional" thing. A rhythmic carpet, fine. My ears were too tuned into Elvin. I did dig what he did later in his career, particularly The Rings Of Saturn. But his work in '66 and '67? I'll pass. As for Alice, while she was a step down from McCoy, I never thought she was bad in any way. It's really too bad that The Olatunji Concert is so horrid sonically, because she was really on fire there! I also thought she played some badass stuff on the VV date. That's the best post-quartet date, IMO.

I'll gladly cast a third vote for Crescent! His best album from 1964... Yeah, I said it. Also, Stellar Regions > Interstellar Space

That and Coltrane Jazz were his two best Atlantics, IMO.

Not mine. It's one of the only Coltrane albums I still don't "get". My favorite would either be First Meditations or Sun Ship.

If they make their cartridges up to the same standard as their earbuds, I'm not sure how anyone could look down on it.

I don't know, I'll ask him. And just to be clear, he bought his amp on eBay (for only $1100! He just had to solder a few things), so he'd likely be willing to go that route for his TT.

I used a FM transmitter in my old work van, and I can confirm that while they're a really neat gadget, they sound like shit.
