  1. Sophisticated Swing - Cannonball Adderley (Emarcy) Blue Label DG
  2. Trane Whistle - Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis Big Band (Prestige) OJC New one for me. I love the energy on that one and it's always a joy to hear Eric Dolphy. followed by Mating Call - Tadd Dameron (Prestige) OJC My first Dameron album and I really dig it.
  3. Soul Junction - Red Garland (Prestige) Japanese pressing followed by The Rat Race Blues - Gigi Gryce (Prestige) OJC
  4. You're right. It is nice to hear him in a different setting occasionally. I really rate the album Quintessence highly for the same reason.
  5. This morning I listened to Randy Weston's With These Hands on Milestone (half of the Zulu twofer). Now after hearing of Chris Anderson's passing I'll listen to his trio recording Inverted Image on Jazzland (DG) Mono.
  6. That's very sad news. RIP Chris. He's brought me many moments of joy listening to his albums. I was introduced to him by that first Mapleshade release and have subsequently found others by him over the years. He's an amazing pianist and should have been better known. One of my prized records in my collection is his album Inverted Image on Jazzland. I will play it and a few others tonight.
  7. This is the copy I have. Nice to know it's an original. I didn't know about the three covers. Any love for the African Game album on Bluenote? I picked it up on a whim a few years ago and really like it. For what it's worth, Jazz in the Space Age is probably my favorite album by him.
  8. When Debra mentioned having trouble picking a collection of John Lee's music I thought of the Cafe A Go Go album which I have. I don't know if it's his best or not, because I haven't heard all of his releases *wipes brow*. It is an excellent collection of live music by the man and Muddy's in his band! Another shout for Muddy's Chess Box and his Folk Singer album. The latter I have on SACD and if you can play it, it is so real sounding you'll think he's in the room with you. Great performance AND sound.
  9. Count me in as a big fan of Lewis Nash too. At times it seems like he's everywhere I go. I've seen him perform with so many different bands. The last time I saw him was with Bobby Watson w/John Hicks on the piano stool. Fantastic show as you would expect.
  10. I really like that Barry Altschul album. I just acquired a copy myself last summer at a radio station sponsored record sale.
  11. What blows me away even more than that, if you read that thread, is that there is market for $50 audiophile pressings of ZZ Top albums. Why not just go to the Goodwill? The ZZ Top album is only $25.00. It's still too much though. I have an original pressing I bought two months ago for $3.00 that sounds amazing. The cover has a fair amount of ringwear on it, but the lp is in amazingly good shape. I can't imagine this reissue sounding 8 times better. It's just not possible imo. Even if it was, how much do you think I really care? I mean it's ZZ Freakin' Top.
  12. I'd own the both of them if they were 33 1/3 rpm LPs. I am not getting into this 45 rpm fetish. And I still don't agree that cutting them at 45 rpm makes them sound any better. It just adds cost and makes them more expensive. Agreed. I'm not interested in having to get up after every song or two for just a little bit better sound. However, when they reissue Basra, I will make the exception. What blows my mind is that there are people on the Hoffman board buying these and they don't listen to jazz. Of course they might change their mind after hearing them, but damn, $50.00 a pop and you don't know anything about the music? Agreed to everything. This 45rpm reissue is just an intend to create another marketed driven mania. IMO Hoffman and his clique of arrogant know-it-all are nothing else but businessmen. Now regarding "Basra" bought by non jazz addicts, its another proof of the intelectual vacuity of some audophile onanists. Just to be sure you didn't misunderstand. Basra hasn't been released yet. So no one, jazz fans or otherwise is buying it. I saw it on the list that they plan to release. It's not very well known compared to most of the other titles lined up for release, so it's possible that it won't happen. It wouldn't be the first time that title was dropped from the release list.
  13. Last night I found an add for other releases inside the album cover, including volume one of this recording. There were quite a few from the Mode and Tampa record label. Back on track, this morning I listened to Soul Mates - Ben Webster/Joe Zawinul (Riverside) OJC. What a sweet record.
  14. I love Nat's playing on New Delhi. His muted horn and Victor's vibes really set the tone of that song.
  15. So I shouldn't expect to find volume one anytime soon? I should give Jim a call and see if he does have the other volume in back. You never know about this stuff in "Used Land."
  16. I've had the cd for years. Cannonball was an early favorite of mine when I began my "serious" love affair with jazz. His music has always seemed easy on the ears for a newby, yet still very satisfying on many levels once you've been around the block a few times. I haven't played it in a while so thanks for reminding me of it. I think I'll give it a listen tomorrow.
  17. I know nothing about the history of this record. I just bought it yesterday at one of my local used record shops. There are a lot of names on the cover that could be construed as the record company. In the top left corner of the front of the cover it says STACKED. On the upper right corner it says Omegatape ST-2030. On the back cover under the liner notes it says Omega Records Inc. Hollywood California and underneath that in smaller letters it says Mfd. and Dist. by V.S.O.P. Records with a Washington D.C. P.O. Box number. Also on the back in two places it says Omegatape International Pacific Recording Company. On the record label after V.S.O.P. Records is 1985. This looks like it might be the date of the pressing. Also this is labeled Vol.2 and there is a mention in the liner notes of volume one by Jeff Bart from Jazz Times. When you say tape are you talking about reel to reel, eight track, cassette? I could tell it was a strange pressing but I couldn't pass it up based on the band and the record was in great shape and didn't "look" too cheaply made like some labels I avoid with the plague.

  19. Last night I gave the following a spin. Groovin' with Jug - Richard Holmes and Gene Ammons (Pacific Jazz) Blue/Silver Stereo The Art of Pepper - Art Pepper (Omega) Stereo The In Between - Booker Ervin (Bluenote) Liberty pressing
  20. Sweet! I love a story with a happy ending.
  21. Assuming this is not a joke - Rocky Boyd is a real person. He used to live in Boston, and occasionally showed up in the audience for jazz gigs. It was a joke. That's why I put the big smiley after the statement. I thought the OP was meant as a joke as well.
  22. On the cover of Ease It, he's shown without his instrument. He was probably some guy off the street the photographer asked to pose for the picture.
  23. Eno's Music for Films (E-G Editions)
  24. I took another look at my RVG remaster of this cd and I can't find AT's Delight printed anywhere on the cd, booklet or cover, front or back. I wonder if they made the mistake with the initial RVG Remaster and reprinted it shortly after that. My copy is a U.S. pressing, not European.
  25. The name of that album is "Another Story". Hopefully I'll get around to listening to that recording tomorrow. Meanwhile, it's onto disc 4. This disc features material from the albums "In Memory Of" and "Mr. Natural". Yep, that's the one. I love that album. Since I still had the box out in the living room, I played disc 2 (Jubilee Shout) last night. There are so many things to love about this collection, but last night I was focusing on Tommy Turrnetine's playing.
