Last Saturday I went in to a little shop that sold used bits of this and that and they had a small pile of records. I found a moldy covered but minty vinyl of an album by Gato Barbieri and Dollar Brand on the Arista label. I think the album was called Confluence. I had a chance to listen to side one before retiring last night and really liked it. The vinyl's real quiet too. Maybe I'll find another copy some day with a good cover. This one has some serious water and mold damage. Oh, and it cost a whole $1.00!

I can no longer trust new USA vinyl production....

It's not about listening, it's about owning said albums. There was a thread somewhere unrelated to jazz where a poster was ticked off because people back in the day played their Beatle albums to death, so collectors like him today are left with worn out lps to purchase used. Yeah, what were those fans thinking? Don't play the music, just put it on a shelf and look at it. That's what it's really for. -

Well since most of the members here are also over there.......and your screen name is the same at both locations.....I bet that person is here tracking your every move ...waiting for the right opportunity to pounce and deface your favorite Lexington Ave labels with a wild combination of bold zig-zagging Magenta, Cerulean & Neon Carrot crayon streaks! Nooooooooo!!!!!!! Seriously, is there anyone on this board that is obsessing over his and other's subscription number? I don't know what's more lame, obsessing over your number or asking Joe Harley every other day, when's the next batch coming out? -

A load of 'my dick's bigger than yours' stuff going on at that board - as in 'my subscription number is lower than yours'. Jeez.. A while back I did a mean thing on the board. Under the thread asking about subscription numbers I said I had a number that was the same as someone else who had recently signed up but hadn't received any records yet. I think it freaked him out a little. I did it to underscore the rediculousness of such dick measuring but I probably shouldn't have done it. I ignored his questions regarding my number (I'm not a subscriber) too which probably caused him to lose a little sleep. -

I agree Cap'n. When one has records that are 50 years old that has fewer pops and clicks and covers without flaws, you have to ask the question what am I paying $50.00 for? There was one guy on the Hoffman board that was complaining about the music on Capuchin Swing! Whether you like it or not is one thing, but dropping $50.00 on a record that you know nothing about blows my mind. I guess I'm tighter with my record money, but sheesh. I would never spend that kind of dosh without knowing what I was getting. -
I had a nice listening session last night. I played some albums I haven't heard in a while. Down Home Reunion - The Young Men from Memphis (UA)DG Mono Ritual - The Jazz Messengers (Pacific Jazz) Maroon DG Mono Mustang - Curtis Amy (Verve) Black MGM Mono Them Dirty Blues - Cannonball Adderly (Riverside) Blue DG Mono and finally Kenny Burrell - (Bluenote) vol.2 DG Lexington Mono The house was swinging last night!

Several years ago I bought a pair of Kimber Cable interconnects called Heroes for my cd player. When I plugged them in and began listening to them the sound was quite harsh with a lot of emphasis on the high frequencies. I had read a lot about burn in time for cables, electronics etc. but this was the first time it really stood out. I had thoughts of returning them, but I played a burn in track from a Stereophile disc overnight and the sound improved the next day and after maybe two or three days my system was back to normal and sounding great again. It was the most dramatic change I've ever experienced changing pieces in my system. I'm one to be skeptical about these kinds of things but I know what I heard. On the other hand, I would never spend rediculous amounts of money on such things. The Heroes cost me about $125.00 at the time and that's about as high as I'm willing to go.

I haven't heard that in twenty years!

So here it is... almost 5 months later and Analogue Productions has shipped the first of 50 Blue Note 45 rpm vinyl titles. Has RTI fixed their problems? Well, not according to the guys over on the Steve Hoffman forums! Scratched, make that gouged, records. Noisy. Labels falling off. Duplicate LPs (two disc 1's). Check out the LP surface in the photo someone took. The price for this high-quality LP? $50! Kevin With these kinds of issues going on with these reissue companies, I was surprised at the number of people on the Hoffman board that subscribed to the series. I don't have enough faith even if I wanted to buy all of them. So far, they haven't released anything that I have to have and I'm not that interestd in 45 rpm albums even if they do sound a little better than the 33 1/3 versions. I like good sound, but I'm not THAT obsessive about it. I will get Basra when they get around to releasing it. -

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
six string replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Last night and this morning I listened to disc 4 and 5 of the Stanley Turrentine box. I love his arrangement of Randy Weston's In Memory Of on disc four. -
I buy either TYs or Mitsui discs depending on the price at Am-Digital. Right now they have a special on TY discs. 200 unbranded discs for $50.00. I've never had a bad disc from either brand and I've gone through hundreds of them.

About a year ago, I rediscovered Sweetnighter. I think I like it better now than I did in the 70's. I've always loved Mysterious Traveler for the mood it sets. I can't listen to Birdland much anymore but the rest of that album is fantastic. I think I'll go put on their first album now.

I haven't heard Silent Pool, bluenote82, but it probably should be on my "short list" of must-hears. Alan Broadbent is a marvelous arranger. There are maybe five or six jazz "with strings" albums - tops - that reach me. This sounds like a candidate for a spot on that list. Any other reactions to this album? Silent Pool is a favorite of mine. I have a small book shelf in the living room with one shelf devoted to early morning kind of discs and this one has never left. It is one of the most beautiful jazz w/strings albums I have ever heard. The strings are well integrated into the music, not some "topping" as a second thought. That Wallace Roney album is very nice too.

Very Saxy - Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis et. al. (Prestige) orig. DG Mono Another thread made me pull this out and play it. It's been a while.

In our quest to lower our tv's "profile" in the living room, we found that the only way we could get exactly what we wanted was to buy custom pieces. We had been using a hodge podge of particle board based shelves, so this was going to be a big improvement asthetically speaking. We ended up with a "euro" design from Sanus. Shelves were made of really thick glass in a slightly green hue and silver posts. Not only was it beautiful in appearance and lowered the tv the way we wanted, but I was pleasantly surprised at how it improved the sound of the stereo. It was very noticeable from the start.

My favourite track ! There's one in every crowd! Thanks Dave.

How is that album anyway? I've seen it before on vinyl and cd but the cover and the title always scared me away. He's one of my favorite drummers. I was listening to a recent purchase earlier. Blues on Down - Benny Golson (Milestone) Twofer I was listening to side one/two or better known as The Modern Touch originally on Riverside
-
Today and Now - Coleman Hawkins (Phillips) Stereo Dutch pressing of the Impulse album

Jessica Williams has been making electronic jazz albums for years. I have a bunch of cassettes I got from her over the years. The early ones were less sophisticated rhythmically speaking due to the hardware at the time. However as the equipment improved, so did her projects. She has one on her website for sale now. I don't own that one because I have so much of her electronic stuff including two volumes of her Miles tribute she put out on cassette before cds became her medium of choice. I can vouch for the performance/quality. She does all of her programming, creating most of the sounds she uses on the synths and she's very good at that sort of thing. Her drumming on the albums are very real sounding and they even swing, believe it or not. She uses triggers for both hands and feet which gives it a more nautural feel. It is jazz, it's just not made with acoustic intruments. Her website is Jessicawilliams.com You can listen to some of the songs on Virtual Miles and see for yourself.

Last weekend I picked up Wichi Tai To and Dansere. Both feature Bobo Stenson, a pianist I really like. I also found a George Russell Sextet album on Soulnote with Jan Garbarek on it and it's excellent as well.

OJC Pressings and their place on the market

Sorry for the confusion. I did indeed mean vinyl and not cds, which is why I posted it in the vinyl section. I should have been more clear. -

Wow! I've not seen anything like that here in Northern California. I don't shop in San Francisco and Berkeley like I used to, so I don't know what's going on there, but I feel pretty confident to say it's not as bad as what you're seeing. If the sound of those lps was poor, I wouldn't be buying them for the most part, but they do sound good. It's only when you compare them to the originals that they don't always stack up. If you never hear the original, you'll never know. I'm not doing any panic buying and I'm not trying to start such, but I do know that I'm no longer sticking my nose up at these pressings.
